Just how different is a European River cruise and a Mekong River cruise through Vietnam and Cambodia? I take a look at the key similarities and differences and the things that surprised me as I had expected them to be very different but were not. A Europe river cruise and Mekong river cruise are great travel and cruising experiences and this will help you understand what to expect from both.

what are the similarities and
0:01
differences between a european river
0:04
cruise and a mekong river cruise i'm
0:07
gary beverage this is another of matt
0:09
cruising tips of terrorists i'm
0:10
currently cruising on board across
0:12
europe indogene
0:13
- down the mekong and i want to share
0:16
with you things that struck me that are
0:18
the same and different from going on a
0:20
european river cruise starting with this
0:23
one the first key difference is the
0:26
ships themselves they certainly look
0:28
very different and they are usually much
0:30
smaller so the indogene - for example
0:32
has 31 cabins 62 guests whereas if you
0:37
go on a European River cruise you would
0:38
normally expect the river boats there to
0:40
hold between 150 and 200 passages so the
0:43
ships are definitely much smaller they
0:45
certainly look very different from the
0:47
outside they tend to be much taller
0:49
because they're not constrained by the
0:50
bridges in Europe and of course by
0:52
definition because they're smaller there
0:54
are shorter the other key differences
0:55
they look very different so the river
0:58
cruise ships in the mekong tend to have
1:00
a sort of a colonial style and look to
1:03
them from the outset so they do look
1:04
very different however where there are
1:07
similar is once you are inside so though
1:09
the de corps is different again often
1:11
harking back to that colonial look and
1:14
feel like other river cruise ships in
1:16
europe the facilities are very similar
1:18
and of course relatively limited because
1:20
of the size of ships so for example on
1:22
an indogene - we had a sun deck here it
1:25
actually had a plunge pool for some row
1:27
boats in europe have those as well lots
1:30
of plate space to sit outside there was
1:32
a key lounge which has a bar which is
1:34
where you have your briefings and that's
1:36
real sort of social heart of the ship
1:39
you then have a restaurant which is open
1:42
sea to dining open three times a day
1:44
breakfast lunch and dinner
1:45
it had a massage room on board this ship
1:48
of course some ships in Europe will have
1:50
a fitness center or a similar kind of
1:53
facility so you'll find once you're
1:55
inside the ship's are pretty similar in
1:57
terms of the range of facilities but
1:58
they certainly look very different and
2:00
are much smaller another area where
2:03
there are pretty similar is when it
2:04
comes to fares river cruising generally
2:06
is pretty all-inclusive and the mekong
2:09
river cruises are similar to the
2:11
european
2:13
in that respect so for example they
2:14
include you accommodations as you would
2:16
expect they include all your meals so
2:19
breakfast for example on indogene 2 was
2:22
a buffet breakfast lunch was buffet
2:24
lunch alone had a cooking station as
2:25
well dinner was a full served meal would
2:27
start soup main course choice of a meat
2:31
dish a chicken dish vegetable dish and a
2:34
dessert 24-hour tea and coffee was all
2:37
included that was self-serve Wi-Fi of
2:40
course being on the rivers like in
2:41
Europe it was a little bit more erratic
2:43
but it was included in the fares all
2:45
excursions are included so it everywhere
2:47
you stopped it was an excursion included
2:49
the key exclusions were gratuities which
2:51
of course are optional if you have
2:53
something like a massage by something a
2:54
little shop onboard and then of course
2:56
drinks if you had those extra drinks at
2:59
mealtime or at other times throughout
3:02
the cruise so very very similar to river
3:04
cruising you know where your large you
3:05
find all in Therese Affairs we're
3:07
depending on the cruise line slight
3:08
variances and differences between how
3:09
much drink is or isn't included
3:12
exclusions would be things like air
3:14
fares as well and transfers of course
3:17
you can bundle those together the same
3:18
as you can do with European at river
3:20
cruising so the fares are pretty similar
3:22
they're structured similar when I look
3:24
at the price of going on a cruise in
3:27
Europe per day and look at the price of
3:30
going on the mekong per day their prices
3:32
were relatively similar of course the
3:33
big real difference is you have the
3:36
flight to Asia which of course if you're
3:39
coming to a European River cruise from
3:40
the US you have that flight cost anyway
3:42
of a long-haul flight the next area is
3:44
one that I perhaps hadn't really
3:45
expected to be quite a similar that was
3:48
incredibly similar and that's the basic
3:50
format of the cruise that may make sense
3:53
of course because the format may work no
3:55
matter where you are in the world if
3:57
you're on a river cruise so you'll
3:59
normally have in the evening before you
4:00
get to a portal of some sort of port
4:02
briefing you might have after dinner
4:04
some informal entertainment which might
4:06
just be a film perhaps a dance troupe or
4:08
musical group come on board morning
4:10
you'll have some sort of announcement
4:11
you'll have breakfast you then will head
4:13
off on an excursion which is included
4:15
you know we hear back for lunch you
4:16
either be cruising in the afternoon
4:17
you're going another excursion and
4:19
you'll normally also be docking or
4:21
mooring somewhere in the evenings so
4:24
very very very similar
4:26
process it's relatively structured like
4:28
river crew see in Europe so the day is
4:29
pretty laid out so you look at the daily
4:31
program there's not lots of choices of
4:32
options things to do everyone does the
4:34
same thing at the same time and it's
4:36
pretty structured as per in Europe so
4:39
the format very similar one of the key
4:41
differences though was what you find in
4:43
Europe is the ships normally will cruise
4:46
along and more to clean in the evenings
4:49
they'll often be moored in one of the
4:51
towns right up in the towns you can walk
4:53
off in the evening and go out what I
4:54
found on the Mekong is most of the
4:56
evenings we would stop setting at some
4:58
point of time and would be moored in the
5:00
middle of the river rather than actually
5:02
in a local village or town and the only
5:04
places that we mowed were in the big
5:06
cities like norm Penn for example
5:08
so overall the format in the structure
5:10
is very very similar between the two the
5:13
next thing I want to talk about is
5:15
excursions as I mentioned it's quite
5:17
normal for both european river cruises
5:19
amir khan river cruises to have
5:21
excursions included but what i found
5:23
though is actually what the excursions
5:25
focus on is surprisingly similar
5:27
obviously what you're seeing is very
5:28
different and they're probably four key
5:30
things that I observed that on both the
5:33
European river cruise and on the Mekong
5:35
that you likely to go and see the first
5:37
of those is you're going to go and see
5:38
the iconic sights in major cities the
5:40
same as you would do with you in Europe
5:42
or you hear on the Mekong so in Ho Chi
5:44
Minh City and in Phnom Penh you gonna
5:46
head off and see all the key sites in Ho
5:48
Chi Minh City you're gonna go and see
5:50
things like the Town Hall the Opera
5:53
House the Noctor dom the old post office
5:57
in Phnom Penh you're gonna go to see the
5:58
Royal Palace this love a goad so all of
6:01
those big classic sights in the big
6:02
cities you gotta go and see the same as
6:04
you would do in Europe so that's one key
6:06
thing called the big cities and the
6:07
iconic sights the second group of
6:10
excursions are once you head out into
6:12
the smaller towns or villages where
6:14
these excursions tend to focus much more
6:16
on how people live so you might go to
6:18
farms you might go to handicrafts
6:21
produce markets and you get a slice of
6:24
how people live so on the Mekong for
6:26
example went to lots of local markets
6:28
we're going to see lots of craftspeople
6:30
making pottery or honey products or wood
6:33
carving or palm sugar and the same on
6:37
excursions when you're in Europe
6:39
into various farms or you go to home
6:40
visits or you again you go to factories
6:43
where people make handicrafts so
6:45
certainly when you into the smaller
6:46
villages it's very much focused around
6:48
the culture and how people live the
6:51
third type of excursion are going to
6:53
historically significant places so in
6:55
Europe you'll go to all the places where
6:57
big major historical events have
6:59
happened in that particular country in
7:01
that particular place the same is true
7:03
in the Mekong so we went to for example
7:05
in Ho Chi Minh you likely to go to the
7:06
Gucci tunnels which is where the Viet
7:09
Cong operated just outside of Ho Chi
7:11
Minh City during the Vietnam War so
7:14
you're going to explore those and learn
7:15
more about the Vietnamese war in
7:17
Cambodia in Phnom Penh you'll go to
7:19
prison s-21 section 21 which was an old
7:23
secondary school to converted into a
7:25
torture Center where people were in
7:26
prison they were tortured and eventually
7:29
sent off to the killing fields and again
7:32
you'll learn all about Cambodian history
7:34
so again a common theme that I found
7:36
across the two is visiting really
7:38
important historical sites the fourth
7:40
area is whether you're in Europe or
7:42
whether you're in on the Mekong you're
7:45
going to go and visit a lot of religious
7:46
centers so obviously in Europe you go
7:48
and visit cathedrals and big churches
7:49
what you do on the Mekong is you go and
7:52
visit temples or as they call them here
7:54
pagodas and we went to see some amazing
7:56
and beautiful pagodas and temples my
7:59
favorite probably was the Tay and pagoda
8:01
in charaka in Vietnam which had these
8:04
incredibly intricate statues there was
8:07
the wacked Kampong trochlea where we
8:10
went to on ox carts very old pagoda
8:13
built in the late 18-hundreds
8:15
and then we also went to of course
8:17
Angkor Wat which is the big famous world
8:20
heritage site with incredibly beautiful
8:24
and amazing temples now of course ruins
8:26
another area that is actually I think
8:29
quite different is around how busy
8:32
things are if you head down the rivers
8:34
in Europe they are incredibly busy
8:36
particularly the Rhine and the Danube
8:37
and often you'll see loads of ships
8:39
sailing bar past you as you can head up
8:42
and down and often when you're docking
8:44
in many of the key places the ships are
8:46
often dr. next to each other and backed
8:49
up so lots of people lots of tours out
8:51
in town sitting on the Mekong that's
8:53
very very different we did see one or
8:55
two other ships along the way but for
8:57
most the time we felt like we were the
8:59
only passenger ship on the mekong so you
9:03
don't when you get off at different
9:06
stops see loads of other tall parties
9:08
the only time that we saw more tour
9:10
parties were for example in Phnom Penh
9:12
because many of the cruisers will say
9:15
more than one night so there's more of a
9:16
chance to see people so definitely it
9:19
feels much much quieter on the river and
9:21
it feels a little bit more special a
9:23
little bit more unique another key area
9:25
which i think is broadly similar is the
9:27
passengers so the passenger mix on the
9:29
mekong does seem to be a very similar
9:31
passenger mix to those on european river
9:33
cruises so it does tend to be a little
9:34
bit older you have people your 50s 60s
9:36
70s lots of couples traveling together
9:39
the ships are it designed for a couples
9:41
experience I actually came on this as a
9:43
solo passenger and I was the only seller
9:45
passenger onboard as mostly couples of
9:47
course there's some extended groups and
9:48
sometimes bigger groups of people who
9:50
were traveling together I guess through
9:52
a travel organization or or a group so
9:55
very much the same sort of passenger
9:57
again quite a diverse mix being on
9:59
across Europe it tends to have a much
10:01
more European focused passenger mix so
10:04
there was French there was some Spanish
10:06
there was english-speaking people mostly
10:09
from the UK there's some Japanese
10:11
English speaking of course was here
10:13
another cruise you're gonna find this
10:14
perhaps more Americans Canadians and
10:16
Australians it's a very very similar mix
10:19
to European river cruising a river
10:22
cruising Europe a real cruising the
10:23
Mekong both are incredibly experiences
10:25
for different reasons I loved my time on
10:28
the Mekong and it was quite surprised
10:30
because I hadn't expected quite so many
10:31
similarities to the way that European
10:34
river cruises run and the way that the
10:35
Mekong River cruise runs hope you found
10:38
that interesting and helpful I have
10:39
loads more videos about river cruising
10:41
mekong river cruising ocean cruising so
10:43
why don't you watch another one of those
10:44
