Now, overnight, Charlie Peters has joined veterans in a sleep-out challenge
0:06
raising awareness for military veterans who find themselves without a home. Well, he's joining us live now from Maidstone in Kent
0:14
Morning, Charlie, and what a wonderful cause this is all in aid of. How's the night been
0:21
It was pretty cosy, actually. Not quite as lovely as my usual accommodation
0:25
but actually this trench system behind me did a pretty good job. There are hundreds of us here for the Great Tommy Sleepout
0:32
This is organised by the Royal British Veterans Enterprise Charity, supporting thousands of veterans all around the country
0:39
who are in homelessness crisis or are looking for work. And this is the area we were sleeping in last night
0:45
I just want to take you through a bit of a tour of the trench system because it is quite something, this place
0:50
I didn't realise just how extensive it was, Stephen and Ellie, because you come down this little tunnel here
0:56
as you can see it's a proper mock-up of a first world war charity we've had loads of people staying
1:02
here because they all want to do their bit to replicate that experience this is my lovely bed
1:09
space from last night as you can see i'm sure the two of you had probably a better night's sleep than
1:15
me although you do have to get up pretty early for your gig don't you and then just come around here
1:19
with me this goes on for hundreds of meters it really is quite an extensive system but around
1:26
here i'm joined by two men who've gone a little bit extra when it comes to supporting the great
1:32
toni sleep outs we've got tony and stew gents good morning thank you so much stew and tony and i want
1:39
to start with you tony about an extensive walk you've done for a full week before this sleep out
1:45
talk to me about that yeah we walked from tangmere military aviation museum near chichester down through eastbourne right along the south at the battle of britain memorial and then up to here where we were invited to the Veterans Village and last night to finally do the sleep out of the chairman sleep out
2:00
Brilliant. And, Stu, you've been sleeping out along the way, the whole way, haven't you
2:04
Hundreds of miles accomplished for this walk. Yeah, so we've slept out
2:08
This is our seventh... We've just finished our seventh night sleeping out, so six days on the feet and seven nights sleeping out
2:13
And you went to the village as well in Kent. You were saying this is an area where veterans have found work
2:18
where they're getting training, and it's providing new opportunities. Just how important is the work of the RBVA
2:23
It's fantastic. It gets those who have been unfortunate to fall in harder times
2:27
and require a little bit of help. The money we raise goes to getting those women back on their feet, really
2:33
So it's vital that we raise funds for them. And, Stu, what was it like doing this with your old mucker, Tony
2:39
Because you guys served together in the RAF. You had a career together. What was this experience like going through this together again
2:45
Yeah, I mean, we've known each other for about 19 years now and we've been doing the walking for three to three of those years
2:51
and it's just, yeah, it's great. It was a good catch-up, it's a good week away and we just reminisce and plod on and do the thing that we do
2:59
As Tony said, it's a really viable thing we're doing to raise awareness and funds, so that's the other driving force behind it
3:04
and it's just good to be doing something with somebody like Tony. And last night, Tony, sitting around a campfire
3:09
well over 100 people here, it does replicate, doesn't it, that sense of the camaraderie in the military
3:15
these sorts of events. Yeah, and the charity have done a really great job down here and to use that little bit of sort of home time, if you like
3:23
when everybody gets round the fire and chats about their day, it's massive and it gets everybody together
3:28
A real privileged part of this. Thank you to both of you. And thanks also to the GB News viewers and listeners
3:34
because last night when we were covering the RBVE, we'd just been told by the charity that hundreds of you went online
3:40
and donated the Search Inc for a £3 million gold this year
3:44
GB News, viewers and listeners have certainly done their bit to contribute to that this year
