Hey there fellow hungry travelers, Mark here with Walter's World and today we're here in Paris
0:04
Today we're going to talk about are the snacks that you need to have when you come to France
0:08
I'm going to start off with probably the easiest, best, go-to snack you can get anywhere in France
0:12
No matter if you're hopping on a train, you're walking around town, you just need something to eat, it's right here in my handy
0:17
It's a baguette. Just getting a plain baguette will take care of you because it's fantastic
0:21
The bread and the bakeries here are great everywhere. But if you want to really get a good time with your baguette, get some stuff inside
0:27
Whether you want ham and butter on your baguette, or you want ham and cheese on your baguette, or ham, cheese, ham, butter on your baguette, you can't go wrong with this
0:34
This is the most important snack to have that you'll see people getting all the time
0:38
So grab one. Those bakeries, they won't let you down. Another couple of great snacks you want to get when you head up to the bakery
0:44
One, a croissant. I mean, you're here in France. You have to have croissants when you're here
0:48
Obviously, for breakfast, that's when they're best. But anytime you can grab one, it's going to be good
0:52
or maybe get a pan au chocolat, which is basically a croissant with chocolate inside, which is
0:57
wonderful. Or if you think, well, Mark, I want to be healthier, put a healthy interior in there
1:03
Maybe you're going to get it with raisins in there. Oh yeah, there's lots of really great
1:06
bakery goods you can get for snacks, but those are ones you can grab and go at a bakery. What
1:10
about some things when we sit down? Let's check those out. Now, baked goods are fantastic and
1:15
there's a lot of other really great baked goods you want to have before we go sit down at the cafe and grab something. And I think it's really important to mention brioche. And brioche is a
1:23
sweet bread and it's wonderful. And here in Lyon, you have my personal favorite brioche you can get
1:29
It's brioche with the pink pralines in it. Like they smush up the pralines. It's basically
1:33
caramelized almonds and then they smush it together with the dough and they bake it up
1:37
It's just, it's incredible. It makes a great snack and it's super sweet and tasty. So
1:42
why would you pass up on that? But the thing is, if you need a snack, go into those bakeries
1:47
the boulangerie, the patisserie, wherever you want to go, you have all kinds of little tarts you can get as well
1:51
You know, you get your tart tartan, which is basically an upside down apple tart, which is really good
1:56
You can get, you know, Justin likes a tart au citron, which is a lemon tart. I personally like a pear tart, which you can do that
2:02
But all those tarts make really good quick bites that you can grab and eat
2:05
So sitting at a park bench, really, really great things out there. Of course, if you've ever seen the choux pastries, a little dough, a little ball of dough cooked up
2:13
and sometimes they fill it with tasty things you can do that as well But there a lot of really great baked goods bakery goods you can get when you do come here to france and if you you know here in lyon and in other places you hit up a cafe sometimes you just want to stop and have a quick bite to eat a quick snack probably the the biggest
2:29
quick snack in france outside of those baguettes and the sandwiches obviously you can do sandwiches
2:34
are a version of a sandwich the croque or the croque monsieur there's lots of different croques
2:40
out there i know you're probably laughing right now but the croque monsieur basically it is the
2:43
French toasted ham and cheese sandwich because literally it's a toasted ham and cheese sandwich
2:48
but then they have cheese on the top at the end or maybe like a bechamel kind of sauce on the top
2:52
there you might eat with a fork and knife sometimes when you walk around they'll actually just have it
2:56
so you can just eat it in like a napkin and have that but that's really good or you can get a
3:00
croque madame which is basically a croque masseur but they put an egg on top of it that can be good
3:05
and if you're speaking about eggs I mean just getting an omelette here in France is fantastic
3:09
and it's quick because sometimes these snacks are just having a quick bite to eat to sit down
3:13
at a cafe or something so anytime you get an omelet you'll be fine there whatever they put in it
3:18
you'll be good to go okay i guarantee that but for me when i think of eggs in france i think of the
3:24
quiches they have so many fantastic quiches you can get here just get a slice of quiche will get
3:29
you through sometimes i'm like just little quiches like this size that you can get and just bite and grab and go and do that and i know for me my favorite quiche is quiche lorraine like this
3:38
is the probably the most famous quiche that's out there you probably can get it your local grocery store back home it's just basically like you know the egg and bacon inside and it's just the cream
3:47
when it was well of course it's just so good so filling and so tasty you can't go wrong i know
3:52
some people like some of the vegetable uh quiches you can get those too but for me quiche rain every
3:57
day all day thank you very much i remember back when i didn't come to france as i do now um i
4:03
would be so excited because the first thing i would eat every time i come to france when i get a quiche and i'd see it like at the airport i'm like i don't care i'm gonna get that one there i want it now
4:09
Like, it was so good. So you have that. Other things you might get at the cafe, you can get a tatin, which is basically just an open-faced sandwich
4:18
A lot of different varieties of open-faced sandwiches. You can do that. I think for my kids, though, if they think about snack time in France, their favorite snack here are the crepes
4:27
Ah, yes. Just walking down the street and see the little creperie or the little guy making the crepes out there
4:32
And just putting some Nutella in there. Fold it up. Here you go, guys. You can go wrong That actually Liam go it is every time we go to France He has to get his crepe with Nutella First thing most important thing but you can do that There a lot of different other fillings and if you go to a creperie you can get the sweet crepes and sometimes they put
4:48
you know, savory things in there too, or you can get what's called a galette, and a galette is
4:51
basically a crepe made with buckwheat, so it's a little bit different flavor of the pancake kind of
4:57
thing, but still really good, okay? I recommend that too, especially if you don't want sweet stuff
5:01
you want something a little more hearty that might work for you. Another thing that might look like
5:05
a crepe or a pizza is what we call a tat flambe, which is basically a flatbread and they'll put
5:10
creme fraiche on it and onion and bacon. It's very popular in the Alsace region of the country
5:16
In German, it's called flamkuchen, but tat flambe here in France. And that's one of those things I
5:21
think I need to mention. There's a lot of regional snacks when you are here in France that you can
5:26
try. So make sure wherever you're going, ask them, hey, what's a snack I should have like in this
5:31
city, you know, in this town? Because you might find out about tat flambe when you're in Strasbourg
5:35
or the cannelle because these cannelle are basically like caramelized pastry with kind of
5:39
a custardy inside and make sure if you're going to get them uh make sure if you're going to get
5:44
it for your kids make sure i need one for the kids that i need one for you because sometimes
5:49
it might have a little alcohol in there too but it is wonderful if you're in bordeaux you got to
5:53
get a cannelle okay it's a must um another really popular sweet snack and honestly we've actually
5:58
done classes learned how to make these is macarons which is basically it's the french oreo i know
6:03
that sounds horrible to call it that way, but it's the little sandwich thing you see. And basically what it is, is an almond meringue cookie on both sides
6:10
They put jam or some ganache in the middle and you make your little like French Oreo kind of thing
6:14
My personal favorite are the pistachio ones or the raspberry ones. That's my go-to, but there's lots of really nice ones out there
6:20
Another kind of cake, cookie kind of thing are Madeline's. And Madeline's, basically what they are, is they look like a shell
6:27
Or sometimes you might think they look like a UFO. but basically what it is if you open it up it's kind of like a pound cake e kind of flavor and
6:36
tend like um viscosity no in terms of like how it feels in your hands when you bite into it
6:43
that's actually when we were in normandy all the geats we stayed at every day they brought us fresh
6:47
metal lines here you go and so that's a nice little thing you can get and you get that at grocery stores you can get that at bakeries all kinds of stuff pretty much throughout the country
6:54
it really good um another thing is if you thinking about just getting snacks honestly just Just going by the fruit stands or the cheese stands and grabbing some fruit or grabbing some cheese you can always do that as a snack As the French will tell you cheese can be a snack
7:08
It could be a meal. It could be a dessert. It could be anything because it's cheese. And we're in France
7:12
And there's so many. So that could be something you can enjoy. Also, I think for some of us, it's like, Mark, I need something a little bit warmer
7:19
I need something to get my tummy filled up and warm up inside because I'm here in the wintertime
7:24
Give me some warm stuff. Well, one thing is the, you know, the French onion soup, right
7:29
I mean, come on, you're in France. French onion soup is a go-to. Also, it's usually pretty quick for them to make, and it's usually a starter on most menus
7:35
So you can get it all over the country, quick, nice, hearty
7:39
Like, you know, it's mostly the broth, and then you have some of the onions in there, but the bread and the cheese on top that gets, you know, burned on there, flambéed or whatever
7:47
And it's just like, oh, it's so good, and that can be something that's there. For as much as people talk about German mustard and stuff, French mustards are way better
7:54
because you've got so much flavor. You can have so much heat, but it's always really tasty
7:58
So if you get the French mustard, make sure you're using it on your sausage or whatever you have
8:02
because it's good. And sometimes it burns a bit too. Then, of course, there's the mark
8:07
You know what? I've been drinking. I need like a late night snack. I need something that's going to make me feel like I can go to bed now
8:15
And of course, just like everywhere else in Europe, you have the kebabs that are here. And if you're not sure what a kebab is
8:19
think of like pita bread or Turkish bread, basically like cut in the middle open and they put the the shaved meat in there and it can be
8:27
different like you can have it with like i've seen you know with chicken or beef or lamb or whatever
8:32
like there's different meats they put in there and then lettuce tomato onion and then there's always
8:35
lots of sauce in there but what i like here in france a lot of times they'll put french fries
8:39
in it as well fold it up eat it up and you'll forget how many picone you had that night take
8:45
my word for it but i'll be honest with you the thing is there's so many great snacks you can get
8:49
get when you're here. I know the quiche l'oray was my all-time favorite, but I found a new favorite
8:53
when I'm here, is here in Lyon when I had the brioche, the pink pralines in it. That's what I
8:58
gotta say, is look for those snacks, try them out, because honestly, breakfast here in France isn't
9:03
much, so maybe you just have a snack for breakfast, and then you're ready for the other meals the rest of the day. Anyway, let us know what your favorite snacks are here in France, because we'd love to try
9:10
them. Believe me, I promise I will try them out on my next visit to France. Anyway, I wish y'all
9:15
the best I'll say au revoir from here in Lyon, France. Oh, and in Paris where we started
