0:00
hello good morning and this is tahiba
0:03
and uh welcome back to our study of the
0:06
book of hebrews we're gonna start
0:08
chapter three today and then we're just
0:11
gonna zero in on verses one through six
0:15
now chapter three subheading is uh jesus
0:18
is greater than moses
0:20
now for people like me and you
0:23
we don't really have like a knowledge of
0:25
the old testament like they're a good
0:28
jewish person those words may not mean
0:31
too much now we know moses and we know
0:35
how moses are led the people of israel
0:38
through the wilderness we kind of know
0:40
about the stories but we don't
0:41
understand the weight that are carriers
0:44
like moses is uh probably the most
0:47
respected if not one of the most
0:50
figures in the old testament because the
0:53
law was delivered to moses by the angels
0:59
for the book of hebrews chapter 3 for
1:02
the author to say that jesus is greater
1:04
than moses is a heavy heavy thing
1:07
now with that said um i want to kind of
1:10
give you a quick synopsis of
1:13
last week and then we're going to get
1:15
into looking at verses one through six
1:19
now we ended uh chapter two and looked
1:21
at the reasons why uh the author is
1:24
telling us not to neglect the salvation
1:27
the salvation jesus has
1:30
for mankind and we specifically looked
1:32
at the importance of jesus
1:34
taking on the human nature in order to
1:37
be the perfect and adequate
1:39
representative for humanity in that he
1:41
came to not only atone for our sins but
1:47
live the perfect life that god desires
1:50
he was not only faithful
1:52
as a high priest to god but he also was
1:55
merciful to god merciful to mankind i'm
1:58
sorry merciful to mankind because he
2:01
understands the human experience because
2:05
he became one in the in chapter 2
2:07
chapter 2 ends with uh for he himself
2:11
when suffered he is able to help those
2:14
who are being tempted now jesus was
2:16
tempted but he was sinless he did not
2:19
sin he did not give in to temptation so
2:21
because he took on the human nature he
2:23
understands the human experience and he
2:27
is the perfect sacrifice for mankind
2:29
because he atoned for our sins and he
2:32
also lived the perfect life that god
2:34
desires so now chapter three is going to
2:37
start with a series of verses and i just
2:40
want to zero in on verses one through
2:42
six uh this morning so let's go and i'm
2:46
and then once i read it uh we are going
2:48
to uh analyze them one verse at a time
2:51
now listen to the scripture you can look
2:53
on the screen he says therefore holy
2:58
you who share in a heavenly calling
3:01
consider jesus the apostle and high
3:04
priest of our confession who was
3:07
faithful to him who appointed him
3:10
just as moses was also faithful in all
3:16
has been counted worthy of more glory
3:19
than moses as much more glory as the
3:22
builder of a house has more honor than
3:27
for every house is built but by someone
3:31
but the builder of all things is god
3:34
now moses was faithful in all god's
3:38
house as a servant to testify to the
3:40
things that were to be spoken later
3:43
but christ is faithful over god's house
3:47
as a son and we are his house if indeed
3:50
we hold fast our confidence and our
3:56
now this is the word of god
4:00
to pay attention to it now
4:03
we are going to look at these verses one
4:05
at a time so in verse 1 we are told
4:08
therefore holy brothers you will share
4:11
in a heavenly calling consider jesus
4:14
the apostle and high priest of our
4:18
what is he telling us here again
4:21
the writer is saying to us in light of
4:23
everything that i've been saying to you
4:26
and we looked at some of these things
4:28
like uh jesus is greater than the
4:30
prophets and angels jesus atoned for the
4:34
sins and because of his work god has
4:37
glorified his you his humanity by
4:39
bestowing on the humanity the name that
4:41
is above every name that's the name son
4:44
and he's now seated at the right hand of
4:48
and waiting till all his enemies are put
4:50
under his feet and he isn't ashamed to
4:53
call humans his brothers and he became
4:55
one so that he could be a faithful and
4:58
merciful high priest in the service of
5:00
god and he's not oblivious to on the
5:03
suffering of man because he was made
5:05
like humans in every respect and can
5:07
identify with the infirmities of humans
5:11
without sin he is sinless but he can
5:13
identify with our sufferings okay and
5:16
his sacrifice on the cross was pleasing
5:18
to god and the resurrection
5:20
authenticated that so because of all
5:23
these reasons and more particularly
5:25
because jesus understands the human
5:28
the writer is telling
5:31
he's about to declare some very
5:32
important truths to us and to his
5:34
readers okay and we need to know what
5:37
they are and we need to know who those
5:39
people are he calls them he says holy
5:43
okay he refers to the ones that he is
5:45
writing to us holy brothers and
5:48
why is he using that appellation
5:52
those are the followers of christ who
5:54
have been set apart by god holy brothers
5:58
they've been set apart by god he's
6:00
saying in light of everything that i've
6:03
my brothers who are holy who have been
6:07
they are the ones that we share in the
6:08
heavenly calling okay he's saying you
6:11
will share in that heavenly calling we
6:13
share in that heavenly calling those
6:15
people that um the writer was writing to
6:17
they share in the heavenly calling and
6:19
ultimately us we also share in our
6:21
heavenly calling so he's telling them
6:23
listen to consider attentively and to
6:27
fix their eyes on jesus and to fix our
6:30
eyes on jesus and he defines jesus as
6:34
god's chief messenger and his priest of
6:37
what they and we confess okay
6:41
and then that um i want to kind of
6:43
explain that a little bit the apostle
6:45
and higher peace of our confession and
6:48
and the confession is that which we
6:50
believe and that which we've put us
6:52
trusting we've put our trust in jesus
6:54
works on the cross we put us our trust
6:56
in that and that's what we we talk about
6:58
we preach the gospel the good news that
7:00
he came to atone for the sins of the
7:02
world so we've put our hope on christ
7:04
and christ alone so so the writer is
7:07
saying therefore you whom god are set
7:11
because god himself is the one that
7:13
initiated the call and you share in this
7:15
heavenly calling the call of god now
7:17
he's telling us and he's telling these
7:19
readers at the time to fix their eyes on
7:25
and high priest of our confession the
7:28
messenger of god and if you look
7:30
at john 3 verse 17 to 34 john 5
7:34
verse 36 to 38 verse 36 and 30th john 6
7:38
29 and 57 it shows that jesus was sent
7:42
by god and i want to look at some of
7:44
these verses before we go any further
7:46
we're going to look at john 3 17. listen
7:51
the scripture says for god did not send
7:54
his son into the world to condemn the
7:57
world but in order that the world might
8:00
be saved through him the world those
8:03
people of the world that god himself has
8:06
in verse 34 we read for he whom god has
8:11
the words of god for he gives the spirit
8:15
measure and then we're going to look at
8:23
36 and 38. listen to the scripture
8:32
but the testimony that i have is greater
8:35
than than that of john for the works
8:38
that the father has given me to
8:39
accomplish the very works that i'm doing
8:42
bear witness about me that the father
8:48
and verse 38 and you do not have his
8:51
word abiding in you he's addressing the
8:53
pharisees for you do not believe the one
8:55
whom he has sent and then we're also
8:57
going to look at john 6 uh 29
9:00
listen to what the scripture says here
9:06
jesus answered them this is the work of
9:08
god that you believe in him whom he has
9:13
and then we're going to finish that john
9:18
as the living father has sent me and i
9:20
live because of the father so whoever
9:23
feeds on me he also will leave because
9:26
of me now you can see that jesus again
9:29
was sent by god is the apostle and high
9:32
priest of that which we confess and the
9:35
verses i just read to you give more
9:38
weight to the declaration that we read
9:41
in verse one and that leads me to the
9:45
now he's saying consider jesus
9:47
and then he goes on to say who was
9:49
faithful to him who appointed him just
9:52
as moses also was faithful in all god's
9:55
house okay this is not the writer had
9:58
just told his readers to consider
10:00
very carefully jesus he said fix your
10:02
eyes on jesus really pay attention to
10:05
and then he begins with a light
10:08
comparison between moses and jesus and
10:10
we already talked about how moses is
10:12
revered in the jewish religion moses was
10:15
really seen as probably one of the top
10:18
figures in the old testament because he
10:22
so now he's going to give us more reason
10:24
why um we should fix our eyes on jesus
10:27
and ultimately us because he's primarily
10:30
addressing the readers and and we are
10:32
the readers now so this is what keeps
10:34
saying us now jesus was as faithful as
10:37
moses was in all god's house now god's
10:41
is pretty much the people of god the
10:44
house of god is the people of god so
10:46
the author is basically comparing jesus
10:48
ministry to moses ministry and because
10:51
the jews again held moses in the highest
10:54
well it's going to show later that jesus
10:56
is greater than moses he made mention of
11:00
it in general in chapter one when he say
11:01
that back then on the prophet god used
11:05
the prophet as his mouthpiece but now he
11:07
has spoken spoken to us
11:10
through his son so he he made a general
11:13
statement now he's been specific and he
11:15
uses moses because moses like i said is
11:18
seen as the top one of the top three old
11:20
testament figures so he's going to
11:22
compare jesus to moses to to make a
11:26
so well how faithful was moses to to
11:29
understand that let's read numbers 12
11:31
because he pretty much summarizes how
11:35
god himself honored moses we're going to
11:37
read numbers 12 verse 1 to 9. now this
11:40
is what happened miriam and aaron they
11:43
oppose moses now miriam is moses sister
11:45
and aaron is his brother now listen to
11:47
what they did now miriam and aaron spoke
11:50
against moses because of the cruciate
11:52
woman whom he had married so moses had
11:57
and they kind of criticized him for it
12:01
miriam miriam and aaron spoke against
12:03
moses because of the cruciate woman whom
12:06
he had married for he had married a
12:10
repeated twice and they said has the
12:13
lord indeed spoke only through moses has
12:16
he not spoken to us also
12:18
and the lord heard it
12:20
god was not pleased now the man moses
12:23
was very meek you see the word moses was
12:27
more than all people who were on the
12:30
face of the earth now did you hear that
12:32
moses exuded meekness more than everyone
12:36
that was on the face of the earth and
12:38
suddenly the lord said to moses and to
12:40
aaron and miriam come out you three to
12:43
the 10 of meeting and the three of them
12:45
came out and the lord came down in a
12:48
pillar of cloud and stood at the
12:50
entrance of the tent and called aaron
12:52
and miriam and they both came forward
12:56
and he said hear my words
12:59
if there is a prophet among you i the
13:01
lord make myself known to him in a
13:03
vision i speak with him in a dream not
13:06
so with my servant moses he
13:10
faithful in all my house
13:16
mouth to mouth clearly and not in
13:19
riddles and he beholds the form of the
13:23
why then were you not afraid to speak
13:26
against my servant moses and the anger
13:29
of the lord was kindled against them and
13:32
he departed that we read later god
13:35
disciplines aaron and miriam
13:40
the passage shows us the kind of honor
13:43
moses received from god you see god says
13:46
when i speak to prophets i use riddles
13:48
and dreams and stuff like that but not
13:50
with moses with moses i speak
13:55
okay so moses received that kind of
13:56
relationship with god because the
13:58
scripture says he was meek more than all
14:01
the men on the face of the earth
14:03
so and he beheld the form of god this is
14:06
how much moses was honored by god
14:10
but the thing is this jesus
14:12
doesn't just behold the form of god
14:19
now you see the weight that is carries
14:21
if we neglect such a great salvation
14:27
a prophet he's not just another figure
14:29
that is important in the old testament
14:32
jesus is god in the flesh
14:39
and the writer is going to expand on
14:41
that in verse on three we're going to
14:43
read listen to what he says in verse 3
14:46
for jesus he gives the reason why
14:49
because jesus has been counted
14:51
worthy of more glory than moses this is
14:55
why we should consider jesus as much
14:58
more glory as the builder of a house has
15:00
more honor than the house itself
15:03
why should you consider jesus why should
15:07
because he has been counted
15:11
worthy of more glory than moses in the
15:14
sense that the builder of a house has
15:17
more honor than the house itself see
15:20
moses was part of the house of god he
15:22
was a man of god but not sinless moses
15:26
was not sinless okay
15:29
he was commissioned by god and faithful
15:31
in his ministry but he didn't die for
15:33
the sins of the world and he couldn't
15:36
atone for the sins of the world he just
15:37
couldn't do that he couldn't fulfill
15:39
that and as a matter of fact moses
15:41
himself was commissioned by jesus as we
15:43
see in exodus 3 the burning bush the
15:46
scripture says the angel of the lord
15:48
appeared to moses now whenever we read
15:51
in the old testament the angel of the
15:53
lord this is uh a theophany or a
15:56
christophany where jesus appears the
15:59
pre-incarnate jesus appears so he
16:01
commissions means moses himself so moses
16:04
was part of the house but jesus is the
16:08
builder of the house as we will see in
16:12
and we we established that jesus christ
16:15
is the radiance of the glory of god
16:17
that's in chapter one in other words
16:20
god himself hence greater than moses
16:24
jesus is the radiance of the glory of
16:26
god okay so he is far
16:31
than moses this is why we should
16:33
consider him he's given us reasons after
16:36
reasons after reasons and that leads me
16:38
to verse four listen to what he says for
16:41
every house is built by someone but the
16:45
builder of all things is god
16:48
now moses was faithful
16:50
in all god's house as a servant to
16:53
testify to the things that were to be
16:55
spoken later now we established that
16:57
jesus christ is the radiance of the
16:59
glory of god in other words
17:02
god himself hence greater than moses so
17:05
if moses was faithful as a servant and
17:08
he came to be a messenger
17:10
of the things that were to come his job
17:13
was to point to the coming messiah okay
17:15
that's what jesus moses job was is to
17:18
point to the coming messiah
17:21
so and and and jesus is not just uh a
17:26
man like we saw he said that he is not
17:29
he's truly god and truly man
17:34
is the builder of all things we see that
17:36
in colossians chapter 1 verse 15 to 17
17:39
for all things were made through him and
17:41
without him was not anything made that
17:44
was made that was john 1 but in
17:46
colossians we also read that he is
17:48
before all things because all things
17:50
were made by him and for him
17:53
okay so he is the builder of all things
17:56
now moses is faithful as a man in the
17:59
house is part of the house of god and
18:01
among god's people he is faithful but
18:03
jesus is god who built that house he
18:08
built that house that's the difference
18:10
so jesus has more glory
18:13
than moses because moses is a servant
18:19
and we're going to read that in in verse
18:21
six listen but christ is faithful over
18:24
god's house us a son and we are his
18:28
house if indeed we hold fast our
18:31
confidence and our boasting in our hope
18:34
see jesus is faithful as a son not a
18:36
servant he is the firstborn of all
18:40
one with god in essence and he has
18:45
glory than the angels and moses himself
18:49
and the author finishes his verse by
18:51
saying that those who hold fast and hang
18:53
on to the teachings he is handing to
18:56
are considered part of the house of god
18:58
as long as they hold on to the hope he's
19:02
now he's not suggesting that we are the
19:05
ones in charge of our salvation that's
19:07
not what he's saying but he's saying
19:09
that holding on to these truths that
19:13
is an evidence that we were truly called
19:17
by god and we're given new birth those
19:20
who remain faithful are these are the
19:22
ones that truly belong to the house
19:25
those are the ones that god has called
19:27
so he's saying he's not saying that you
19:28
are in charge of your salvation he's
19:30
saying by you holding on to those truths
19:33
you are proving that god has truly
19:37
and john ii john we read the same thing
19:40
if you go to second john chapter 1
19:44
9 and 10 listen to what he says here
19:47
everyone who goes on ahead and does not
19:49
abide in the teaching of christ does not
19:51
have god whoever abides in the teaching
19:56
has both the father and the son so john
20:00
is pretty much saying the same thing the
20:01
book of hebrews saying in chapter 3
20:05
6 and the scripture says
20:08
but christ is faithful is faithful over
20:11
god's house as a son and we are his
20:13
house if indeed we hold fast our
20:16
confidence and our boasting in our hope
20:20
so if you hold on to these truths if you
20:22
hold on to what we've heard if you hold
20:24
on to the end we prove by that that we
20:27
were called by god indeed so again jesus
20:31
greater than moses this is why we should
20:34
keep our eyes on him we should consider
20:36
him because he has done far greater
20:38
things than moses because moses came
20:41
to serve jesus to point to the coming
20:44
messiah so jesus has greater glory and
20:48
we've seen what we achieved for mankind
20:51
his death on across his life that he
20:53
lived and now seated at the right hand
20:55
of god until all his enemies are put
20:58
under his feet and then we shall reign
21:00
with him and he understands
21:02
the human experience to me this is the
21:07
because oftentimes i don't think i
21:15
him truly understanding the human
21:23
because he had he can identify with our
21:25
suffering he can identify with the
21:28
things that we go through because he
21:32
he hungered he was tired
21:35
he was exhausted he was betrayed
21:40
he understands the human experience so
21:43
we should consider him he truly
21:44
understanding and he's able to help
21:49
didn't die for our sins
21:51
they can identify but they're also just
21:52
as sinful as we are jesus will sin less
21:55
so he can give us victory over
22:00
and i want to internalize these things
22:03
that helps me to go to him because when
22:06
you face the greatest trials what does
22:13
cast all your burdens upon him for he
22:19
because he understands truly what you
22:21
are going through he understands because
22:23
he was also a man like us
22:26
in every respect the scripture says
22:29
so we should go to him
22:32
and not being afraid
22:34
in the sense that we should have
22:35
reverence for god but not fear in the
22:38
sense of being dreadful or if you're
22:40
