Wait until at least 10am
0:05
Good morning to you both. I've got about 40 minutes to wait then and I can have my pint, can't I
0:10
You join us now at the Bayhorse pub in York. It's been here since 1540
0:17
You can see the Tudor architecture still here in place, but of course it's another of these pubs across the UK
0:24
that have been hit by increased price rises, energy costs, as well as those changes to business rates next year
0:32
I'm joined now by Lorna Turnbull. She's the landlady. Lorna, just tell us about the struggles that your industry is facing
0:39
So as an industry in general, we've been hit very, very hard
0:43
with the decrease in the national insurance threshold for our employers. On top of that, we're now having to raise minimum wage again
0:53
which means roughly about another 30 pence per hour per member of staff
0:58
On top of that, we're now getting hit with a phenomenal business rate increase
1:03
higher bills, and just to add a bit of insult to injury, alcohol duty will go up
1:09
and eventually that will be passed down by the breweries on to us. And how is it at the moment, you know, how are you finding things
1:16
especially looking ahead to next year? I know Christmas you'll be busier, but what's the outlook for the future
1:21
The outlook for the future and it's bleak, it is bleak, perhaps you know my individual pub personally
1:27
it might not be as affected but there's pubs out there and I assure you the business
1:33
rate will be the icing on the cake for them, the nail in the coffin, whatever phrase you want to use
1:38
we're an industry and we cannot take any more, we are saturated, we give you everything we've got
1:45
and they just want more and more out of us and it's just simply not there, it's just simply not there
