Feb 19, 2025
Welcome back to our study of the book of Hebrews. We are going to finish chapter 2 today as we zero in on verses 10 through 18. Last week, we talked about the importance of not neglecting the great salvation that Jesus has accomplished. Verses 5 through 9 showed us that because of Jesus’ work on the cross, and because He is sitting at the right hand of God, someday when His last enemy is put under His feet, we will reign with Him in His kingdom. We also talked about how God demonstrated his immeasurable grace to us by decreeing that Jesus tasted death on our behalf. In today’s presentation we will see why it was necessary for Jesus to die for the sins of those God had chosen out of this world.

hello good morning and welcome back to
0:02
our study of the book of hebrews
0:04
we are started on chapter two last
0:08
week actually for the last couple of
0:09
weeks we've been looking at chapter two
0:11
and uh specifically last week uh we
0:14
looked at verses five through nine
0:16
and we talked about the importance of
0:17
not neglecting the salvation that jesus
0:20
has
0:20
worked for us and we basically uh
0:24
in verses five to nine we talked about
0:26
how when jesus
0:27
on died on the cross he didn't just die
0:29
for the sins of the world that's not the
0:31
only thing that he did
0:32
that we talked about how the salvation
0:34
is too it's like as many layers
0:36
and one of the layers was the fact that
0:38
now because jesus is seated at the right
0:40
hand of god
0:42
someday we are going to reign with him
0:45
when
0:45
his last enemy is put under his feet
0:48
and we also talked about how god
0:51
showed his immeasurable grace um by
0:54
allowing jesus to
0:56
taste death on our behalf and we talked
0:59
about that last week so
1:00
we basically say that even though as
1:02
humans we are lower
1:04
in terms of uh power than the angels
1:07
god has given mankind a greater
1:10
responsibility
1:11
is uh he said in the in genesis we
1:13
looked at it
1:14
he told adam and eve subdued the world
1:16
and have dominion
1:18
and we lost that dominion because of the
1:21
sin of adam and eve when he sinned
1:23
against god
1:24
we lost that and now we see that we
1:27
actually are subjected to life
1:29
we suffer we die we get sick
1:32
there is despair there is pain there is
1:34
hopelessness
1:35
there is all sorts of stuff and it seems
1:38
as if god's promises are not going to
1:40
come true
1:41
but because of jesus and because of what
1:43
he accomplished on the cross
1:45
he restored that fellowship he restored
1:48
demanded but right now we don't we don't
1:51
see that yet but at some point
1:52
when jesus comes back we are going to
1:55
reign in his kingdom
1:56
with jesus and then the man demanded
2:00
to subdue everything would be made
2:02
manifest
2:03
because when jesus became flesh when the
2:05
world became flesh and
2:07
when when jesus took took upon a human
2:10
nature
2:11
we saw that he actually exercised that
2:14
dominion
2:14
he walked on water he uh commanded this
2:18
the fish of the sea to come into the
2:20
nets of
2:21
peter he also spoke and the wings
2:24
and everything else obeyed him so he had
2:27
that dominion someday
2:28
we are going to reign with jesus and
2:30
that means this is going to be restored
2:32
so today we are going to talk about uh
2:34
chapter 10 and verses 10 through 18
2:37
and in those verses we will see more
2:40
reasons why we should not neglect the
2:42
salvation and we're going to talk about
2:44
why it was necessary for jesus to die
2:47
for our sins
2:48
and why uh he became human this is
2:51
important
2:52
and today i feel like i'm a really shaky
2:54
ground because this is tough
2:55
stuff but i want to become i want to be
2:57
consistent and what i'm going to do is
2:59
i'm going to try to
3:00
read this and then find some other
3:02
scriptures to support
3:04
what i'm about to say to you so let's
3:06
read
3:07
verses 10 to 18 and then we're going to
3:10
go into
3:11
understanding what the scripture is
3:12
telling us now the scripture says here
3:15
for it was fitting that he for whom and
3:18
by whom
3:19
all things exist in bringing many sons
3:22
to glory
3:23
should make the founder of their
3:25
salvation
3:26
perfect through suffering for he who
3:29
sanctifies
3:30
and those who are sanctified all have
3:32
one source
3:34
that's why he's not ashamed to call them
3:36
brothers
3:37
saying i will tell of your name to my
3:40
brothers in the midst of the
3:41
congregation i will sing your praise
3:43
and again i will put my trust in him
3:47
and again behold and i the children god
3:50
has given me
3:51
since therefore the children sharing
3:54
flesh and blood
3:55
he himself likewise partook of the same
3:58
things that through death
4:00
he might destroy the one who has the
4:02
power of death
4:03
that is the devil and deliver all those
4:06
who through fear of death were subject
4:08
to life-long slavery
4:09
for surely it is not angels that he
4:12
helps but he helps the offspring
4:14
of abraham therefore he had to be made
4:17
like his brothers in every respect so
4:20
that he might become
4:21
a merciful and faithful high priest in
4:23
the service of god
4:24
to make propitiation for the sins of the
4:27
people for because he himself has
4:29
suffered when tempted
4:30
he is able to help those who are being
4:32
tempted these are
4:34
heavy heavy words and understanding all
4:38
this
4:38
is very very important for us so let's
4:41
look at verse 10.
4:42
the scripture says in verse 10 for it
4:45
was fitting
4:46
that he for whom and by whom all things
4:49
exist
4:50
in bringing in bringing many sons to
4:51
glory should make the founder
4:54
of their salvation perfect through
4:56
suffering so what does that mean
4:58
first we need to understand that because
5:01
of the grace of god
5:02
jesus had to taste death in order to
5:06
satisfy
5:07
the wrath of god and we saw that in
5:08
verse 9 we talked about that last week
5:11
because god wanted to show his grace
5:13
which is one of his
5:14
attributes jesus had to taste death in
5:17
order to satisfy the wrath of god
5:19
because
5:19
god is a righteous god and when we
5:21
offend god there has to be punishment
5:23
because the scripture says
5:25
the soul that sins shall die so the
5:28
wrath of god had to be satisfied by the
5:30
same time
5:31
god wanted to show his grace so because
5:33
of his grace
5:35
jesus had to taste death on our behalf
5:38
he had to experience death and now verse
5:40
10 explains that it had to be this way
5:43
okay there was no other way for god
5:47
to bring his chosen ones out of the
5:49
world to glory
5:50
except by the sacrifice of jesus on the
5:52
cross there was
5:54
no other way because we were adopted by
5:56
god
5:57
and then we sinned against him because
5:59
of adam and eve and now we have we
6:01
inherited that sinful nature god chose
6:04
us but to satisfy
6:06
his wrath jesus had to die there was no
6:08
other way
6:09
okay and i want to show you a couple of
6:10
things here before i continue
6:12
if you go to mark 14 verse 35 to 37
6:16
this is in gethsemane let's listen to
6:18
what jesus says
6:19
okay listen to what jesus says and going
6:22
a little farther
6:23
he fell on the ground and prayed that if
6:25
it was it were possible
6:27
the hour might pass from him
6:30
and he said abba father
6:33
all things are possible for you remove
6:36
this cup
6:36
from me yet not what i will but what you
6:40
will
6:40
and he came and found them sleeping and
6:42
he said to peter simon
6:44
are you asleep could you not watch one
6:46
hour basically jesus
6:48
is telling god the father is there any
6:51
way
6:52
other than this do i have to go through
6:54
this because he was troubled in the
6:55
spirit the scripture says
6:56
is there any other way and there was no
7:00
other way
7:01
there was this this was the only way and
7:03
if you also go to john chapter 12
7:05
verse 27 to 28 we read this
7:08
now is my soul troubled and what shall i
7:11
say father
7:11
save me from this hour but for this
7:15
purpose i've come to this hour
7:17
father glorify your name then a voice
7:20
came from heaven
7:21
i have glorified it and i will glorify
7:23
it again basically
7:25
jesus was troubled in his soul and he
7:27
says say
7:29
i can't tell god to save me from this
7:30
hour i have specifically come
7:32
for this purpose i came so that
7:36
they may have life i came to to to
7:38
absorb the wrath of god
7:39
this is why he came so there was no
7:41
other way so this is what the scripture
7:43
says it was fitting
7:45
that he for whom and by whom all things
7:47
exist
7:48
in bringing many songs to glory should
7:51
make the founder
7:52
of their salvation perfect through
7:54
suffering
7:55
so for jesus to become the complete and
7:58
adequate
7:59
sacrifice for us he had to take on a
8:01
human nature and then
8:02
suffer death on our behalf this is why
8:06
he is the way
8:07
the truth and the life and that no one
8:09
comes to the father
8:10
except through him so to be to become
8:12
the perfect
8:14
sacrifice accept acceptable to god
8:17
jesus had to die there was no other way
8:19
because
8:20
the sins of the world were poured upon
8:22
him and therefore he took the wrath of
8:24
god
8:24
he took the punishment for our sins so
8:27
the scripture said he was fitting
8:28
because he had to be that way there was
8:30
no other way
8:31
so as a result he became the pioneer
8:35
and the founder of the the word of god
8:37
okay so this is why the veil was torn
8:39
from top to bottom
8:41
when he said it is finished after the
8:43
crucifixion
8:44
jesus became the guarantor of a better
8:47
covenant because his sacrifice was
8:49
complete
8:49
it was adequate and he was pleasing to
8:52
the father
8:53
okay we're gonna read more about that in
8:56
in verses to come
8:57
now in verses 11 through 13 we read the
9:00
following
9:01
for he who sanctifies and those who are
9:04
sanctified
9:05
all have one source that is why he's not
9:07
ashamed
9:08
to call them brothers saying i will tell
9:11
of your name to my brothers
9:12
in the midst of the congregation i will
9:14
sing your prayers
9:15
and again i will put my trust in him and
9:18
again behold i
9:19
and the children god has given me now
9:22
the the writer of the book of hebrew is
9:24
quoting
9:24
isaiah 8 verse 17 to 18 and he's also
9:27
quoting
9:28
psalm 22 which is a messianic uh psalm
9:31
psalm 22 verse 22 okay so
9:34
he's again giving us some principles for
9:36
interpretation
9:37
he just talked about how he was feeling
9:39
for jesus
9:40
to uh it was feeling that god uh in
9:43
bringing many songs to glory
9:44
should make their part the pioneer of
9:46
their salvation perfect
9:47
through suffering meaning complete and
9:49
adequate the perfect there
9:51
means completely inadequate and
9:52
acceptable so
9:54
jesus is the only son of god he is one
9:57
in essence
9:58
with the father but we were made sons of
10:01
god by adoption
10:02
we saw that in ephesians okay god the
10:04
scripture said that he chose us in
10:06
christ
10:06
before the creation of the world so that
10:08
we might be holy and blameless
10:10
okay so because god wanted to adopt and
10:12
he wanted to save a remnant of mankind
10:15
because we belong to god by adoption we
10:18
had to be made holy
10:19
and consequently it required jesus to
10:22
suffer
10:23
death on our behalf because we
10:26
had to be made holy god chose us in him
10:29
so jesus is the one who sanctifies us he
10:32
is the one who makes us who set us apart
10:34
and that and for that sanctification to
10:35
be made
10:36
possible jesus had to taste death in his
10:39
humanity that was the only way
10:41
so we are his brothers and sisters by
10:43
adoption so he's not ashamed
10:45
to call me and to call you if you belong
10:47
to the family of god
10:49
brother and the writer shows his readers
10:52
again like i say another principle of
10:53
interpretation as he quotes
10:55
isaiah 8 and 17 to 18 and he
10:58
applies those verses to jesus
11:01
so because god wanted to save a remnant
11:03
out of mankind
11:04
jesus had to take on the human nature
11:07
and jesus is not ashamed to call us his
11:09
brothers because he knows that
11:10
these are the one that god has chosen
11:12
out of the world to be
11:14
made like him we read that in romans 8
11:16
that
11:17
um let me go to romans 8 because i think
11:19
this is important that i read
11:21
romans 8 to you guys i wanted to read
11:24
the last portions
11:25
of romans it just came to my mind
11:31
listen to what the scripture says
11:35
when we know verse 28 and we know that
11:38
for those who who love god all things
11:41
work together for
11:42
good for those who are called according
11:44
to his purpose
11:45
for those whom he foreknew he also
11:48
predestined
11:49
to be conformed to the image of his son
11:53
in order that he might be the firstborn
11:56
among many brothers and those who whom
12:00
he predestined he also called
12:02
and those whom we called he also
12:03
justified and those whom he justified he
12:05
also glorified
12:06
so this is again this is almost like a
12:09
parallel of what we
12:10
just read in hebrews 2 verse 11 to 13.
12:14
this is what jesus did he he
12:16
accomplished that on our behalf he
12:18
is not ashamed to call us his brothers
12:20
and sisters and as a result
12:23
he had to take on a human nature so that
12:26
he could be a merciful highest priest
12:28
in the service of god and we will see
12:30
that in verses to come
12:31
so again he sanctifies us because we
12:34
all have the same source we are called
12:36
children of god by adoption
12:38
and as a result jesus had to be the one
12:40
to take on
12:41
uh the sins of the world and the sins of
12:44
those that god has
12:45
chosen out of this world to become his
12:48
so it was
12:49
necessary he had to be this way and i'm
12:52
hoping that i'm conveying that to you
12:54
right now
12:54
now listen to verse 4 14 and 15 it gives
12:57
us more reasons
12:58
since therefore the children sharing
13:00
flesh and blood meaning
13:01
since therefore we are humans okay he
13:04
himself likewise
13:05
partook of the same things that through
13:07
death he might destroy
13:09
the one who has the power of death that
13:11
is the devil and deliver all those who
13:13
through their fear
13:14
their fear of death were subject to
13:16
life-long slavery
13:18
see a lot of us wonder why jesus jesus
13:21
had to become a human
13:22
why was it necessary which i've been
13:24
talking about since i began
13:26
so and verses 14 15 give us the answer
13:29
to the question
13:30
because those whom god chose out of this
13:32
world are humans we are humans
13:34
and god chose us okay and only a human
13:37
could enter seed for humans because if
13:39
you go to romans 5 let's read this
13:40
before i continue here i wanted to make
13:42
this point
13:43
listen to romans 5 verse 18 to 19
13:47
therefore as one trespass led
13:50
to condemnation for all men so one act
13:53
of righteousness
13:54
leads to justification and life for all
13:57
men for us by one man's disobedience
14:00
the many were made sinners so
14:03
by the one man's obedience the many will
14:07
be made
14:07
righteous okay because adam and eve
14:11
disobeyed
14:12
sins entered the world and we all
14:14
inherited that sinful
14:16
nature now because of jesus obedience
14:19
the reverse happens because he now
14:22
restores that fellowship that was broken
14:24
as a result of adam and eve
14:27
disobedience and this is what a
14:29
scripture is telling us here
14:31
okay because those whom god chose out of
14:34
this world are human
14:35
only a human could intercede for them
14:37
but unfortunately
14:38
there is no unrighteous there is none
14:41
righteous
14:41
because there's no one else that could
14:43
represent us no one
14:45
adam sinned and have sick so god himself
14:49
had to become flesh god himself because
14:52
the wrath of god is infinite it's the
14:55
name free wrath of god because once we
14:56
are separated from god it's like that
14:58
forever there is nothing you can do
15:00
to atone for your sins so you take an
15:02
infinite being
15:04
to again absorb the wrath of god so this
15:06
is why
15:07
jesus had to come because the wrath of
15:10
god is infinite
15:10
but by his one sacrifice it was
15:14
basically i wanted to this is what i
15:16
want to say jesus
15:17
sacrifice was a was of an infinite value
15:21
okay his death on the cross was of an
15:23
infinite value he had so much worth and
15:26
the worth of it is infinite so this is
15:28
why
15:29
god himself had to become flesh god the
15:33
son had to become flesh this is why
15:35
because it takes that kind of being to
15:38
absorb the wrath of god there's nobody
15:40
else that could do it because there's
15:41
none righteous
15:42
so how else are we going to be made
15:44
perfect before god
15:45
if if god himself doesn't do this for us
15:48
he's the one that has to accomplish this
15:50
purpose
15:50
so this is why the son of god how to
15:53
take on flesh
15:55
so jesus because of the measurable grace
15:57
of god and we read that in philippians 2
15:59
verse 5 to 11.
16:01
listen to the scripture i want to go to
16:03
philippians 2 verse 5 to 11.
16:06
this is important let's go to
16:09
philippians 2.
16:14
verse 5 through 11. i want to read that
16:16
to you
16:18
have this mind among yourselves which is
16:20
yours in christ jesus
16:22
who though he was in the form of god did
16:25
not count
16:26
equality with god a thing to be grasped
16:29
but emptied himself by taking the form
16:32
of a servant
16:33
being born in the in the likeness of man
16:36
and being found in human form
16:37
he humbled himself by becoming obedient
16:40
to the point of death
16:42
even death on the cross therefore god
16:45
has
16:45
highly exalted him and bestowed on him
16:47
the name that is above every name so
16:49
that at the name of jesus
16:51
every initial bow in heaven and on earth
16:54
and
16:54
under the earth and every tongue confess
16:56
that jesus christ is lord
16:57
to the glory of god the father okay
17:01
so it took that jesus had to come so why
17:04
did he have to do that
17:05
is because he wanted to render
17:08
ineffective
17:10
the author of sin that is the devil see
17:12
the devil is the author of sin the
17:14
scriptures say that he has been sinning
17:15
from the beginning
17:16
and as a result of him leading adam and
17:18
eve to disobey god
17:20
sin entered the world and now we are all
17:22
doomed because of what the devil has
17:24
done
17:26
by leading adam and eve to sin okay so
17:29
now
17:29
our fear of death it was it's not just
17:32
physical
17:32
it's physical and spiritual and it
17:35
causes us to live in fear look at people
17:37
we
17:37
are so fearful of everything we fear
17:40
death
17:41
we fear everything and we are slaves to
17:43
sin and we cannot get away from it so
17:46
this is how we live our life we live our
17:47
life in constant fear
17:49
there is like this this this this this
17:52
dread that we have
17:53
and that's because of the enemy and
17:54
because he is the author of death
17:57
so we have this natural fear of death
18:01
and it's instead of instead of the world
18:03
being subjected to us
18:04
now we are becoming we've become
18:06
subjected to creation and we
18:08
fear everything but jesus
18:12
when he took on flesh and when he became
18:13
a human he destroyed the works of the
18:15
devil
18:16
and he restored our broken fellowship
18:18
now again we have
18:20
um there is a desire to to
18:23
we look forward to the coming kingdom of
18:26
god again we no longer live in fear
18:28
and this is why when you become a
18:29
christian when you are regenerated
18:31
there is this joy that bubbles up from
18:33
your there is this
18:34
this this growing joy because you know
18:36
that this is not the end and you don't
18:38
fear death
18:39
because jesus himself said don't fear
18:42
the person that can kill you
18:43
and that's all you can do but fear him
18:45
who has the power to throw you into hell
18:47
okay so now we no longer fear death
18:50
physical death doesn't mean anything
18:51
anymore yes we still fear a little bit
18:53
but
18:53
it doesn't have a grip on us like oh
18:55
this is over no
18:57
because we know that even though we die
18:58
we shall live again because jesus was
19:00
raised
19:01
from the dead so therefore he he
19:03
rendered
19:04
satan's power he nullified it because
19:09
that's what satan has over people fear
19:11
of death
19:12
and fear of you know this thing this is
19:14
this is the fear that he causes people
19:15
to have
19:16
but because jesus rose from the dead he
19:18
destroyed that so no longer we no longer
19:20
live in fear because we know
19:22
that even though we die we shall live
19:24
again because jesus rose from the dead
19:26
and he's the pioneer of our salvation
19:28
and we will live eternally with him and
19:30
we will be clothed
19:31
with an imperishable body so therefore
19:33
we don't live in fear
19:35
anymore okay and i remember jeremy
19:39
jeremiah came song he says you can have
19:42
all this world
19:42
just give me jesus so these these are
19:45
the words that i want to resonate with
19:47
you and i want to finish this with by
19:48
reading
19:49
verses uh 16 through 18 and then we're
19:52
going to end this
19:54
so listen to the scripture for surely it
19:56
is not angels that he helps
19:58
but he helps the offspring of abraham
20:01
therefore he had to be made like his
20:03
brothers in every respect
20:05
so that he might become a merciful and
20:08
faithful high priest in the service of
20:10
god
20:11
to make propitiation for the sins of the
20:13
people for because he himself has
20:15
suffered when he
20:16
when tempted he is able to help those
20:18
who are being tempted you see
20:20
jesus didn't come here to help angels
20:23
which is to me is incredible like angels
20:26
don't understand
20:27
redemption i don't think they do
20:30
because the scripture says that they
20:32
long to to understand these things
20:34
i don't know if i quoted the scripture
20:35
correctly because
20:37
those angels that went with satan they
20:39
were never redeemed
20:41
but humans we sinned against god
20:45
and we know what it means to to to be
20:47
alienated from god but then when god
20:49
restores that fellowship
20:50
it's like this joy that comes and so
20:53
when jesus came
20:54
he didn't come to restore angels he came
20:56
to restore mankind because the scripture
20:58
says somewhere that we were made in the
21:00
image of god so he came to restore
21:02
us i mean this is incredible news so
21:05
therefore because of that reason
21:07
he had to be made like us so that he can
21:09
understand and feel what we feel
21:12
this is why he took on flesh see when
21:14
angels even appear
21:16
in us humans they are still spirit
21:18
because they can't fully understand how
21:20
we feel
21:21
and we they don't understand the human
21:23
experience they don't have that human
21:24
experience
21:25
jesus had that because he became a baby
21:28
he was a little baby that was born he
21:30
was a fetus he started
21:32
he he was just like us in every respect
21:34
except exception that he never sinned he
21:37
was a sinless
21:38
human but as far as temptations
21:41
as far as like suffering as far as
21:43
everything else that we feel
21:45
he felt that and angels don't feel that
21:48
because they are spirits so jesus took
21:50
on flesh that he can
21:51
understand the human experience and
21:53
because of that he's a merciful high
21:55
priest
21:56
okay he is merciful to us and he's
21:59
faithful to god because
22:00
he lived the righteous life that god
22:03
desired
22:04
so everything that he did was pleasing
22:06
to god because the scripture says again
22:09
my food is to do the will of him who
22:11
sent me
22:12
so jesus lived that perfect life but at
22:14
the same time
22:15
he's also faithful he's also merciful to
22:18
us because he understands that we are
22:19
feeble
22:20
humans that we fall so we can go to him
22:24
the scripture says
22:25
if we confess our sins he's faithful and
22:27
just to forgive us
22:28
because he understands and the scripture
22:30
says in verse 18 for because
22:33
he himself are suffered when tempted
22:35
he's able to help those who are being
22:36
tempted
22:37
so jesus knows what it means to be
22:39
tempted but without sin
22:41
so therefore as a result he can help us
22:43
when we are being tempted
22:45
angels can do that for us because they
22:47
don't understand the human experience
22:49
they are spirits you see that
22:52
so the scripture says he helps the
22:54
offspring of
22:55
abraham meaning those who believe like
22:58
abraham the scripture says in genesis
23:00
that
23:00
abraham believed god and god counted him
23:03
righteous so those who believe like
23:05
abraham
23:06
those are the one jesus helps because
23:08
god has called him
23:09
out of this world into his marvelous
23:11
light and as a result
23:13
jesus understands what we go through he
23:15
understands every bit of our suffering
23:17
he's not like he's like oblivious to it
23:19
because he became a human
23:20
so he was tempted in every way yet
23:23
without sin
23:24
so therefore you and i can go to him i
23:26
am struggling
23:27
like lately i've been struggling i told
23:30
you i've been like flat
23:32
so i know that he knows what i mean so i
23:34
can go to him i said lord
23:36
why am i feeling this way i'm so empty
23:40
you see that so jesus understands that
23:45
because he was like us he took on flesh
23:49
and as a result he's a merciful high
23:50
priest in the service of god because
23:52
he's also
23:53
faithful to god this is what makes him
23:55
great
23:56
not only does he understand the human
23:58
experience he's also faithful meaning
24:00
he is the the appropriate and the
24:02
perfect
24:03
mediator between man and god
24:06
faithful to god merciful to man he puts
24:09
the two together
24:10
as a breach so this is the only way this
24:13
is the way the truth and the life
24:15
no one else can do that angels can't
24:18
because they don't understand the human
24:20
experience they never became humans
24:22
and they can't even absorb the wrath of
24:24
god he took god himself
24:27
take it took on flesh i mean this is
24:29
incredible news
24:31
for us so that we have to not neglect
24:33
the salvation
24:34
and this is what the scripture is
24:36
telling us and i hope that this helps
24:38
you guys out
24:39
and i look forward again to speaking
24:40
with you again next time okay have a
24:42
wonderful day
24:43
and i'll see you next time
