Feb 19, 2025
Welcome back to our study of the book of Hebrews. We started chapter 2 last week and talked about one of the reasons why we shouldn’t neglect the salvation God has accomplished through Jesus. Because He is the Son of God and therefore has authority and preeminence over all creation, it is imperative that we heed His word lest we come under God’s discipline. Verses 5 through 9 give additional reasons why the people of God must not neglect this great salvation.

hello good morning and uh welcome back
0:02
to our study of the book of hebrews
0:04
and we are started on chapter two last
0:08
week and we're going to continue with
0:09
verses five through nine today
0:11
last week we looked at verses one
0:13
through four and then i'll give you a
0:15
synopsis
0:16
of what we talked about and then we're
0:17
gonna go and and talk about verses five
0:20
through nine but before i do that i just
0:22
wanna make a quick um
0:24
announcement i may just take a break
0:26
from hebrews
0:27
i or actually doing this uh study uh
0:30
after today
0:31
because i feel a little bit overwhelmed
0:33
with all kind of stuff and
0:35
i don't know for some reason there is a
0:37
sense in which
0:38
i have like this is i'm almost like a
0:40
flat you know like
0:42
almost like on an empty i don't i just
0:44
don't have
0:45
any desire to do a lot of things so i
0:47
may just take a break to to kind of just
0:49
uh
0:50
spend some time with the lord just the
0:52
lord and and know
0:54
you know and then just do that and then
0:56
maybe i'll get back to doing more
0:57
hebrews because i i do believe that i'm
0:59
kind of just flat
1:01
right now and i don't just want to do
1:02
stuff because i feel like this is my
1:05
duty
1:05
i just want to be able to serve because
1:08
um
1:08
god is the one that's working in me
1:10
because the scripture says somewhere
1:12
that we need the rest of god the rest of
1:14
god consists of
1:15
us being the vessels of his youth in the
1:18
sense that
1:19
when when we are doing something it is
1:20
god works in us to both to will and act
1:23
according to his purpose
1:24
god god creates what he commands
1:27
what the enemy just expects and what he
1:30
demands that's the difference so when
1:31
god wants you to do something
1:33
oftentimes i believe he gives you the
1:34
desire and he empowers you to do so
1:37
at this point i feel a little bit flat
1:39
so after today i think
1:41
i'm going to take uh i sit back the
1:43
backseat and just kind of sit out for a
1:45
little bit okay
1:46
so let me give you a quick uh synopsis
1:48
of uh chapter two
1:49
versus one through four and then we're
1:51
gonna go into verses five through nine
1:53
so last week we talked about the reasons
1:56
why
1:56
we should not neglect and the great
1:59
salvation which
2:00
we've received through jesus christ work
2:03
on the cross
2:04
and we talk about because he's the son
2:07
of god and because he has authority
2:09
and preeminence over all creation it is
2:12
imperative that we heed
2:13
his word lest we come under god's
2:16
discipline
2:17
and then in chapter and verses one
2:19
through four we saw that even though the
2:21
angels have a
2:23
lower um in terms of um
2:26
comparing them to jesus jesus is greater
2:28
than the angels we saw in chapter one
2:30
jesus is greater than the prophets so if
2:33
the words of the angels
2:35
which they brought to mount sinai were
2:37
binding and every transgression
2:39
and disobedience received a just
2:41
retribution how much more will god
2:43
treat us if we look at what his son has
2:46
done
2:47
with contempt i mean this is a greater
2:49
discipline so we
2:50
we say that it is important it is
2:52
imperative that we
2:53
pay attention to what we've heard or we
2:55
will drift away from it and that's not
2:57
a good place to be because as god's
2:59
children he is going to discipline us
3:01
so that's what we talked about in
3:03
chapter one and then today we're going
3:04
to continue with verses five to now
3:07
through nine and the the writer is gonna
3:09
give us more reasons why
3:11
we should not neglect this great
3:14
salvation
3:15
which jesus did and worked
3:18
for us okay so let's go and i'm gonna
3:20
read verses five
3:22
through nine so
3:25
the scripture says for it was not to
3:28
angels
3:29
that god subjected the world to come
3:32
of which we are speaking it has been
3:35
testified somewhere
3:37
what is meant that you are mindful of
3:39
him or the son of man
3:41
that you care for him you made him for a
3:45
little while
3:46
lower than the angels you have crowned
3:48
him with glory and honor
3:50
putting everything in subjecting in
3:53
subjection
3:54
under his feet now in putting everything
3:57
in subjection to him
3:59
he left nothing outside his control
4:02
at present we do not see yet everything
4:05
in subjection to man
4:07
but we see him who for a little while
4:10
was made lower than the angels namely
4:12
jesus
4:13
crown with glory and honor because of
4:16
the suffering
4:17
of death so that by the grace of god he
4:20
might
4:20
taste death for everyone
4:24
so what does all that mean that's what
4:26
we're going to be talking about today so
4:27
we're gonna take it one verse at a time
4:30
and we're gonna unpack what all this
4:32
means so in verse five we are told
4:35
for it was not to angels that god
4:38
subjected the world to come of which we
4:41
are speaking
4:42
and he has been testified somewhere and
4:44
then we're going to stop and then
4:45
unpack this so there's going to be a
4:47
world that's going to come
4:48
god is going to create a new heaven and
4:50
a new earth that's going to happen
4:52
it's now if it's going to happen is when
4:54
it happens
4:55
that's when jesus comes back on earth
4:58
okay
4:59
so basically the writer is saying listen
5:01
the salvation which
5:03
god has worked through jesus is not just
5:06
one fault there are many
5:07
layers to it so don't neglect this great
5:10
salvation because there are many more
5:12
things about the salvation
5:13
that you guys don't know about yet and
5:16
that's what the author is going to tell
5:17
us today
5:18
and this is the reason he's saying the
5:21
world that is to come
5:22
will not be subjected to angels as great
5:26
as they are
5:26
like angels are great but verses 6 and 7
5:30
tell us who will be in charge and we're
5:32
going to see that in a minute
5:33
so we cannot have a limited
5:36
view of the work of christ on the cross
5:38
okay he attorned for the sins of the
5:40
world
5:41
and restored mankind fellowship with god
5:43
but that's not the only thing that jesus
5:45
did
5:45
the salvation of god extends further
5:49
than that and that's what the author is
5:51
trying to tell his readers
5:52
and he's saying we're going to look at
5:54
verses 6 through 8. he's going to give
5:56
them the reasons why
5:57
listen to what verses 6 and 8 say
6:00
through it
6:01
it has been testified somewhere what is
6:03
mean
6:04
that you are mindful of him or the son
6:06
of man that you care for him
6:09
you made him for a little while lower
6:10
than the angels you have crowned him
6:13
with glory and honor
6:14
putting everything in subjection under
6:17
his feet now in putting everything in
6:20
subjection to him
6:21
he left nothing outside his control
6:24
at present we do not yet see everything
6:27
in subjection to him and then we're
6:28
gonna stop here and then don't practice
6:31
so basically what are we told here so
6:33
verses
6:34
verses 6 through 8 tell us that the
6:36
world to come
6:38
will be subjected to mankind man or
6:41
mankind
6:42
like us humans okay and this is a direct
6:45
quotation from
6:46
psalm 8 verse 4 through 6 which we're
6:48
going to read in a second
6:50
actually i just read it to you so let me
6:52
just read the entire psalm psalm 8
6:54
verses 1
6:55
through 9. let's listen to what david
6:56
says oh lord
6:58
our lord how majestic is your name in
7:01
all the earth
7:03
you have set your glory above the
7:04
heavens out of the mouth of babies and
7:07
infants you have established
7:08
strength because of your force to steal
7:11
the enemy and the avenger when i look at
7:14
your heavens
7:15
the work of your fingers the moon and
7:17
the stars which you have set in place
7:20
what is men that you are mindful of him
7:24
and the son of man that you care for him
7:27
yet you have made him a little lower
7:29
than the heavenly beings
7:31
and crowned him with glory and honor
7:34
you have given him dominion over the
7:36
works of your hands
7:38
you have put all things under his feet
7:42
all sheep and oxen and also the beast
7:45
of the field the birds of the heavens
7:47
and the fish of the sea
7:49
whatever passes along the paths of the
7:52
sea
7:52
oh lord our lord how majestic is your
7:55
name
7:56
in all the earth so basically
7:59
uh the writer of hebrews is quoting
8:01
david
8:02
okay and david when he was writing this
8:05
psalm
8:06
he saw from afar what god was going to
8:08
accomplish through jesus
8:09
he also saw that god has bestowed upon
8:12
mankind
8:13
such a great um i would say what
8:17
uh he made them he made mankind steward
8:20
of all his creation and we're going to
8:23
read that in genesis 1
8:24
verse 26 to 31 before actually on
8:27
practice a little more listen to what
8:29
the scripture says in genesis 1 verse 26
8:32
to 31 and this is what david saw
8:34
then god said let us make man in our
8:38
image
8:38
after our likeness and let them have
8:41
dominion
8:42
over the fish of the sea and over the
8:45
birds of the heavens and over the
8:47
livestock and over
8:48
all the earth and over every creeping
8:52
thing that creeps on the earth so god
8:54
created man in his own image
8:56
in the image of god he created him male
8:59
and female he created them
9:01
and god blessed them and god said to
9:04
them be fruitful
9:06
and multiply and fill the earth and
9:07
subdue it
9:09
subdue it and have dominion over the
9:11
fish of the sea
9:13
and over the birds of the heavens and
9:15
over every
9:16
living thing that moves on the earth
9:20
and behold god said and god said behold
9:23
i have given you
9:24
every plant yielding seed that is on the
9:26
face of all the earth
9:27
and every tree with seed and its fruit
9:31
you shall have them for food and to
9:33
every beast of the earth and to every
9:35
bird of the heavens
9:36
and to everything that creeps on the
9:38
earth everything that has the breath of
9:40
life i have given
9:41
every green plant food for food
9:45
and he was so and god saw everything
9:47
that he had made and behold
9:49
he was very good and there was evening
9:53
and there was morning the sixth day so
9:55
david saw that
9:57
david saw when he was writing the song
9:59
he understood that man in creation
10:02
was lower or inferior to the angels okay
10:05
and we can see that in terms of our
10:07
abilities and just have supernatural
10:09
abilities and we don't have those
10:10
okay they are powerful beings they are
10:13
very powerful and we
10:14
we can't compare the angels in terms of
10:17
that kind
10:18
of power okay they they are supernatural
10:20
beings they have
10:21
they do things that we can't do okay and
10:23
they cannot die
10:25
but here's the thing that david saw even
10:28
with all that god has given
10:30
man or mankind or mankind a greater
10:32
privilege
10:33
than the angel okay we have been made
10:36
steward
10:37
of all that god has created
10:40
as we saw in genesis 1 verse 26 to 31
10:44
see angels may have all this power and
10:47
they are created to serve actually
10:49
those who will inherit salvation us but
10:51
we have been given
10:52
a greater privilege a greater privilege
10:55
we have
10:56
god says subdue everything i've given
10:58
you everything
11:00
okay but here's what happened when sin
11:03
entered the world everything was was
11:05
disrupted
11:06
but god is going to restore all things
11:09
including his mandate to mankind which
11:11
is having dominion over all he has
11:13
created
11:14
god is going to do that so we were
11:16
created in his image
11:17
this is important we were created in the
11:20
image of god
11:21
in order that we might reflect him to
11:24
his creation
11:25
so he has created us in his image so
11:27
that we can reflect
11:29
him to the created um
11:32
order okay so whose images are new is
11:34
the question
11:36
is god's image on you is god's image on
11:38
you are you
11:39
reflecting the glory of god are you
11:40
reflecting the character of god are you
11:43
a reflection of his image and that's why
11:45
god has given us this mandate
11:47
so creation shall see the image of god
11:49
through you
11:50
and through me okay this is why we've
11:53
been given dominion over his works
11:55
but there is a problem and and the
11:58
writer of hebrew sees that
12:00
right now it seems as if man is actually
12:02
subject to all kinds of sufferings okay
12:04
we die
12:06
okay we get sick we suffer
12:09
there is pain there is suffering we fail
12:12
there is
12:12
fear there is despair there is
12:15
hopelessness
12:16
there is all kind of stuff even with
12:17
advanced in in in the medical field
12:20
even with all these things that have
12:22
happened we still suffer we still die
12:24
we still have pain we still lose loved
12:27
ones
12:27
and it seems as if we have no dominion
12:30
over
12:30
all god's creation people get killed by
12:34
animals
12:34
people get dominated by things it just
12:37
seems as if god's promise has failed
12:39
okay and that that's what makes makes us
12:41
think well
12:43
god said that we should have dominion
12:44
but it doesn't seem as if we have
12:45
dominion right now
12:47
because everything seems as if it is the
12:49
other way around
12:50
like we are being dominated by
12:53
everything around us life is dominating
12:55
us
12:56
pain is dominating fear is dominating
12:59
death is dominating sickness
13:01
hopelessness
13:03
and this is what it seems as if this is
13:05
what's going on now it seems to say we
13:06
don't have that dominion
13:08
but verse 9 solves that problem
13:11
and this is important to see that listen
13:13
to how he starts
13:14
verse 9 but we see
13:17
him who's that him jesus
13:20
we see him who for a little while was
13:23
made
13:24
lower than the angels namely jesus
13:26
crowned with glory and honor because of
13:29
the suffering of death so that by the
13:31
grace of god he might taste
13:33
death for everyone now
13:36
we lost uh the dominion
13:39
we lost demanded that god has given us
13:41
because of adam and eve
13:43
okay so jesus by taking on a human
13:46
nature
13:47
came to restore that which we lost
13:50
because of adam and eve and their
13:52
failure to obey
13:54
the word of god they didn't obey god
13:57
and we read in romans 8 verse 20 to 21
13:59
to 21 let's listen to what roman says
14:02
listen to the scripture for the creation
14:04
was subjected to futility
14:07
not willingly but because of him we
14:10
subjected it
14:11
in hope that the creation itself will be
14:13
set free
14:14
from its bondage to corruption and
14:16
obtain the freedom of the glory of the
14:19
children of
14:20
god so jesus came to restore that which
14:23
was lost because of the sin
14:25
of adam and eve and god glorified
14:29
jesus in his humanity and that's
14:31
important
14:32
god glorified jesus humanely because of
14:35
his suffering
14:35
of on the cross and we mentioned that in
14:38
chapter one
14:39
scripture says after making purification
14:41
for sins he sat down at the right hand
14:43
of god
14:44
and he was given in his humanity the
14:46
name that is above
14:48
every name the name son okay
14:51
and we talked about the time of his
14:53
begetting in chapter one
14:55
when he when jesus rose from the dead he
14:58
proved and he authenticated him
14:59
as the son of god now when jesus
15:02
actually
15:03
lived on planet earth he showed that he
15:05
had dominion over all things
15:07
because the winds obey him he defeated
15:10
what the diseases
15:11
the the blind see what the death here
15:15
and those that were diseased regain
15:17
their function the functionality of
15:19
their
15:19
their broken members okay and they were
15:22
he walked on water so he the fish obeyed
15:25
him remember when
15:27
peter went fishing he couldn't catch any
15:28
fish and then god told him
15:31
uh throw the nets on the right side and
15:33
he when he caught all his fish
15:34
so god was shown through jesus that i am
15:37
going to restore this mandate because
15:39
jesus is going to do that he did that on
15:42
the cross when he died
15:44
by the grace of god he tasted death on
15:46
our behalf he experienced
15:48
death he was separated from god on the
15:51
cross because
15:52
the sins of the whole world was poured
15:54
upon him and he said what did he say
15:55
before he died
15:57
he said father abba lama sabachthani
16:00
why have you forsaken me because at that
16:02
moment
16:04
all the wrath of god was poured upon
16:06
jesus and because of his suffering of
16:08
death because he
16:09
became obedient even obedient to death
16:11
on the cross god has given
16:13
jesus the name that is above every name
16:16
the name
16:17
son the name lord okay the name that is
16:20
above every name
16:21
god has given him that title the name
16:23
lord adonai
16:25
are curious if you want to use the greek
16:27
word i think
16:28
so when the sins of the whole world were
16:30
poured upon jesus
16:32
this is what he said why have you
16:33
forsaken me and at that very moment the
16:35
wrath of god
16:36
was poured upon jesus he being the lamb
16:39
of god
16:40
he satisfied the wrath of god and god
16:43
accepted his sacrifice and god did what
16:45
he raised him from the dead
16:47
to show that yes i've accepted it so the
16:50
resurrection of christ
16:51
proved that god was pleased with what
16:53
jesus did
16:54
and because he was pleased with him
16:56
death could not have any hold on him
16:58
because he did exactly what god
17:01
had asked him to do he said somewhere my
17:04
food is to do the will of him who sent
17:06
me
17:07
so because jesus did that now the
17:10
mandate that god has given in the
17:11
beginning in genesis
17:13
is going to be restored and at some
17:14
point at some point
17:16
we will reign with jesus we will serve
17:19
him we will reign with him and we're
17:21
gonna see that in ephesians but let's
17:23
keep going
17:24
i'm not done yet so what are the
17:26
implications of verse nine
17:29
verse nine is basically telling us that
17:31
god is now putting
17:32
all jesus enemies under his feet and at
17:35
the last
17:36
trumpet when his final enemy is defeated
17:39
we likewise shall reign with jesus
17:43
he is the one that has made it possible
17:45
for us it's not that we did it
17:46
but jesus made it possible okay
17:49
by becoming a man he came to intercede
17:53
for us he came to restore that which was
17:55
lost
17:56
so right now things may look desperate i
17:58
mean i'm struggling right now
18:00
there is struggle there is pain there is
18:02
tiredness there is just sometimes
18:04
despair
18:05
but even in in all those situations we
18:07
are more than conquerors because we know
18:09
that this is not the end
18:10
we know that someday somehow because god
18:14
promised them because jesus defeated the
18:16
enemy
18:17
we will be restored again and we will
18:20
reign with jesus
18:22
this is this is the kind of stuff that
18:23
gives you hope
18:25
okay because jesus gained the victory
18:27
and god is faithful and we know that
18:29
all things are going to end according to
18:31
god's word so we should rejoice in that
18:33
so then when we struggle
18:35
there should be a sense in which we
18:37
rejoice because we know that this is not
18:38
the end
18:39
this is the end okay so
18:42
i want to end this by looking at
18:44
ephesians uh chapter two
18:46
and i wanna read on the following verse
18:48
this is what the scripture says in
18:50
ephesians two verse one through uh ten i
18:53
wanna read the entire uh
18:55
portion and you were dead in your
18:58
trespasses and sin
19:00
in which you once walked following the
19:02
course of this world
19:04
following the prince of the power of the
19:06
air the spirit that is not
19:08
work in the sons of disobedience among
19:11
whom
19:11
we all once lived in the passions of our
19:15
flesh
19:16
carrying out the desires of the body and
19:18
the mind and whereby nature
19:20
children of wrath like the rest of
19:23
mankind
19:24
but god but
19:27
god being rich in mercy
19:30
because of the great love
19:33
with which he loved us even when we were
19:36
dead in our trespasses
19:39
made us alive together with
19:42
christ by grace you have been saved
19:45
and raised us up with him and seated
19:49
us with him in the heavenly places
19:52
in christ jesus you see that he seated
19:56
us with jesus in the heavenly places
19:58
so that in the coming ages he might show
20:02
the immeasurable riches of his grace in
20:04
his and in kindness
20:06
toward us in christ jesus this is why
20:09
god did this
20:10
that he might show the immeasurable
20:12
immeasurable
20:13
riches of his grace in in kindness
20:16
toward us in christ
20:17
jesus for by grace you have been saved
20:20
through faith and this is not your own
20:23
doing
20:24
it is the gift of god not a result of
20:26
work so that no one may boast
20:28
for we are his workmanship created in
20:31
christ
20:31
jesus for good works which god prepared
20:34
beforehand
20:35
that we should walk in them so in
20:38
hebrews chapter 2 verse 5
20:40
through 9 we learn that the reason why
20:42
we should really
20:44
not neglect this great salvation is
20:46
because of
20:47
what is to come because somewhere
20:50
somehow we will
20:51
reign with jesus there is more work to
20:54
be done
20:55
so we should be looking forward to that
20:57
to the place where we're going to when
20:59
he comes
20:59
back at the last trumpet that we would
21:02
be with him we will reign and we will
21:03
rule the world with jesus
21:06
okay the scripture says somewhere
21:07
blessed are they meek for they shall
21:09
inherit the earth
21:10
we will one day have dominion because
21:13
jesus
21:14
has showed it by his life and by his
21:17
death on the cross he restored that
21:18
broken fellowship so
21:20
one day we will reign with christ so the
21:22
salvation is like
21:24
there's so many layers to this salvation
21:26
and we should not just look at now
21:28
because someday somehow pain will end
21:31
sickness will end disease will end death
21:35
will end suffering will end and we will
21:37
reign we will have dominion over the
21:39
world
21:40
we will no longer be subjected to the
21:41
world but we will have dominion
21:43
with jesus christ and this is because
21:45
jesus did it for us
21:48
so you should take um some kind of re
21:51
find rejoice in these words and that's
21:54
what the scripture is telling us today
21:56
all right so i hope that this these
21:58
words have blessed you
21:59
and i look forward to the next time we
22:01
meet again like i said
22:02
i'm not sure when i'm gonna do this
22:04
again maybe next week
22:06
depends on it all depends on how the
22:08
lord chooses to
22:09
use me at that moment alright so have a
22:12
wonderful day and i'll see you next time
22:13
thank you
