I mean with all the food that's here, le petit glutton, I just love that. I just
0:07
you feel like this when you're here because you really feel like a small gluttonous person that
0:12
just is enjoying the food here in Lyon. Hey there fellow hungry travelers, Mark here with Walters
0:16
World and today we're here in Lyon, France. Today we're going to talk about what you should eat when you come here to Lyon, but I gotta tell you this, don't worry what you eat, it will be fantastic
0:25
when you're here in Lyon because they, as everyone will tell you, this is the gastronomical capital
0:29
of friends. Honestly, it's just a fantastic place to eat and literally all the restaurants from the
0:34
local Bouchons to normal restaurants, the bistros, everything, oh my goodness, you will eat well. If
0:38
you don't eat well when you're here, I don't know how it happened, all right? But I want to tell you
0:42
when you do come here to Lyon, there are some things you need to realize and one is they have
0:47
these things called Bouchons. And Bouchons is a local restaurant that specializes in Lyonnaise
0:52
cuisine, but really hearty, rich, like oh my gosh I'm going to explode after I eat there, no matter
0:58
or when I eat there kind of stuff. And I will tell you, when you go, they're usually a little bit smaller
1:04
so you don't have a ton of space. So you might want to reserve a spot so you make sure you can get them
1:08
Or go during the lunch hour, and there's maybe a few less people there to give you a chance, but the bouchon is a must
1:13
And when you go to these bouchons, you'll notice there's not a ton of them around. There's a lot of old, old leon, you can find them there
1:19
But they really are truly hearty foods. And I will tell you, when you go there, you will not want to eat the rest of the day
1:27
So kind of plan around that if you're going to do it for lunch, know that dinner is going to be small. If you're going to go to for dinner, it's don't even bother having lunch
1:33
OK, and so I want to say when you're looking for Bouchon, don't think it's just in Voulion. There's other ones out there
1:38
This one's normal shopping area. Fantastic people, super friendly, super fantastic food
1:43
But you will find them throughout. And I want to tell you when you are here, if you're not sure what to order, just ask them
1:48
I have found the Lyonnais waiters and bartenders, everybody have been super helpful to help me pick the right thing that's truly from here
1:57
So I just want to say merci to all the fantastic people here in Lyon to help me enjoy the city
2:01
But honestly, if you're coming here to eat, that's one thing to know. You can find them all over
2:05
They will get busy. They will be a little tight, okay, for some of the seating stuff
2:09
So be aware of that. But if you don't get a reservation, just go when they kind of open up and they'll have spots available
2:14
And you will eat well in them, all right? When you go there, there's a lot of, like, really traditional Lyonnaise food you can have
2:20
Probably one you're going to see, and you'll see this, not just the Bouchons, but all over the place, is the Salade Lyonnaise, which is the Lyonese salad, right
2:27
And this is when you think, oh, Mark, it's a salad. It's going to be a veggie thing. I'll just have that as a starter
2:31
And they'll have it as a starter for you. But what you have to realize, it's lettuce and, like, an entire side of bacon
2:37
Oh, so good. And then there's some tomatoes in there and a fantastically soft poached egg
2:43
And then they have this Dijon mustard dressing that you can put on
2:47
Oh, my God. It is so good. Like, you can actually have that as a meal
2:50
So maybe you want to do that for a light like starter or a light meal before you have a big bouchon meal later on You can do that But that a really kind of typical thing from here and you also see lyonnais like rosette de lyon which is actually the local sausage here that you have it sliced up so if you like your charcuterie board
3:06
that's gonna be one of those things you might actually see it at home but that's another thing you could get this from here but probably the most famous thing that i see a lot of the tourists the
3:14
french tourists come here to eat are quenelle and i'm gonna tell you right now i mispronounce all
3:18
the words because my French sucks and that's okay. That's why I spell them down below. But
3:22
Quenelle, what it is, is basically a big fish croquette. Okay, they might have, it probably has
3:26
pike in it to make it, but it can be with other, other meats and stuff. But traditionally, you're
3:31
gonna have it with fish. So it's this fish croquette. And you can serve it in different ways. The one I had actually, it came in lobster bisque. So heavy with the bisque, but so wonderful when you ate it
3:42
It was just this incredible mix of like the the like Bredding almost the croquette with the fish in it. I mean, it was just really really wonderful
3:50
So that's something you can have now if you want to get something like us another kind of startery thing
3:54
or just want to stick with your cheeses kind of stuff You can have the serville de canute which I know I'm butchering
4:00
But canute is the name of the silk workers that are here and this was basically a cheese dip
4:04
So it's got this light white creamy white cheese and garlic herbs in it And you'll smear it on your bread or dip your bread in it, but it's
4:09
it's really good it's one of those things you might not want to go smoochy smoochy afterwards
4:14
because it'd be quite potent like i'm missing people weren't kissing the silk workers too much
4:18
but it is one thing you're really going to like and i think another thing you want to have
4:21
when i think about the cheese when you're here is the saint mazarin cheese it's a very soft cheese
4:27
you can buy in the store and have it there they'll have it at restaurants sometimes they'll kind of
4:31
wrap it up and fry it and i will warn you once you bite into it it'll like just melt right away
4:35
and like, stay in your shirt. Just take my word for it, okay? But that St. Musseline cheese
4:39
is really a traditional cheese from around here. All right, I know I was saying about all that hearty food
4:44
but you're like, Mark, a salad and some cheese and some little meats. Come on, give us some really good stuff
4:48
I'm going to tell you, you can eat fantastic local food or food from all over France when you are here
4:53
One thing I saw is the poulet de braise, which is basically chicken served into morel mushroom sauce
5:00
So good if you can find that one. That's a good one you can find. Petit saleh is basically, if you want lentils
5:04
cooked with some veggies and sausages and some of that bacon I talk about. You have that. If you're
5:08
looking for something a little bit different, not as heavy, that could be an option. But a chicken
5:13
dish that you should really try, probably the top chicken dish on here, is the poulet celestine. And
5:17
what it is is chicken sauteed with mushrooms and tomatoes. And they make it with like a white wine
5:22
cognac sauce. I mean, of course, why not? White wine cognac, it goes so good together. Like, that's
5:27
one that you're like, you sit there and you're like, I feel like I've made it. I feel like I'm
5:32
in France, you know, like that's one of those really good things you're going to have when you're here. And I think there's a lot of other things, one that you'll see, like I was at the restaurant
5:39
I was at the Debouchon, I went for lunch today, it was part of their menu lyonnaise, so it started with the lyonnaise salad and then it had the tablet de sapeur, which is basically beef tripe
5:49
Yeah stomach Marinated they get it down and they batter it and fry it up and it looks good But if you don like tripe I just gonna let you know Might not be for you but it does look amazing
6:01
But just know tripe is not always for everybody. So I just want to let you know, it's a very popular thing, but you gotta have the right
6:08
taste for it. Now going along with the tripe, the fried tripe, I think it's important to mention a
6:13
couple of sausages that you might have when you're here in Lyon. One is the Boudin Noir, which is a blood sausage, which is actually pretty good
6:20
I like that one. But the other one is the Androuillette sausage, which you see a lot of places around France
6:26
And it looks fantastic. And you'll see, like, I want to order that. But what you need to know is that Androuillette sausage
6:32
Yeah, I butchered. It's OK. French people butcher English. It's OK. The food is fantastic
6:36
But this Androuillette sausage is made with tripe. OK, so be aware of that, because when you chew it up, you notice the organiness of it
6:45
versus like a more smooth sausage, I feel. But the locals love it, but that is something you could try when you're here as well
6:51
If you're looking for some wines, you know, you get a Cote de Rhone, you know, that's good. But the Beaujolais, the local Beaujolais wines, that would be something I'd probably get
6:58
You could also do a Creme de Cassis, so there is that too. But there's just a lot of stuff you can have here
7:03
But I'm going to go eat, and you can go back to up in Roman Ruins for the rest of the video. Another thing I think is kind of interesting that you might want to try
7:09
because when you see it, you go, wait a minute, what is that? It's the Paté en Croute
7:13
Basically what it is, it's a pate, you know, the smashed up meats and stuff inside
7:17
And then it has a kind of pastry crust around it. And they slice it like bread
7:21
So you see it and you think, oh, that looks like a fantastic, like, crispy bread thing
7:25
And then you get the slice. They're like, oh, it's the pate in the middle. It actually is really good
7:30
Like, that's one to, like, get that. That's a good one. Like, that's très bon. Like, I would recommend that one if you're looking for something that you go, huh, that's weird
7:36
But honestly, though, that might be one of the weirder things you see and go, huh, that's interesting
7:40
But what you're going to notice is an overall theme. when it comes to color schemes in food here in Lyon, and that is pink, because you have the pink
7:48
pralines here. Now, you know pralines in the U.S. with pecans, but here in Lyon, the pralines are
7:54
made with almonds. And what it is, it's caramelized almonds. They use a pink sugar to give it that
7:59
pink vibe. And the pralines themselves, wonderful. You can eat the pralines, just get a bag, do that
8:03
you'll be happy. Or you might get a tart au praline, a tart with the pralines on top. You can do that
8:09
heck you can get eclairs that have pinks like icing and then the pralines on top you can do that
8:14
but honestly for me my favorite way of having it the brioche with pralines in it they bake the
8:20
brioche bread with the crushed up pralines in it oh my god it is so good so good you don't want to
8:26
pass up on that that is like my favorite thing to get okay now after the pink pralines if you're
8:32
looking for other sweets like one thing you want to take something home to people uh you can get some of the chocolates from here. There's a lot of really famous chocolates from Lyon, but the
8:39
Couchon de Lyon is, you'll see it, it looks like, it's basically like chocolate ganache center and then it's got a
8:46
green like almond paste on the outside and has a green wrapper from from Boisson It a famous chocolate here but honestly there tons of chocolate paste and just bring people home chocolate from here you be fine but that Couchon de Lyon is probably the most famous one
9:00
But there's a lot of really good sweet treats when you're here and I'll be honest with you when you go to the restaurants whether it's the Boussaint or it's the normal restaurants
9:07
what I would do is just ask them what should I get at your restaurant because they're going to
9:11
tell you what they recommend. I know where I was today I was getting the Lyonnais salad and I was
9:15
was getting the the uh quenelle because i needed to get the video of it and show it to the ladies
9:19
like ah but you really should get our pork shoulder that's what's really good here i'm like i would
9:23
love to get the pork shoulder but i gotta get the video of these i won't lie to you're gonna come
9:28
out of those things bursting bursting with food but also bursting with happiness because the food
9:33
is so good it's so rich it's so filling so just like oof when you're in there like you'll see
9:37
bone marrow and pork shoulder and all kinds of other great foods and i will say this don't think
9:42
You just have to eat, like, typical Leonese food when you're here. They have other stuff as well, like, that you'll just enjoy, like the pork shoulder
9:49
Fantastic. But in there, I have the Salad Leonese, which was the, you know, the lettuce and the poached egg
9:54
But it's like tons and tons of bacon and the Dijon mustard dressing
9:58
It was fantastic. And then I have the canel, the fish dumpling or the fish croquette
10:03
It's big. And it was in a lobster bisque. So good. And they'll be in different, like, the canel will be in different ways
10:10
But, oh, my gosh, it's so, so good. But honestly, you'll be super, super full
10:14
But I will tell you, here in Lyon, don't be surprised if you need to go up and pay
10:19
As opposed to them bringing you the bill, you might need to go to the register to pay. Because I think it's more of those, look, you're going to be eating a lot here
10:24
You're going to enjoy yourself. When you're ready to pay, you just come let us know. So that's one of those things you need to know about Lyon, all right
10:30
But honestly, no matter where you eat, you're going to eat well. But the bouchon, definitely something you should do
10:35
But honestly, I am not eating anymore today because I'm going to explode. So honestly, if the locals recommend something to you, go for it
10:42
Because one thing I found is the people here in Lyon are super friendly and super helpful
10:46
especially when it comes to food. So the lady that literally dragged me into the store to get the brioche for the pralines
10:52
Merci beaucoup! And for the wonderful waitress I had down in my couchon or my bouchon in the old town
10:59
thank you for like telling me what I should have gotten, but not feeling too sorry for me that I still had a wonderful meal
11:05
because it is one of those nice things. And I want to tell you, when you do come here, since there's so many great restaurants, a lot of people come here just to eat
11:12
There's a lot of food tours you can do to learn about the food here. But I will recommend, make reservations, especially if you're going to be here in the summertime when a lot of tourists are here
11:20
Make reservations so you know you get a place to eat. Because a lot of these places do book out because a lot of them are kind of small
11:26
So therefore, they can't fit a lot of people in. So it might be something you want to kind of think about. Also, if you want to do some wine tours, you can do some wine tours around here in Lyon as well
11:34
But honestly, you're probably gonna eat so much you're not going to go anywhere anyway
11:37
But I hope you have a few ideas what you should eat when you come here to Lyon because you literally can't go wrong
11:43
With the food Lyon. It is magnifique. So say au revoir from here in the Roman ruins up here in Lyon. Bye
food
