Today we are going to be talking about what reverence for God looks like. The verse that led me to consider this topic is Hebrews 5:7,
7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus[a] offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
The verse is basically telling us that in his time as a man on planet earth, Jesus offered up prayers with loud cries and tears, and his prayers were heard because He had reverence for God the Father. ( His Father). We'll be taking a closer look at the verse and understanding its implications for us today.

hello good morning this is Toyota's calm
0:02
and if you followed my last lecture we
0:06
talked about Hebrews 5 verse 8 and the
0:10
verse was although he was a son Jesus
0:13
learned obedience through what he
0:15
suffered so if you've missed our study I
0:16
will invite you to go back and check it
0:18
out and I'll provide you with a link in
0:21
the description and just keep checking
0:24
that so today we're gonna talk about
0:26
verse 7 of the fifth chapter of Hebrews
0:29
and the scripture says he was heard
0:32
because of his reference so I'm gonna
0:36
jump into the gist after the lecture
0:39
this morning let's go into the
0:40
introduction so like I said we are going
0:42
to be talking about what reference for
0:44
God looks like so and reverse that led
0:47
me to consider this topic is Hebrews 5
0:49
verse 7 the scripture says in the days
0:52
of his flesh flesh Jesus offer our
0:56
prayers and supplications with loud
0:58
cries and tears to him
1:01
who was able to save him from death and
1:03
he was heard because of his reverence so
1:06
the verse is basically telling us that
1:08
it is time as a man on planet Earth
1:11
Jesus offered up prayers with loud cries
1:14
and tears and his prayers were heard
1:16
because he had a reverence for God the
1:19
Father his father so the first thing we
1:23
want to do is this we want to define the
1:24
word reverence now according to the
1:27
dictionary reverence is having a deep
1:29
respect for someone or something but
1:33
what does reverence for God mean
1:36
according to the word of the Lord
1:38
Himself we want to understand what it
1:40
means to have reverence for God in a
1:42
proper way okay so that's what we're
1:45
gonna be looking at today so the next
1:48
slide says a closer look at biblical
1:50
reverence
1:51
now this is important to know because we
1:54
live in a day and age where the art of
1:57
reverence is lost you know reverence is
2:00
almost like foreign to us
2:01
so what leads to reverence I said here
2:05
true humility leads to reverence Jesus
2:08
himself was God incarnate yet he did not
2:11
consider equality with God
2:13
something to be grasped or to hold on to
2:16
and if you look at Philippians 2 verse 5
2:19
to 10 we are told have this in mind
2:22
among yourselves which is yours in
2:25
Christ Jesus who though he was in a form
2:28
of God did not count equality with God a
2:32
thing to be grasped but emptied himself
2:35
by taking the form of a servant being
2:39
born in the likeness of men and being
2:41
found in human form he humbled himself
2:44
by becoming obedient to the point of
2:47
death even death on a cross therefore
2:50
God has highly exalted him and bestowed
2:54
on him the name that is above every name
2:58
so that at the name of Jesus every knee
3:01
should bow in heaven and on earth and
3:04
under earth and every tongue confess
3:07
that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory
3:09
of God the Father this is the work of
3:13
this is the word of the Lord so now that
3:17
we've read Philippians 2 verse 5 to 10
3:20
we are going to dive into the biblical
3:24
reference and what this has to do with
3:26
it scripture says have this in mind what
3:30
mind and the answer is in verse 6 to 8
3:33
Jesus exuded true meekness power under
3:37
control he was without sin and he lived
3:41
a perfect life it was every man who
3:45
could demand anything from God he will
3:48
be Jesus because he was equal to God in
3:51
every way because he was God but what
3:55
the Scriptures tell us he offered up
3:57
prayers with loud cries and tears why
3:59
because he humbled himself and didn't
4:02
consider equality with God something to
4:05
hold on to his divine attributes didn't
4:08
disappear because of his humanity yet he
4:11
didn't do anything outside they will of
4:14
God the Father he was without saying he
4:18
lived a perfect life and he lived the
4:22
perfect life that God requires of us so
4:25
if there was
4:26
ever a person that could demand things
4:29
from God that will be Jesus because he
4:32
had every right to do it because he
4:34
lived exactly how God wants him to live
4:38
you see that like if there was ever
4:40
anyone that could say god I want this
4:43
and this and this guy would have given
4:45
it to him because Jesus had the right to
4:48
demand those things but even him what
4:50
the scriptures say he didn't consider
4:53
equality with God a thing to be grasped
4:56
or to hold on to he emptied himself and
4:59
became obedient even obedient to death
5:01
on a cross
5:02
so again I'll repeat the last sentence
5:06
but what does scripture tell us he
5:08
offered our prayers with loud cries and
5:11
tears why because he humbled himself and
5:15
did not consider equality with God
5:18
something to hold on to his divine
5:21
attribute did not disappear because of
5:23
his humanity yet he did not do anything
5:27
outside the will of God the Father so he
5:30
sees reverence okay now we're gonna jump
5:33
on to the next thing and we're gonna
5:35
look at what irreverence looks like and
5:38
and there's a story in the Old Testament
5:40
that shows us what irreverence looks
5:42
like so we're gonna look at it in second
5:44
Kings verse 1 chapter 1 verse 1 to 16 so
5:48
we're gonna read a passage and we're
5:49
gonna come back to this in a second so
5:50
let me go on to that and we're gonna
5:52
read it so I'm gonna start from here and
5:56
you can follow on my screen now the Lord
6:00
the Lord's judgment on his ire Ahaziah
6:04
after Ahab's death Moab rebelled against
6:07
Israel now Ahaziah
6:09
had fallen through the lattice of his
6:11
upper room in Samaria and injured
6:13
himself so he sent messengers saying to
6:15
them go and consult
6:17
Beelzebub the God of Ekron to see if
6:20
I'll recover from my injury but the
6:23
angel of the Lord said to Elijah the
6:25
Tishbite
6:25
go up and meet the messengers of the
6:27
king of Samaria and ask them is it
6:30
because there is no God in Israel that
6:32
you are gone off to consult me about the
6:34
God of Ekron therefore this is what the
6:37
Lord says you will not leave the bed you
6:40
are lying
6:40
you will certainly die so Elijah went
6:44
when the messengers returned to the king
6:46
he asked them why have you come back and
6:49
he said a man came to meet us they
6:51
replied he said to us go back to the
6:54
king who sent you and tell him this is
6:56
what the Lord says is it because there
6:58
is no God in Israel that you are sending
7:00
messengers to consult bazi Bob
7:02
they got of Econ therefore you will not
7:05
live the bear you're lying on you will
7:06
certainly died the king asked him what
7:09
kind of man was it that came to meet you
7:11
and told you this and they replied he
7:14
had a garment of hair and had a leather
7:16
belt around his waist and the king said
7:19
that was Elijah the Tishbite then he
7:22
sent to Elisha a calf and with his
7:23
company of fifty men this is where
7:25
things get interesting the captain went
7:28
up to Elisha who was sitting on the top
7:30
of hill and say to him man of God the
7:32
King says come down and enlarge answer
7:35
the captain if I am a man of God may
7:37
fire come down from heaven and consume
7:40
you and your fifty men then fire fell
7:43
from heaven and consumed the captain and
7:46
his fifty men at least the king sent to
7:49
a larger another captain with his fifty
7:51
men the captain said oh man of God this
7:54
is what the King says come down at once
7:57
and Elisha replied if I am a man of God
8:00
Elisha replied may fire come down from
8:04
heaven and consume you and your fifty
8:05
men then the fire of God fell from
8:08
heaven and consumed him and his fifty
8:10
men so the king sent a third captain
8:13
with his fifty men this third captain
8:15
went up and fell on his knees before
8:16
Elisha and he said men of God he begged
8:21
please have respect for my life and the
8:25
lives of these fifty men your servants
8:28
see fire has fallen from heaven and
8:30
consumed the first two captains and all
8:32
their men but now have respect for my
8:35
life and the angel of the Lord said to
8:37
Elisha go down with him do not be afraid
8:40
do not be afraid of him
8:41
so Elisha got up and went down with him
8:44
to the king now we're gonna go back to
8:46
our presentation and we're gonna pick up
8:49
from here move this down quick
8:51
so here's the thing we want to learn
8:54
what irreverence looks like so what did
8:57
we learn from this passage we're gonna
8:59
look at it three requests more closely
9:01
the first one this is from the ESV then
9:05
the king sent to him a captain of fifty
9:07
movies fifty and he went up to Elisha
9:09
who was sitting on the top of a hill and
9:11
he say to him o man of God the King says
9:14
calm down for Elijah ends at the captain
9:18
of fifty if I am a man of God let fire
9:21
come down from heaven and consume you
9:23
and your fifty then fire came down from
9:25
heaven and consumed him and his fifty
9:28
see the man of God is a man in whom the
9:31
Spirit of God dwells so even the King is
9:35
subject to the Spirit of God so the
9:37
request of the king was irreverent and
9:39
consequently the Spirit of God corrected
9:43
the behavior by consuming the captain
9:45
and his fifty Elijah was basically
9:48
representing God and they disrespect
9:50
toward him was basically disrespect
9:53
toward God so God is in the genie and
9:55
cannot be controlled by men so do you
9:59
understand that when the man went up
10:00
there they say oh man of God the King
10:02
says calm down
10:04
you can't control the Spirit of God so
10:08
Elijah say if I'm a man of God let's
10:09
fire calm down and boom he happens so
10:12
there's another this is second delegate
10:14
so we'll see what happened ex so the
10:16
second one again the king sent to him
10:19
another captain of fifty men with his
10:21
fifty now you will think that by now the
10:23
King would have understood that look
10:26
fifty men
10:27
Christ a captain just got killed so what
10:31
do I need to do repentance and reference
10:33
well he still didn't get it
10:35
let's see what happens and he answered
10:37
and said to him o men of God this is the
10:40
King's order come down quickly but
10:43
Elisha answered him if I'm a man of God
10:45
led fire come down from heaven and
10:47
consume you and you're 50 then the fire
10:50
of God came down from heaven and
10:52
consumed him and is 50 so obviously the
10:55
second group didn't get the memo it
10:58
didn't matter that the sermon was from
10:59
the king the king himself like I said
11:01
earlier is subject to the commands of
11:03
God's not the other way around
11:05
and as a result this second wave also
11:08
perished because of the lack of
11:10
reverence for God and now there's a
11:13
third wave now let's swap or now again
11:17
the kinks and the cabin of a third 50
11:19
wave is 50 and the third captain of 50
11:21
went up and came and fell on his knees
11:24
before Elijah and entreated him all men
11:28
of God please let my life and the life
11:31
of these 50 servants of yours be
11:33
precious in your sight
11:35
behold fire came down from heaven and
11:38
consumed the former to captain of fifty
11:39
men with their fifties but now let my
11:42
life be precious in your sight then the
11:45
angel of the Lord said to Elisha go down
11:47
with him and do not be afraid of him you
11:50
see finally the third captain understood
11:53
that approaching a man of God required
11:56
reverence let me repeat that again
11:59
finally the third captain understood
12:02
that approaching a man of God required
12:06
reverence we can make that observation
12:08
from the world in red you see the words
12:11
in red right he fell on his knees and he
12:14
entreated him please let my life and a
12:16
life of these 50 servants of yours be
12:18
precious in your sight he's
12:21
acknowledging that he's in the presence
12:22
of a man of God in whom the Spirit of
12:26
God dwells so he's in the presence of
12:28
God himself through that man so what the
12:32
good thing also is this like Elijah
12:34
himself was subject to the angel of the
12:36
Lord Elijah could not bring down fire
12:39
from heaven without the consent and
12:42
without the word of the Lord he was the
12:45
agent of God and while he was the one
12:48
behind the visible actions the fire God
12:50
was the one behind the curtain so the
12:53
disrespect was not really directed to
12:55
what Elijah but to what God Himself you
12:59
see that
12:59
so while Elijah was the one in front of
13:02
the people the one behind Elijah was God
13:04
himself and God told him go with him
13:07
don't be afraid that he went so how do
13:09
we approach God is what we need to
13:11
understand now how do we come to God we
13:15
are learning reverence okay so let's go
13:17
to the next slide
13:19
how to come into the presence of the
13:21
Lord how to come into the presence of
13:24
the Lord
13:25
you know John just tells us somewhere I
13:27
think in Hebrews as well come to the
13:30
throne of grace with confidence to
13:32
receive grace in times of need okay that
13:35
does not give us the right to be
13:36
irreverent when we come before the Lord
13:39
approaching the throne of God requires
13:42
humility and reverence no one can
13:45
approach the throne of God unless God
13:47
permits it we can't come to the throne
13:50
of God on our own terms that's number
13:52
one we need to understand our supremacy
13:54
Jesus is the way the truth and the life
13:57
and no one can come to God unless
13:59
through Jesus because his righteousness
14:01
is imputed to us and as a result we can
14:04
come into the presence of God so let's
14:06
not forget that when we are going to the
14:08
presence of God that this is because of
14:10
Jesus's righteousness and what he has
14:12
done for us that we are allowed to come
14:15
into the presence of God so that
14:17
completely strips away our pride because
14:20
we have to humble ourselves and
14:22
recognize our inadequacy you see that
14:25
because Jesus was the only one who could
14:28
enter the presence of God according to
14:31
his own marriage and even he had a
14:33
reverence for his father so who are you
14:36
and who are my to think that we can come
14:38
we can treat God with contempt and
14:40
irreverence if the perfect son of God
14:43
Himself offered up prayers with loud
14:47
cries and tears and because his prayers
14:50
were heard because of his reverence who
14:51
are you and one me Who am I to think
14:54
that I can come into the presence of God
14:56
without reverence I hope this leads you
14:59
and I to come to reconsider how we
15:02
approach the throne of grace we are
15:04
called to come to the throne of grace
15:07
with confidence but not our confidence
15:09
but the confidence given to us by Jesus
15:11
and because our master himself was
15:14
reverent we have to come to the throne
15:17
of grace with reverence you can't come
15:21
to the presence of God with your own
15:23
attitude with this attitude of I deserve
15:26
to be here doesn't know how he works yes
15:29
come with confidence but because the
15:31
confidence given
15:32
you come from Christ and because Christ
15:34
himself was reverent his children will
15:38
be reverent so when we come into the
15:40
presence of God let's remember that to
15:43
be reverent and the scripture says Jesus
15:46
prayers were heard because he was
15:48
reverent so therefore we have to show
15:52
their reverence and ask the Holy Spirit
15:53
Himself to indwell us and to lead us to
15:56
be reverent and to humble ourselves and
15:58
know that we are in the presence of the
16:00
Living God that created the whole host
16:03
of heaven and the whole universe you
16:05
gotta understand that you're not coming
16:07
to the president even if you were to go
16:09
to the President of the United State of
16:11
America or any president so to speak how
16:14
would you come into his presence
16:16
reverence right you show reverence now
16:20
how much more God when you come into the
16:22
presence of God sure reverence and I
16:25
will exhort you to do that and to ask
16:27
God Himself to cleanse your film of your
16:30
own pride and ask you to open your eyes
16:33
so that when you come into the presence
16:34
of God you understand that you are in
16:36
the Holy of Holies Isaiah the prophet
16:39
fell on his face
16:40
Moses would even look toward the bushes
16:43
Peter when he caught all is there are
16:46
the fishes or the fish he said to Jesus
16:48
and wait for me I'm a sinful man because
16:51
you are entering that presence that you
16:53
know that you in the prayers of a
16:54
perfect being that is perfect in every
16:57
way if that has now pushed you to be
16:59
reverent then we have a problem so I
17:02
will encourage you to really ask the
17:04
Holy Spirit himself to clean you and to
17:07
lead you to have that reverence okay and
17:10
go back and read that passage even more
17:12
so have a wonderful day and I'll see you
17:14
next time thank you
17:21
you
