The best approach is to look at the four different exam sections and examine them separately to figure out how you should prepare for each. In the reading section, you can best prepare by taking many practice tests, analyse the area(s) in which you are losing points, and take more reading tests in which you focus on the area(s) you are having difficulty with. By getting that skill under control during the practice, you can increase your overall reading score. However, you have to keep in mind that the test gets progressively harder depending on the band you are aiming for (the lower bands allow you to be less concerned about the end questions). Preparing for the listening section also requires taking practice tests, identifying your weakness, and getting it under control. It also demands that you get into the habit of predicting what type of vocabulary you expect to hear and ensure you know the terminology. The active skills need a slightly different approach for preparation; for instance, for the speaking section the best thing to do would be to simply increase your own confidence. You can do this by either imagining yourself in the speaking exam, or role-playing with a friend examiner vs. student). Once again, after identifying your weakest areas (presentation, mini-talk, interview, etc.), you can then focus on strengthening them. As for the writing section, the most important things to do are (1) look at different model answers and copy them out word for word, or memorize the structures and write them down; (2) practice formulating ideas on the spot for different questions; (3) get somebody to look at your writing and listen to their feedback in order to identify the errors you can focus on fixing; (4) after you finish writing, check for mistakes that you have made in previous essays. This last writing tip is vital, as by making the appropriate corrections you can significantly increase your grammatical range and accuracy. By following these tips, you will have a solid foundation for doing well on the exam.
