I will show on day release from the Stormtrooper factory
0:04
in Drusillis Park in the south of England. And can you guess who I'm here to see
0:10
No, it's not this old grey grizzly chap. In fact, regular viewers of the show will know
0:16
that I am Britain's biggest beaver lover. And it turns out I'm not the only one
0:22
Yes, a new rewilding campaign has been launched and up and down the country, people are coming out to support it
0:29
so I'm here to find out more. Mark, are you the beaver expert here at Drusillis
0:51
I guess I could be. I'm the zoo manager, So I'm the most senior figure in the zoo
1:00
I've been working in zoos for over 34 years. So my responsibility is the management and the welfare of the plus 800 900 animals that we have in the park
1:18
All right, well, that's a lot of animals, but tell me, please, about your beaver
1:23
So the beavers are particularly special. We have had beavers in the collection for 35, 40 plus years
1:31
They're hugely popular with our visitors. They're hugely popular within our industry
1:37
Professionals alike like to come to Drusilla's to see the beavers. Very exciting. Well, thank you so much for that
1:44
Thank you. Thanks a lot. Andy, you know me as a beaver lover, but there are some beaver haters out there
2:01
There are some sceptics about rewilding. That's right and what we know is that conservation where it is divisive won't work
2:08
We need communities behind it and that goes from stopping poachers in Africa, from poaching rhino horns
2:15
to reintroduction projects here in the UK. We need a community behind it and that why it so important that places like Drusillis Park here are engaging and educating people communities about why it is so important that we have that wildlife So Andy what can the great British public and the viewers at home do to support your campaign
2:37
Well, people are already supporting it by visiting fantastic zoos that are involved in these projects
2:43
Zoos like Drusillis Park here are part of an amazing community of conservation zoos
2:49
So Kai, why do you love beavers so much? Well, I actually see a lot of myself in the beaver
2:55
You see yourself in the beaver? I see a lot of myself in the beaver. You know, they can have a lazy day sometimes
3:01
but to the wider public, they're much loved and a very industrious animal
3:07
So Andy, as you know, I'm very partial to a furry beaver
3:12
on a Saturday night, but why is it that the great British public
3:15
should care so much about beavers? Well, beavers are an incredible ecosystem engineer
3:21
So what they do is when we get them out in the habitat, they transform those places and make pools and places for other animals to live
3:30
like fish and amphibians and the birds that feed on them. So they having an amazing effect where they being reintroduced across Britain And they been extinct in Britain for hundreds of years And they really a rewarding success story So Kai how close have
3:45
you gotten to a beaver before? Well, the viewers of the Saturday Five on GB News do know me as a
3:51
beaver expert. I love to talk about beavers. I do it all the time. But in truth, I haven't got that
3:59
up close and personal with a beaver. And so, to be honest, this is the best day of the year
4:06
We're making dreams come true. Absolutely. Hello. Right. Let's see if he comes on over
4:16
I don't know. This is amazing
