In this video today, I'm going to give you five tips to help you hit that out there
0:05
the holy grail, the fairway. Let's get stuck into it. Now, hitting fairways starts before we even get club on ball
0:25
and that is all due to how the tees are actually set up
0:29
We're here on the 18th hole at Formby Ladies Golf Club. And if we look at actually where the tees are positioned on this hole
0:36
if I were to stand in the middle and actually draw a line down the centre
0:41
running towards the fairway, they don't point directly to the centre of our fairway
0:47
They're actually pointing out towards the left-hand side. And you'll find that with a lot of tees
0:52
They'll always generally be slightly off from the centre line. So before you even hit a shot, we've got to learn to actually aim appropriately
1:03
So once you've got your club out of your bag that you're going to hit, you want to come in and what you want to actually do is just take a few steps behind
1:11
and just gauge where these tees are actually aiming as we can see there towards the left hand side
1:17
So once your ball is now in the ground, try and actually pick something out in front of your golf ball
1:25
that defines where the middle of the fairway is. So for me, if I just draw a little line up here
1:31
with my golf club, it's actually about 15 degrees off the line
1:37
of where Square is on these tees. So before we do anything
1:42
let's just make sure that we're actually going to be aiming correctly
1:46
so we can start to hit a few more fairways. And that little tip of picking something out in front
1:53
which splits the middle of the fairway will be a great way for you actually to aim correctly and find the fairway
2:00
straight down the middle and if I would have hit that shot aimed on the t I would now be playing from the left rough now the second thing that we want to try and do when we are trying to hit a few more fairways is think about our shot shape
2:23
Unfortunately, we don't all hit it bullet straight. We'll have a little draw, we'll have a little fade
2:28
We might have a big slice, a bit more of a hooky flight. So we actually want to try and allow for this
2:33
And we can do a couple of things as we do this. So number one, let's use the slicer as our example
2:39
because most golfers tend to have a bit of a slice on their ball if i were to get into the middle of
2:45
the tee and i were to aim straight down the middle the likelihood is that i would actually hit the
2:50
right hand side of the fairway or more of the right rough so what we want to try and do number
2:56
one is maybe bring ourselves to the left hand side of the tee as a right-handed golfer because now
3:02
i've actually just brought a bit more fairway into play i would peg up on this side here
3:07
and what I would now do is adjust my aim. Again, thinking of where those tees were aiming
3:14
they might actually be a help to me at this point. But what I'm going to do is say I have a
3:20
let's call it 15-yard slice. I'm going to go to the center of the fairway again
3:26
and I'm actually just going to move 15 yards across, which is just inside the fairway line
3:33
And one top tip I would suggest is don't go excessive with it and don't be aiming over trouble
3:39
If I were to aim here and aim into these bushes expecting more curve, that could bring in some real danger then
3:47
And if you were to just pull it, you're going to be in a serious amount of trouble
3:51
So even if you do have a little slice and it just bounces into the semi, that's not the worst thing ever
3:57
But for us as a little slicer, I'm going to aim just inside the left side of the fairway
4:02
I've gone now to the left side here and with my 15 yard slice if I were to hit this
4:08
what I can do is bring it back towards the middle of the fairway
4:13
cutting down there and it actually just finds center stripe just by allowing myself
4:22
a little bit more leniency and knowing my tendencies sees One other thing that we might do and we all eager to do this is as soon as we get on the tee get the driver out the bag but not the case if we just take a look here this hole the 18th
4:41
254 and 264 in today's conditions with the wind being directly into me this driver that carries
4:50
285 yards that 264 yard 264 yard trap that's going to be in place so it might not always be driver
5:00
pick a club once assessing what the hazards are especially if you're a member at a golf club
5:06
you get drawn into the same club every single time it's the 13th i always hit my driver on the par
5:13
three six i always hit an eight iron take into account what's the wind doing today into off the
5:19
right where are the bunkers how do i feel in myself am i hitting it as good as i normally do
5:26
do i actually feel like i've got that distance in me no if not we need to then pick another club so
5:31
it might be a case that here for me we saw that two six four and actually two four seven was another
5:37
bunker i'm actually going to pick a club here today the two iron that flies two three five
5:43
and into this wind i know will not get the bunker that sits at 247 yards so tip number three make
5:51
sure you don't just pull the driver actually get something out that will take into account the
5:57
hazards out on the golf course and hit a shot that's actually a little bit more strategical
6:03
but if we were hitting the driver a little top tick a sneaky tip that i like to do especially
6:08
when i've got this in i want to try and promote a little bit more backspin if i were to try and
6:13
find more fairways with driver so what i tend to do here if i were to take my normal tee let's say
6:21
my normal tee shot i would have the ball pegged this high where the equator of the ball is sat
6:26
just above the top line there what i'm now going to do is actually peg it down a little bit more
6:32
The reason for this, I'm gonna find a little bit more of the bottom of the driver
6:37
And also it's gonna promote me to hit ever so slightly more neutral or down on it Thus that gonna bring my backspin up which will straighten out the flight I going to lose yardage I might use 10 15 20 yards depending on the strike but what we should see is that back
6:55
spin gets up and my ball flight gets a little bit straighter as I do so this is a top one if you're
7:02
really nervy out on the golf course and there's a fairway that you want to hit it might be the 18th
7:07
you need a good drive to get away peg it down slightly expect a little bit more of a bottom
7:13
strike and hit that spinny driver there that goes straight towards the center of the fairway
7:22
and my final tip this is something that we probably overlook a lot in the game of golf
7:29
considering this is the implement that we want to hit this with we want to try and hit the thing
7:35
out of the middle we forget that we actually have to strike it good we can do all these things
7:42
but yet we focus so much sometimes on where's the out of bounds where's the roof where's the bunker
7:50
oh what am i trying to do with my golf path am i trying to get enough speed should i do what
7:54
bryson says about ground force forget that let's just try and hit the meat of the golf club let's
8:00
get it out of the center so be really aware and it's like hand-eye coordination think of juggling
8:06
when you're juggling you're just thinking about getting the balls in your hand when you think of
8:11
the driver here and hitting the fairway let's think about that right let's put a good strike
8:17
on this and send it towards the fairway i've done all my decision making i'm lined up correctly now
8:24
I just want to focus on getting that ball out of the middle to see
8:31
I can actually get it down the fairway just like that one that's five for five
8:37
do these things and you will start to hit more fairways break it down it's not rocket science
8:43
but if we do the things correctly in the right order you're going to find that this thing is going
8:48
more down the fairway more frequently I hope you're liking the video why not let us know in the
8:53
the comment section below which one of these tips you think is going to help you find the
8:58
most fairways next time you're out on the golf course
