The history behind Alaska's unique panhandle and its borders with Canada

Alaska's panhandle is strange. Well, all panhandles are a little; but theirs is particularly odd given the territorial disconnection between them and the United States. Most people who look at the map would instinctively believe this land should be a part of Canada instead so, why isn't it?
