That's why they really want us to do three things. Book train travel before cruises, during cruises, book trains as excursions

here. First, one of the most amazing experiences I've had is taking the train from Anchorage to

join a princess cruise sailing out of Whittier. It's called the Glacier Discovery Route. It takes

about two and a half hours and pulls up right outside where the ship docks in Wittier. They whisked away

It was a beautiful experience weaving its way through the Alaskan landscape, giving me an

incredible insight into the country and it's absolutely stunning beauty because it's weaving

its way to the ship through just a remarkable scenery. It's also incredibly convenient because

Anchorage is 60 miles from Whittier. It's really, really hard to find a taxi or car transfer

and it's way more exciting and much more scenic than the coach ride

Next, you may be surprised to hear that both Holland America and Princess Cruises operate

the largest fleet of Dome Railway cars in Alaska, including what's known as the McKinley

Explorer. They use these trains as part of their land and cruise packages, and they transport

cruise passages from Whittier and Anchorage to the wildlife lodges that they own in Denali

National Park and in Fairbanks. Their cruises travel on these beautiful glass dome trains that

weave their way, travel through dramatic Alaskan landscapes. It has breakfast, they have lunch, they have cocktails, because the train trip takes between

nine and ten hours. They have guides on board, giving commentary, explaining the sites, the wildlife, and the

Mountaineer, as the name suggests, travels through the Rocky Mountains on what feels like

an absolutely impossible to have built railway line due to the height and the terrain. The most popular

route and the one that I did runs between Banff and Vancouver and it's called the first passage to the west. The trip is two days on the train

and one overnight off the train in a place called Cam Loops. The train has two classes

And that's why the cruise lines really want you to do a train trip, a lodge day and a cruise to truly see it and why many of them own them

But what about other parts of the world are cruise and train pre- and post trips as intertwined

trains, again, both of which I've done. The Indian Pacific train is the most link because it travels

between Perth, which is close to the cruise port of Fremantle and Sydney, of course, another key cruise

Now the GAN also takes three nights and four days. It travels 2,917 kilometers, 1,815 miles between

Darwin and Adelaide. It travels to the great outback or the so-called red center. I did this train

before joining Queen Mary 2. There were off-train excursions in Catherine and the famous Alice Springs where I got to visit

things like the home of the Flying Doctors. In Europe and UK, there are some links to cruising trains, while not as significant

Some river cruise lines use the Euristar to whisk cruises to him from the UK under the English

It really is quite a magical experience. A similarly famous train is the Belmont British Pullman, which I've also been on and does a very similar thing to the Northern Bell

Now, both of those are more like going on an excursion, which brings me to the surprisingly large

There are, my view, four that you should look out for and absolutely consider

The first is in Skagway, Alaska, the White Pass and Yukon Train, which is actually owned

It started construction in 1898 when the Klondike gold rush began and the aim was to make it easier to get to the goldfields over this really huge dangerous treacherous white past

Now the train itself stopped operating in 1982. It was revived as a heritage railway train years later and eventually Carnival Corporation bought it

The trains actually now run right to the side of cruise ships and they'll take you on a 20 kilometre 30 mile each way

And this is known as the end of the world train. It goes from a Shire through the Tierra del Fuego National Park

This is a rail line with an extremely narrow gauge and very narrow carriages, and it follows

the route of a convict train that ran from 1910. to 1947, which took them out daily to collect wood. It has an incredible history. And as I

chugged along, as well as the stunning scenery, waterfalls, forest and rivers, I saw the famous

wild horses. It also stops, by the way, partway at a station which have kind of local crafts

on sale. Another perhaps more accessible for most cruisers is a train excursion is in the

Caribbean. And this is the Sint Kitts scenic train. This is a three-hour train ride that
