We are told in James 2:15-17,
4 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
In chapter 2 of the book of James, he’s addressing a few issues within the church. One of those had to do with certain people who claimed that all they needed to be called children of God was faith. At first glance, it sounds like their statement is consistent with biblical Truth but their understanding of faith differed from the Biblical definition of genuine true faith. Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit did say that by the works of the law shall no man be justified. But those individuals misinterpreted Paul’s words and used it for a license to do whatever they wanted. They were claiming in essence that all one needed was faith alone , which sounds like it is parallel to Paul’s declarations. But the difference between their understanding of faith and Paul’s were not the same. Paul never mentioned a faith that was alone , but a faith that was authenticated by a renewed life. So we will see how James is going to refute their claims as he explains the effects of genuine faith, see video above

hey good morning this is calm
0:03
today we are going to look at james
0:05
chapter 2 verse 17
0:07
and the verse reads faith without works
0:10
is dead
0:10
a lot of people know about this verse
0:12
and they've quoted it
0:14
and i believe sometimes people misquote
0:16
this verse because they don't truly
0:17
understand what the passage is saying
0:19
so what we have to do this morning is
0:21
we're going to look at the passage
0:23
and the verse within this context to
0:24
truly understand why james
0:27
was intending uh to communicate i was
0:29
trying to communicate when he
0:31
wrote those words in the second chapter
0:33
of the book of james
0:35
so that's what we are going to do and
0:37
i'm gonna give you a quick intro
0:39
and uh we are going to go from there
0:42
right so
0:44
basically uh he's addressing a few
0:46
issues within the church
0:48
and one of those had to do with like
0:50
certain people who claimed
0:52
that all they needed to be called
0:54
children of god
0:55
was faith and at first glance it sounds
0:58
like
0:59
their statement is like consistent with
1:01
uh biblical truth
1:03
but their understanding of faith
1:05
differed from the biblical
1:07
definition of genuine true faith
1:10
now paul when he was writing in romans
1:12
he said
1:13
by the works of the law shall no flesh
1:16
or no man be justified
1:18
but those people they they mis
1:20
interpreted paul's word
1:22
and used it for a license to do whatever
1:25
they wanted
1:26
and basically they were claiming in
1:28
essence that all that one needed
1:31
was faith alone which sounds like it is
1:34
parallel to paul's declarations but the
1:37
difference between
1:38
their understanding of faith and paul's
1:40
word
1:41
were not the same paul never mentioned a
1:44
faith that was alone but paul mentioned
1:48
a faith that was authenticated
1:50
by a renewed life so we are going to see
1:54
how james is going to refute
1:56
these claims as he explains the
1:59
implications and effects
2:00
of genuine faith now this is not
2:04
like a problem that was happening
2:06
happening in the ancient world
2:08
like even today this is still relevant
2:10
because some people
2:11
say well i'm covered by the blood of
2:13
jesus so i'm okay
2:15
and and and they go well the bible says
2:17
all you need is faith
2:19
and they don't truly understand what the
2:21
passage is trying to communicate
2:23
it's not a faith that is alone and and
2:26
this is why it is important that we
2:28
study this passage and study this verse
2:31
within its context to truly understand
2:34
the meaning of
2:36
genuine faith so let's do that
2:39
so james gives us in an illustration
2:44
in verse 15 and 16 so we are going to
2:47
look at the illustration
2:48
and the example and we are going to
2:49
contrast it with what jesus does
2:52
to truly understand what james was
2:53
trying to get at
2:55
so we are told in verse 14
2:58
of james chapter 2 what good is it my
3:02
brothers
3:02
if someone says he has faith but does
3:06
not have
3:06
works can that faith
3:10
save him and then he gives
3:13
the example if your brother or sister
3:17
is poorly clothed and lacking in daily
3:20
food
3:21
and one of you says to them go in peace
3:24
be warmed and filled without giving them
3:28
the things needed for the body what
3:31
good is that now you get what james is
3:34
saying there right
3:36
basically the man in this example
3:40
he spoke kind word to the one in need
3:43
but those words
3:44
did absolutely nothing to help the one
3:47
in need
3:48
and that's because there was no power
3:51
behind
3:52
those empty words the kind word spoken
3:56
produced no action in the header the guy
3:58
heard it
3:59
the guy he need heard those words but he
4:02
produced no action
4:04
the man said go in peace be warmed and
4:07
filled and he did nothing else to help
4:10
the guy
4:10
need he just spoke those words so
4:12
basically he spoke
4:14
empty words okay
4:18
and and remember at the basis james is
4:21
trying to show that faith without works
4:23
is dead
4:23
so now let's keep this in mind and now
4:26
we are going to contrast this example
4:28
what jesus does and to look to do that
4:30
we are going to look at matthew
4:33
chapter 5 verse 1 to 3 and we're also
4:36
going to look at
4:37
luke uh john chapter 1 verse 1 to 9.
4:40
there are two examples that i want us to
4:42
look at so we're gonna go there look at
4:44
those examples and we're gonna come back
4:45
here in a minute
4:46
now in matthew chapter eight verse one
4:48
to three there's an example
4:51
when jesus came down from the mountain
4:54
great crowds
4:55
followed him and behold a leper
4:58
came to him and knelt before him saying
5:01
lord
5:02
if you will you can make me clean
5:07
and jesus stretched out his hand and
5:10
touched him
5:10
saying i will be
5:14
clean and immediately his leprosy
5:18
was cleansed basically jesus
5:21
spoke the word and the man was
5:24
cleansed jesus spoke the word and the
5:27
word was
5:28
be clean and immediately his leprosy was
5:31
cleansed
5:32
keep that in mind now let's go to john
5:34
chapter one verse one to nine
5:36
now no no john chapter five i am so
5:40
wrong on it i don't know what i was
5:42
thinking guys forgive me
5:44
i mean john chapter five verse one to
5:46
nine
5:48
okay sometime later
5:51
jesus went up to jerusalem for one of
5:53
the jewish festivals
5:55
now there is in jerusalem near the ship
5:57
get a pool which in our make
5:59
is called bethesda and which is
6:01
surrounded by
6:02
five covered colonnade here a great
6:06
number of disabled people used to lie
6:08
the blind the lame and the paralyzed
6:12
one who was there had been an invalid
6:13
for 38 years
6:15
when jesus saw him lying there and
6:17
learned that he had been in this
6:19
condition for a long
6:20
time he asked the man do you want to be
6:23
healed or do you want to get well
6:26
and the man replied sir i have no one to
6:29
help me
6:30
into the pool when the water is stirred
6:33
while i'm trying to get in someone else
6:35
goes down before me or ahead of me
6:38
and then jesus said to the man get up
6:41
pick up your mat
6:42
and walk and at once the man was cured
6:45
he picked up his mat and walked
6:48
now this is incredible again jesus
6:50
speaks a word
6:52
actually a few words get up pick up your
6:54
mat and walk and at once
6:56
the man was cured he picked up his mind
6:58
and walked now keep that in mind okay
7:00
let's go back to our illustration here
7:04
so basically you see the difference
7:06
between the two
7:07
right
7:13
jesus told the man be clean and he was
7:15
clean and jesus told the crippled man
7:18
get up and walk and immediately he got
7:19
up and walk
7:21
so the difference between the two is in
7:23
in the
7:24
response from the spoken words basically
7:27
the differences in the effect of the
7:29
words that they both spoke
7:31
the man in the illustration spoke
7:34
lifeless word
7:35
he said go in peace be warm and filled
7:38
nothing happened
7:39
jesus spoke be clean and jesus said
7:43
get up and walk and things happen jesus
7:46
spoke
7:47
life-giving word living words the man in
7:50
the illustration spoke
7:52
lifeless word basically what james is
7:55
saying is this
7:57
faith that is authentic is effective
8:00
and causes an action in the one who
8:02
possesses it
8:04
let me say that again faith that is
8:07
authentic is effective and causes
8:10
an action in the one who possesses it
8:13
all right and then we're going to
8:16
see what james is really trying to teach
8:19
james
8:19
was making a strong argument for the
8:22
powerful living word of god
8:24
the word of god produces a faith that is
8:26
active
8:28
for faith to be deemed authentic you
8:30
must produce an
8:31
action in the hearer and the better of
8:34
that faith
8:36
therefore a faith that is not
8:38
accompanied by
8:39
evidence of a renewed life and works of
8:42
righteousness
8:43
is not authentic because the word of god
8:46
is living
8:47
and active let me say that again
8:50
a faith that is not accompanied by
8:53
evidence of a renewed life
8:54
and works of righteousness is not
8:57
authentic
8:58
because the word of god is living and
9:00
active
9:01
this is why without faith it's
9:03
impossible to please god
9:05
authentic faith comes from god that's
9:08
why james
9:08
says show me your faith without works
9:11
and i will show you my faith
9:12
by my works now james wasn't counting
9:16
on his own ability to prove that his
9:19
faith was genuine
9:20
but he fully relied on the truth
9:23
and the powerful word of god to do
9:25
exactly
9:27
what god centered out for in
9:30
isaiah 55 11 we are told and i'm gonna
9:32
read that
9:33
to you let's read isaiah 55 11.
9:37
isaiah 55 11 listen to this word
9:41
please listen to this word carefully
9:45
god says so is my word
9:48
that goes out from my mouth
9:52
it will not return to me empty
9:56
but will accomplish what i desire
9:59
and achieve the purpose for which
10:02
i sent it did you hear that
10:05
i think i want to read that again
10:08
and i could read this word like 10 000
10:10
times
10:12
so is my word that goes out from my
10:14
mouth
10:16
it will not return to me empty but will
10:18
accomplish what i desire
10:20
and achieve the purpose for which i sent
10:22
it this is why when jesus said
10:24
be clean the leper was cleaned this is
10:27
why when jesus said
10:28
get up and walk to the crippled man he
10:30
got up and walked because
10:32
god's word produced an action
10:36
and faith comes from god because we are
10:38
told in romans 10 verse 17
10:42
faith comes by hearing and hearing by
10:44
the word of god
10:46
the word of god produces faith that
10:48
produces an action
10:49
do you see that and this is what james
10:51
is trying to tell us
10:53
okay james is really telling us about
10:55
the power
10:57
of the word of god our faith
11:01
comes from believing the word of god
11:03
because god is the only one that can
11:05
create
11:06
faith through his word and to understand
11:09
this
11:10
let's look at luke 17 verse 5 to 10.
11:13
this is really important now let's look
11:16
at luke 17
11:17
verse 5-10 now the apostles say to the
11:20
lord
11:20
increase our faith and he replied
11:24
if you have faith as small as a mustard
11:26
seed
11:27
you can say that this tree be uprooted
11:30
and planted in the sea
11:31
and he will obey you so let's stop for a
11:33
second and then analyze this
11:36
so they are saying to jesus
11:39
increase our faith right so what does
11:43
that question imply
11:45
and then what does jesus reveal let's
11:47
look at it
11:49
so if they're asking jesus to increase
11:51
their faith
11:53
they are somewhere assuming that they
11:54
have faith right and then jesus says to
11:57
them
11:58
in verse 6 or luke 17
12:01
if you had faith like a grain of mustard
12:03
seed
12:04
you could say to the street be uprooted
12:07
and planted in the sea and will obey you
12:10
so what did jesus tell them
12:13
he's telling the disciples you don't
12:15
even have faith
12:16
you don't even have a scintilla of faith
12:19
because if you did
12:20
you could have said something and these
12:23
three would have obeyed you
12:24
and because you can't do that i'm
12:27
telling you you don't even have faith
12:28
because
12:29
faith comes from me
12:32
and i'm paraphrasing jesus i'm not
12:34
saying meat i i'm saying jesus
12:36
so jesus is telling them faith comes
12:39
from me
12:40
and he's going to prove it to them in a
12:41
second and i'm going to show you that
12:44
so now he was
12:47
teaching them that faith is a result of
12:50
god
12:51
through his holy spirit working in a
12:53
person to will
12:54
and act according to his purpose and to
12:57
make his point clear he gives them an
12:59
example
13:00
in verse 7 and 10 he says will anyone of
13:04
you who has a servant plowing or keeping
13:06
sheep say to him when he has come
13:08
in from the field come at once and
13:11
recline a table
13:12
will he not rather say to him prepare
13:14
supper for me
13:15
and dress properly and serve me while i
13:17
eat and drink and
13:18
afterward you will eat and drink now
13:22
there's a servant
13:23
does he thank the servant does the
13:24
master thank the servant because he did
13:26
what was commanded
13:28
so you also when you have done all that
13:30
you recommended
13:31
say we are on worthy servant we have
13:35
only done what was our duty
13:36
do you see what jesus is communicating
13:39
he's telling the disciples
13:41
make no mistake about this because when
13:44
you've done
13:45
everything that i've commended you i
13:47
don't need to thank you for it because
13:49
you've done what was commanded because i
13:51
spoke the word
13:53
and you obeyed because my word produced
13:56
an action
13:57
so faith comes from me
14:00
is jesus what's jesus saying to them you
14:03
didn't do this thing because you you had
14:05
power you did this because i
14:06
commanded it in you and he produced an
14:10
action because my word is living and
14:11
active
14:12
you see that so basically if you and i
14:16
can do anything at all that is good
14:19
if you can preach the word of god if you
14:21
can sing in church
14:22
if you can teach the word of god if you
14:24
can work hard
14:26
fill in the blanks is because god made
14:28
it possible
14:30
by creating his desire in us to do
14:33
his will and to perfect his will in us
14:36
so we can take
14:37
zero credit for every good work
14:40
because every good work begins with god
14:44
and ends with god for god's own
14:47
glory i hope you get it and this is why
14:50
james is so adamant
14:51
about rejecting those guys and their
14:54
misunderstanding of
14:55
faith and works so what can we learn
14:57
from this
14:59
genuine faith according to james doesn't
15:02
come alone
15:03
it comes with works of righteousness
15:06
and this is true biblical faith
15:10
faith is made perfect by the presence of
15:13
righteous
15:14
living a person that has fully been born
15:18
again
15:19
will live according to the new nature
15:22
the one that bears the image of god or
15:25
the son of god
15:26
and we know that jesus lived righteously
15:29
and now we are told in galatians 5 22-23
15:33
but the fruit of the spirit is love joy
15:36
peace patience kindness goodness
15:40
faithfulness gentleness self-control
15:43
against such things there is no law and
15:46
those who belong to christ
15:47
jesus have crucified the flesh with his
15:50
passions and desires
15:53
basically what james is saying is this
15:55
do not
15:56
deceive yourself if you have
15:59
true genuine faith you will be
16:02
transformed and you will begin to have
16:05
works of righteousness to authenticate
16:08
your faith
16:09
because when jesus speaks life-giving
16:11
words to you
16:13
and gives you his spirit guess what the
16:16
sanctifying work of the holy spirit
16:17
begins and you begin to change and you
16:19
go from glory to glory
16:21
you're not going to be perfect
16:22
immediately but guess what
16:24
every day you're going to be sanctified
16:26
you're going to sin
16:28
less and you're going to love the things
16:29
of god more because the new nature
16:32
is in you and the new nature is
16:33
producing works of righteousness
16:35
because you begin you begin to bear the
16:37
fruits of the spirit
16:39
so if those fruits of the spirit are not
16:41
evident in your life
16:43
you are self-deceived make no mistakes
16:45
if you still
16:46
love your sin to the point where you
16:47
don't hate it anymore i'm not saying
16:49
you're perfect
16:50
but i'm saying you begin to really feel
16:54
and and then know when you grieve the
16:56
holy spirit you get convicted
16:58
and you want to change those things and
17:00
again because god is good
17:02
he speaks life-giving words to use to
17:04
you to equip you
17:06
to change okay it's not like the man in
17:09
the in the example that goes
17:10
be warm be filled now when god says
17:14
i will make you clean he begins to clean
17:16
you because god's word is powerful and
17:18
we saw that
17:19
so when god begins to speak those living
17:21
words to you through
17:22
the word of god changes happen
17:26
so that's why you change and that's why
17:29
you can't have
17:30
genuine faith without bearing fruit it's
17:33
impossible
17:34
so if you see a person that claims they
17:36
have faith and you see the evidence in
17:38
their life and you
17:40
prove something else then don't believe
17:41
them the scripture also says by their
17:44
fruits
17:44
you shall know them right so the fruits
17:47
of righteousness
17:48
authenticate us and they show that we
17:50
really have been
17:51
saved and we've been called because the
17:53
holy spirit
17:54
does change you you're not going to be
17:57
the same you're going to change
18:00
so what can you learn from this i'll say
18:02
this you cannot claim to have faith
18:05
and remain unchanged you are
18:07
self-deceived
18:08
and there are a lot of people like that
18:10
they say well
18:11
the bible say love covers over sins so
18:14
therefore i'm covered
18:15
i'm covered by the blood of christ but
18:17
jesus died
18:19
not only to cleanse you of your sins but
18:20
to also give you the power to live
18:23
righteously before him so there's
18:25
there's a lot of things
18:27
god doesn't just wipe your sins and okay
18:30
go do whatever you want no
18:31
no the spirit comes now and they speak
18:33
now you have a new nature
18:35
and the old is being crucified daily
18:39
okay so i will exhort you
18:42
to examine yourself to see if you're
18:44
truly saved don't be deceived
18:46
i'll see you next time
