Here you can talk about anything, it's such a relief
0:03
You know, anywhere else you go, you feel like you're trying to put across ideas or facts, actually
0:10
that a lot of people are hostile to. And so it's nice to be amongst people that allow you to say things
0:18
that even if they disagree with them, you know you're not going to destroy them
0:22
and they're not going to hate you. There's so many, I'm shocked by how many people are here, certainly open
0:28
And I think it's sort of changed a little bit because I think people were really not conforming to left-right
0:36
kind of silos anymore. I think it's kind of opened up a little bit
0:40
Because I see that there are lots of stands here about things I might not necessarily agree with but
0:44
it's I think it's important to keep your mind open and to hear what other people have to say and why they think that
0:51
So is this your first time with a bottle of ideas? And now this is my second time
0:55
I was here last year. So, yeah, my second time back. I had a great time last year
0:58
So, I'm back with them all. What were you expecting last year
1:02
And how was it different? I think last year I was just looking for a space to be able to really challenge myself
1:09
in terms of you know debating different topics that just don get talked about It really nice this year There so many more younger people So that sort of why I came last year is to meet some of my own age to talk about things that I can do for my social circles
1:26
because you never know who you're going to upset or how they're going to react or whatever
1:30
It's important we have different ideas. Diversity of thought is really important
1:34
But people are frightened now to actually speak out and share what they think
1:40
And if you don't agree, that's fine, you can agree to disagree. And we've got to learn to do that again
1:45
We've got to find a way back from this polarisation that we found ourselves in
1:50
this us-and-them kind of society that we've ended up with, and we can see what the effects are of that
1:55
So we need to somehow pull together to get back to that respectful disagreement
2:01
And this is where some of this leads start. What I like about it is it's no way an echo chamber
2:07
There's so many different viewpoints and it's just a pity you can't get to everything
2:14
because there's so much on but it's such a great institution basically
2:19
Yeah I love it. Especially with the online world that we live in people only know how to debate online and
2:24
having these discussions in person and kind of practicing the skill of debating and even
2:28
arguing for positions that you don't necessarily agree with is so important and it's a skill
2:33
that we've completely lost
