Elderberry Syrup Recipe
Introduction: Elderberry syrup is a traditional remedy, often used during the cold and flu season due to its high levels of antioxidants and immune-boosting properties. With just a few ingredients, this easy-to-make syrup can be a natural way to promote health. It can be taken by the spoonful, added to teas, or drizzled on pancakes for a flavorful immune-boost.
Ingredients:
1 cup dried elderberries (or 2 cups fresh elderberries)
4 cups water
1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger (or 1 teaspoon dried)
1 cinnamon stick
1 cup raw honey (adjust to taste)
Preparation:
Simmer the Elderberries: In a medium saucepan, combine the dried elderberries, water, ginger, and cinnamon stick. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.
Reduce and Simmer: Once the mixture reaches a boil, reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 45 minutes. Stir occasionally and ensure the liquid reduces by half.
Strain: After simmering, remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly. Using a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth, strain the liquid into a clean bowl, pressing the berries to extract all the juice. Discard the elderberries and spices.
Add Honey: Once the liquid has cooled to a lukewarm temperature (around 110°F), add the honey and stir until well combined. Avoid adding honey when the syrup is too hot, as this can reduce its beneficial properties.
