And The Prayer Of Faith Will Heal The Sick, How Does That Happen, A Closer Look At James 5:15
Feb 20, 2025
The prayer of faith will heal the sick; how are we supposed to understand what James was saying in James 5:15
And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.
Does it mean that when I pray and muster up faith in my prayer, the sick person I’m praying for will get well? If that’s the case, if the sick person does not get well as a result of my prayer, does that mean that I don’t or didn’t conjure up enough faith? These are things that have caused many people to discredit God’s work and create doubts. Sometimes people that don’t heal after being prayed for are told they didn’t receive recovery because of their lack of faith, and those accusing misquote scriptures to back up their claims. We really need to understand what James is conveying in this verse and to do that, let’s understand what faith means. According to Hebrews 11:1 faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we believe. So how do we acquire faith is the real question? I'll invite you to watch the presentation above in its entirety.

hello good morning guys uh today we are
0:03
going to talk about
0:04
james 5 15. again this is study by
0:07
types.com
0:08
and this is a passage that i believe a
0:11
lot of people don't quite understand and
0:12
it's been used a lot in churches
0:15
especially when somebody's sick or
0:17
somebody's struggling with something
0:19
and the pastor and the elders get
0:20
together and they quote on james 5 15
0:23
and the scripture says uh if anyone is
0:27
sick
0:27
let him call the elders and let him
0:29
anoint him with oil
0:31
and the prayer offered in faith would
0:33
make the sick person well
0:35
the lord the lord will raise him up if
0:38
they have sinned they will be forgiven
0:40
and i've heard that verse and i've
0:43
actually used it too i prayed and i said
0:45
the lord you say it
0:46
and the prayer offered in faith will
0:48
make the sick person well
0:50
and the question is this does it mean
0:53
that when i pray
0:54
a master of faith in my prayer the sick
0:57
person i'm praying for will get well is
0:59
that what that passage means
1:00
and if that's the case if the sick
1:02
person does not get well as a result of
1:04
my prayer
1:05
does that mean that i don't or didn't
1:07
conjure up enough
1:08
faith now these are things that have
1:10
caused many people to discredit
1:12
god's work and create doubt
1:16
and sometimes people that don't heal
1:18
after being prayed for
1:19
are told you didn't get healed or you
1:21
didn't recover because of your lack of
1:23
faith
1:24
and those accusing usually they misquote
1:26
scriptures
1:27
to back up their claims they they use
1:30
the scripture of
1:31
the the kid that was struggling
1:35
and that was demon possessed and
1:38
the disciples trying to pray for him and
1:40
he didn't get healed and when jesus
1:41
comes back from the mountain
1:43
jesus tells his disciples uh
1:46
he they asked him how come we can cast
1:48
out the demons
1:50
and and and jesus says to them it's
1:52
because of your lack of faith
1:54
or your own unbelief so they use that to
1:56
back up their claim
1:57
so my question is if we really need to
2:00
understand what james is conveying
2:02
in this verse and to do that let's
2:03
understand what faith means
2:06
that's the primary uh objective is first
2:09
we need to understand what is the
2:10
meaning
2:11
of having faith or praying in faith so
2:14
according to hebrews 11 1
2:16
scripture says faith is being sure of
2:18
what we hope for
2:20
and certain of what we believe that's in
2:23
the niv
2:24
other versions say say differently uh
2:28
so but i'm going to use the niv for the
2:30
sake of on this video
2:32
so the question is how do we acquire
2:34
faith
2:35
is a real question that's what we want
2:37
to know and and we're going to dive into
2:39
scriptures and understand what this all
2:41
means to us
2:43
so now romans 10
2:46
17 says faith comes by hearing
2:50
and hearing comes by the word of god
2:53
so it gives the answer to the question
2:55
how do we acquire faith
2:57
faith comes by hearing and hearing by
3:00
the word of god
3:01
so faith is a gift from god
3:05
it is produced by the powerful word of
3:07
god
3:08
so faith is not acquired it is received
3:13
in other words you can't acquire faith
3:16
by your own will
3:17
or your own power it is a gift from god
3:21
and it is god who works in us both to
3:23
will
3:24
and act according to his purpose that's
3:26
what philippians 2 13 says
3:28
so you can't speak things into existence
3:33
because you and i are not god i can't
3:36
speak anything into existence because i
3:39
am not god
3:40
only god can do that he is holy
3:44
okay keep that in mind i'll say that one
3:46
more time you cannot
3:48
speak things into existence because you
3:51
and i
3:52
are not god you can't heal anyone
3:56
by our own willpower or by quoting
3:59
scriptures
4:00
and thinking by muscling up some kind of
4:02
faith in yourself
4:04
you can do that remember peter once
4:08
asked jesus master increase
4:12
our faith and what jesus said to him
4:15
jesus said
4:16
if you had faith as little as a mustard
4:19
seed
4:20
you could say to this mountain move and
4:22
he will obey you
4:24
well basically jesus was trying to
4:26
communicate to his disciples is this
4:28
you don't even have a scintilla of faith
4:31
in you
4:32
because you can't produce faith on your
4:35
own
4:36
he was erasing any thinking in peter
4:40
mind i might have led him to believe
4:42
that he could produce faith
4:44
on his own or by his own willpower you
4:46
see jesus was shown to peter
4:49
you can't produce faith because you
4:51
don't even have a centilla of faith in
4:52
you
4:53
apart from me okay so i'll show you the
4:56
proof in in john
4:57
in john 5. so let's go to john 5
5:00
and i'm going to show you why i'm saying
5:02
it it's a very important passage that
5:04
is dismissed sometimes and i think is
5:07
important
5:08
so the healing at the pool on the
5:10
sabbath now i'll read
5:12
only for like five like five verses the
5:15
scripture says
5:16
after this there was a feast of the jews
5:19
and jesus went up to jerusalem
5:21
now the reason jerusalem by the ship get
5:24
a pool
5:24
in aramaic called bethesda which has
5:28
five roofed colonnades indeed lay a
5:30
multitude of invalids
5:32
blind lame and paralyzed one man
5:35
was there who had been an invalid for 38
5:38
years
5:39
when jesus saw him lying there and knew
5:42
that he had only been there a long time
5:44
he said to him do you want to be healed
5:48
and the sick man answered him sir i have
5:52
no one to put me into the pool when the
5:54
water is stirred up
5:55
and while i'm going another steps down
5:57
before me
5:58
and jesus said to him get up take up
6:01
your bed
6:02
and walk and at once the man was healed
6:06
and he took up his bed and walked now
6:09
let's go back
6:10
now here's the question you have to ask
6:12
yourself this
6:13
specific question was that man healed
6:17
by his faith or was he healed by the
6:19
word of god
6:20
coming from god himself in the person of
6:22
jesus
6:24
the point is this you see that
6:28
faith is a result of god's own work and
6:30
word
6:32
jesus spoke the word and the man got up
6:35
and walked
6:36
so the healing had absolutely
6:39
zero to do with that man because jesus
6:42
asked him do you want to be healed
6:44
he didn't say yes i believe in you heal
6:46
me jesus spoke the word
6:49
and this man was healed so faith
6:52
comes by hearing and hearing by the word
6:53
of god jesus spoke the word
6:56
and the healing took place so what james
6:58
is saying
6:59
in this is this like the prayer of faith
7:03
is a prayer that god himself has
7:05
ordained
7:06
in you to pray i'm going to repeat that
7:09
again
7:10
the prayer of faith that james
7:13
is referring to in his scripture is
7:16
the prayer that god himself has ordained
7:19
you to pray or in you to pray it is not
7:23
a prayer that you've concocted yourself
7:25
it is a prayer that comes from the heart
7:27
of god
7:29
through you to achieve god's own purpose
7:32
for god's own glory
7:34
it is not a matter of you commanding
7:36
anything into existence but rather
7:39
your willing submission to do the will
7:41
of god
7:42
whether by life death sickness
7:46
healing etc right
7:49
i'm going to repeat that again it is not
7:50
a matter of you commanding
7:52
anything into existence but rather
7:55
your willing submission to do the will
7:58
of god
7:59
whether by life by sickness
8:02
by healing or by whatever god ordains
8:08
this is very important so the prayer of
8:10
faith
8:11
finds his origin in the mind of god this
8:14
is why john said in first john 5
8:16
14 and 15 this is the confidence
8:20
we have in approaching god that if we
8:23
ask
8:23
anything according to his will he hears
8:25
us and if we know that he hears us
8:28
whatever we ask we know that we have we
8:30
have what we've asked
8:31
of him so we've already established that
8:34
faith
8:34
comes by hearing and hearing by the word
8:36
of god so it is god who decides
8:39
whether to produce that faith in us to
8:42
ask for things that run
8:44
parallel to his purpose and will so the
8:46
will of the lord will
8:47
always glorify the lord and let's take
8:50
the example of
8:50
lazarus in john 11.
8:53
was sick and his sisters send a
8:56
messenger to jesus
8:57
and they say the man your friend that
8:59
you love is sick
9:01
so basically the implication is come to
9:04
heal
9:04
him that's the implication right but
9:08
it was more glorifying to god that
9:10
lazarus died and rises from the dead
9:13
than from him to be healed from his
9:15
disease
9:16
okay his sisters like
9:19
mary and martha their theology needed to
9:21
be corrected in accordance with the will
9:23
of god
9:24
and i'm going to point out a couple of
9:25
things a couple of misconceptions that
9:28
both sisters heard about the person of
9:29
jesus
9:30
and he was going to correct that with
9:32
the death and rising from the dead from
9:34
la
9:34
of lazarus okay so let's let's let's
9:37
look at that real quick
9:39
so the sisters they sent to him and
9:41
saying lord
9:42
he whom you love is ill but when jesus
9:45
heard it he said
9:47
this illness does not lead to death
9:50
it is for the glory of god so that the
9:52
son of god may be glorified
9:55
through it okay now verse five is very
9:59
important
10:00
and i i put something in right there for
10:02
you for you now scripture says now jesus
10:05
loved martha and her sister in lazarus
10:08
so when he heard that lazarus was ill
10:12
he stayed two days longer in the place
10:14
where he was
10:16
jesus love for those three people led
10:19
him to stay
10:20
longer you see that in our mind we're
10:23
thinking that is twisted
10:24
how can you love someone and let them
10:26
die in jesus mind
10:28
because i love him i love them i'm gonna
10:31
allow
10:32
lazarus to die because i have a greater
10:33
purpose in mind
10:35
you see how we we always have to be
10:39
in line with the will of god because
10:40
jesus knew that there was a greater
10:42
purpose
10:42
he says this illness does not lead to
10:45
death
10:47
okay it does not end in death but for
10:49
the glory of god so let's see what
10:51
happens
10:52
now mary and martha basically wanted
10:54
jesus to come
10:55
possibly lay his hand on lazarus to heal
10:57
him like they've seen him do it and one
11:00
thing they forgot
11:01
a fundamental thing is this like jesus
11:03
didn't have to be
11:04
there to heal lazarus remember
11:08
all jesus had to do was say the word and
11:11
lazarus could be healed
11:13
and i don't think mary and martha
11:14
realized that remember what jesus said
11:16
to the roman centurion
11:18
he said to him he commanded him for his
11:19
faith he says i have not seen such great
11:21
faith in israel
11:23
right mary and martha didn't unders they
11:25
did not understand the power
11:27
of the word of god in jesus they wanted
11:30
jesus to come so that lazarus wouldn't
11:32
be dead because mary said
11:35
later on if you had been here
11:38
lazarus would not have died didn't
11:42
jesus didn't have to be there all he had
11:45
to do was speak the word and lazarus
11:47
would be healed but didn't understand
11:49
the power of the word of god
11:51
so jesus used lazarus death
11:54
to accomplish that he was greater for
11:56
god's glory
11:58
for lazarus to be dead because there was
11:59
something that the lord was teaching
12:01
them
12:02
we don't always understand it as people
12:04
okay
12:05
now jesus loved mary martin lazarus
12:08
so he delayed his coming in order to
12:11
correct their theology
12:12
he could have easily healed lazarus but
12:16
verse 4 tells us why jesus delayed this
12:19
illness does not lead to death if it is
12:21
for the glory of god so that the son of
12:23
god
12:24
may be glorified through it the glory of
12:27
god
12:28
understanding that jesus was the
12:30
resurrection and the reason
12:32
for the resurrection it leads me to my
12:34
next uh
12:35
point which is martha
12:39
she also had a little bit of
12:41
misconception that needed to be
12:42
corrected
12:44
jesus said to her your brother will rise
12:46
again
12:47
and martha said to him i know that he
12:49
will rise again in the resurrection on
12:51
the last day
12:53
and jesus said to her i am the
12:55
resurrection
12:56
and the life whoever believes in me
12:58
though he die
13:00
yes shall he live and everyone who lives
13:03
and believes in me shall never die
13:04
do you believe this and she said to him
13:07
yes lord
13:08
i believe that you are the christ the
13:09
son of god who is coming into the world
13:12
see martha needed to understand just
13:14
like all of us that the only reason why
13:16
lazarus arrives again on the last day
13:19
was jesus
13:21
because he said somewhere because i live
13:23
you'll also live
13:24
john 14 19. so the people needed to know
13:28
that the resurrection was only possible
13:31
because of the author
13:32
of the resurrection who was standing
13:34
right in front of them
13:36
that is jesus had jesus simply healed
13:39
lazarus and prevented his death the
13:40
glory of god would have
13:42
never been revealed in that way martha
13:45
would have never understood what
13:46
that the reason for the resurrection is
13:49
the lord jesus
13:50
so the people would have of course
13:52
rejoiced but god's greater purpose
13:55
would have been concealed from their
13:57
eyes
13:58
it's only through the death of lazarus
14:00
that it could have been revealed
14:02
you see that so it was more important
14:04
for lazarus
14:05
to die and rise from the dead because he
14:07
was that was going to
14:09
really show the glory of god and martha
14:11
needed to understand that jesus was the
14:13
reason
14:14
for the resurrection because he told
14:17
i am the resurrection you see that
14:21
so so what's the takeaway
14:24
what's the big takeaway from all this
14:26
chapter now the prayer of faith
14:29
is the prayer that god himself through
14:31
his spirit in us
14:32
leads us to pray and that's the only
14:34
prayer that brings about god's own
14:36
purpose
14:37
we don't determine by some kind of
14:39
self-authority
14:40
whether someone gets healed or not the
14:43
holy spirit
14:44
is the one one second guys
14:48
like i was saying we don't determine by
14:50
some kind of self
14:52
authority whether someone gets healed or
14:54
not
14:55
the holy spirit is the one who moves us
14:57
to pray according to the will of god
15:00
so we are told in romans 8 that we don't
15:02
even know how to pray or what to pray
15:04
for
15:04
because our flesh which is the old
15:07
sinful nature
15:07
is constant is constantly inemitting
15:11
against the friends of god
15:13
so our prayers is to ask god to move us
15:16
through his spirit to pray the will of
15:18
god and i'll leave you with romans 8 uh
15:21
verse 26 and 27 likewise this spirit
15:24
helps us in our weakness for we do not
15:27
know what to pray
15:29
or as we ought to but the spirit himself
15:31
intercedes
15:32
for us with groanings too deep
15:36
forward and he will search his heart
15:38
knows what is the mind
15:40
of the spirit because the spirit and the
15:42
seed
15:43
for the saints according to the will of
15:45
god
15:46
this is how we pray this is how we pray
15:51
we pray by the spirit of god all things
15:54
are possible
15:55
only through the spirit of god so we
15:57
don't
15:58
call things into existence we don't
16:01
command
16:01
sickness or diseases to leave people we
16:04
don't have control over
16:05
any of that it is only through
16:08
faith if god leads you to pray for
16:12
healing
16:13
then you pray for that healing and that
16:14
healing will take place so that god may
16:16
get the glory
16:17
i don't come and i don't say well i have
16:20
the authority to cast something out i
16:22
can't do that i'm not god god is holy
16:25
he's god is in a category
16:29
of him in himself like we are not we
16:31
don't have that power
16:33
but god allows us by using us by
16:36
through his spirit to to accomplish his
16:39
purposes
16:41
so our job is to willingly submit to his
16:44
authority and come and say lord we don't
16:46
know what to pray for how
16:47
we need to pray for this person but we
16:50
believe that
16:51
because your spirit is gracious and
16:53
because your spirit
16:54
will lead us into all the truth we
16:56
believe that we're going to pray
16:58
according to your spirit and we give
16:59
ourselves to the lord
17:00
and he renews our mind so that we can
17:02
pray in accordance with his will
17:05
so we enter the flow of the will of god
17:07
in the sense that
17:08
we position ourselves in a way where we
17:11
can receive his words
17:12
and pray according to his word for that
17:15
person we are praying for
17:16
ourselves basically it's almost like
17:19
uh going to the floor of a river you
17:22
can't go against it
17:23
because it's going to push you but you
17:24
enter into the current and it pushes you
17:27
and basically that's the we can't resist
17:28
the will of god so we have to ask
17:30
god is this what you want me to pray
17:33
and sometimes we don't know so we just
17:35
pray
17:36
and and then just like romans 8 says the
17:39
spirit himself and the seeds for us
17:41
we've grown too deep for word and
17:43
god understand those groans when we
17:45
don't even know what to pray for
17:46
and god uses that and accomplishes his
17:48
purposes
17:50
so i will encourage you not to be to
17:52
lose heart because sometimes we don't
17:53
know what to pray for
17:54
but god is good and you not let us be
17:57
tempted
17:58
or we try beyond our ability you make a
18:01
way of escape so
18:02
when we don't know what to pray for pray
18:04
still and ask god
18:06
to pray with your spirit and pray with
18:07
your mind so that you can be aligned
18:09
with this will
18:10
okay have a wonderful day and i hope to
18:12
see you next time for another study
18:14
thank you
