But I still remember the first time I had this, I'm like, oh my god, this has changed my life
0:04
Hey there fellow hungry travelers, Mike here with Walter's World, and today we're here in Torino, Italy, or Turin as you might know
0:10
And today we're going to talk about what you should eat when you come here to Turin, and just Piedmont in general
0:15
And the thing is, there's tons of fantastic food here, and since this is in the Alps, and it is a mountain-y kind of thing, it is much more of a robust cuisine
0:21
So if you're kind of used to the lighter fare that you have in other parts of Italy
0:26
you might notice a little bit more impact on your belly and your belt when you're here than other parts
0:33
So what I've done in this video is I'm actually going to put it into like, oh, starters, first plates, second plates, desserts
0:38
So it's more like a menu when we go through. Because there's some really fantastic things you want to start with when you're here in Torino
0:46
And I want to start off with my favorite. I still remember the first time I had this, I'm like, oh my God, this has changed my life
0:51
the vitello tonnato and what it is it's thinly sliced veal and when you see it you might think
0:56
oh that looks like it's like deli meat no no it's thinly sliced veal that they've chilled
1:00
and then they make this tuna mayonnaise i know it sounds weird but they make a tuna mayonnaise they
1:05
put on it or sometimes it's folded in it and it is phenomenal you talk to italians like oh yeah
1:10
vitello tonnato you have to have it like that is amazing that's the first thing i recommend you get
1:14
as a starter you want to get that now there's other starters you're going to have when you're here but that's one I had to mention first because it is one of my favorites and the thing is if
1:22
you've ever had your little tiny breadsticks well Grissini those little tiny breadsticks you have
1:26
at Italian restaurants all over the world yep that's from here so you can thank them for that
1:30
for those uh you know family dinners where you're beating your brother and sister with it and
1:34
fighting with it on there they have those here that's from here but I think what a really tasty
1:39
treat you're going to get at some of the restaurants and they'll probably give it to you as a starter before the meal starts is the Tomino cheese
1:46
And what it is, the cow cheese, but it's like the consistency, it almost makes it feel like it's maybe
1:51
a goat cheese kind of thing, but it's way more than that. Like this cow cheese is just so good
1:56
It's a soft cheese and it's just wonderful. And they usually make some kind of reduction with it
2:00
like a wine and, like I had a wine and pear reduction for it. Another one would have like onions in it
2:05
I mean, it was just amazing. It goes with it, some kind of jam on top of it. You can eat it, you can just eat it
2:10
and be happy for days. It is so good. Now, another starter, and this is one thing that you can share with your friends, you might just have with drinks or whatever, is baño calda
2:20
And baño calda, if you looked at it, you think, oh, that's fondue, right? Well, sort of, because you do dip your vegetables in it
2:26
But baño calda, what it is, is garlic, anchovies, and olive oil
2:31
So it is one of those things that you want to be eating it with your friends, because then you all can enjoy your breasts together
2:37
But it is one of those things. And when I told my friends I was coming here, they got, you gotta have baño calda
2:41
So that's one of those things you definitely should try in that kind of starter vein, okay
2:46
Now, the thing is there's a lot of great appetizers, like starters when you are here in Torino
2:50
so don let my list limit you because there so many more things that I can list in like a 10 minute video right So next I want to talk about two specific pasta dishes that you should have when you here at least pasta styles you have agnolotti and agnolotti when you see it you go oh that
3:05
ravioli but not quite ravioli but it's it's tortellini no it's not quite tortellini it's
3:08
somewhere in between it's a stuffed little stuffed shell it looks like ravioli or tortellini is
3:12
somewhere in that vein little pinched off kind of thing and the thing is the filling can be
3:17
different like you could have lamb in it you can have you know uh other fillings in there other
3:21
different meats in there like I had one that multiple meats I mean it's just it is a fantastic
3:26
but slightly heavy because the meat in there pasta that you should have and there's different sauces
3:32
you can have with it sometimes it's almost like in a like a thin gravy in there or you might have
3:36
it with butter sauce I mean you'll notice there's a lot of butter sauce here in Piedmont in general
3:41
it's kind of like they switched out the olive oil for butter in some of the dishes so that's another
3:45
reason why it's a little bit heavier and that's why the agnolotti sometimes feels a bit heavier
3:49
when you have that but the agnolotti is a must when you are here the other one and i know i'm
3:54
gonna butcher this the tacharin and tacharin is basically really thin tagliatella it's an egg
4:00
noodle uh made like really thin tagliatella and there's lots of different sauce you can have it
4:04
like i had it with a meat sauce that had beef and uh and uh sausage in it i mean it was it was
4:10
phenomenal it was phenomenal now when you look online for food for torino they're going to show
4:16
it to you but most of the time they're going to show it to you cooked in a butter sauce and then
4:19
they shave truffles on it okay because honestly truffles are a thing here like there's a festival
4:25
for truffles so if you can get that the tajarin with the butter sauce and the the shaved truffle
4:30
on there i really recommend it it's very good it's not everywhere but it is worth looking for
4:35
because it's fantastic but you can get that tajarin and agnolotti that's kind of like the two
4:39
main ones you're going to see there's other really good pastas here too but i thought those are two i
4:42
really needed to mention. And the thing is, what I've noticed online, what I've noticed in the
4:47
blogs, a lot of them just keep talking about these butter sauces, butter sauces, butter sauces. It's not just butter sauce here. You get all kinds of sauces with your pastas here, and you're
4:55
going to have a really great time, okay? So just enjoy the different pastas you have when you're
4:59
here. And now let's move on to our second plate, our second plates. And here there's a lot of good
5:03
meats. I mean, it's very much a mountainy area, so you do have a lot of fortifying meats when you're
5:08
here you will notice like sometimes organ meat might pop up in some places but in general you
5:12
can get really good meat when you're here but for me if you're looking to get a style of meat when
5:17
you are here you want to get the braised meats here okay the brazzata al barolo a barolo is local
5:22
wine i'll talk about in a bit but anything that's like like brazzata in like braised in wine here is
5:29
unbelievable it will be very dense and fortified sometimes you'll see it looks like a stews
5:34
almost, but honestly the guancia, the cheek, the beef cheek with it, the braised pork, you
5:39
can't go wrong with that with the meats here. And I will say like if you are going to eat
5:43
remember when you're in Italy, you do have the primo piatti, the pasta are small plates
5:48
and the secco they a little bit more fortified with the meats so they are separate and they will come at different times If you are a tourist and maybe you ordering a prima piatti like a pasta and someone else is ordering a meat you can ask them to bring them at the same time so you all kind of eat together
6:01
Or you can be like me and just get every single one of the plates so that you don't have to worry about it
6:05
And the thing is, there's a lot of other dishes here. I mean, there's a risotto, which I know goes more into the first plate
6:11
You have that. There's a lot of different foods you can get here. So be ready for that, especially the risotto with the Barolo wine
6:18
that is a really tasty kind of thing you can have too. So there is a lot of variety in the food here
6:24
which is really nice. Also you should know is Torino has a lot of money. This is a this is not
6:29
a cheap place to go out okay. Don't expect to eat cheap when you are here. Don't expect to
6:33
stay cheap when you are here. So plan that in your budget. But what's cool is they do have a lot of
6:39
aperitivo time here. So if you're going to go around you can get aperitivos and if you're not
6:44
sure what that is. That's the like after work before dinner, like let's meet for a drink and
6:49
have a snack thing. And the, uh, I've seen it called a pita was a pita China, which is a pita
6:55
TV and chain, which is dinner in Italian put together. But you'll see that they'll actually
6:58
places that have buffets for a pita TV time. So you could actually go do that because maybe you're
7:03
a little, like you're pretty full from lunch. Like, I don't think I can do a whole meal. You could do that for a dinner kind of thing. You could do that. Um, but if you are going to be
7:11
there for aperitivos. One aperitivo you should have when you are here is vermouth, because vermouth is
7:16
from Torino. So whether you're having vermouth or maybe you better have a cocktail made with vermouth
7:20
that is something that's very traditional from Torino. Also with the drinks here, the wine
7:24
There's two famous wines from here. Probably the most famous one is Barolo, and you're going to have
7:28
that food cooked in it, but you also can drink it obviously, and it is a very good, bold wine
7:34
Barbaresco is another wine from here that you should try. But probably what you really want
7:39
want to have when you're here, when you're going around and enjoying this city is the coffee. Like Torino is the home of Lavazza. And my wife specifically told me to say thank you to the
7:47
Lavazza family and Torino for making great coffee because she loves Lavazza. That's her go-to like
7:52
all the time when it's on sale at the grocery store. She buys all of them. She has a problem
7:56
She has a problem. But it is really good coffee here. And there's tons of cafes for you to enjoy
8:00
that. Now, there is a Torino coffee classic you should have when you're here. It's more of a
8:06
breakfast thing, but you can have it any time and it's the bicherin. And bicherin, what it is
8:10
it's basically chocolate, espresso and cream. So it might be like hot chocolate, like drinking
8:16
chocolate, not like Swiss mist mixed, but like really thick drinking chocolate, then an espresso
8:20
on it and they put the whipped cream on there. Now, the locals, you don't stir it, you just drink it
8:24
okay? Or let it kind of merge together. Because I saw a lot of tourists just take their spoon right
8:28
away and stir it all up into one like mess. No, you want to let it like sit and enjoy and just kind
8:33
enjoy the whole thing when you have it. So another dump for you when you're here in
8:37
Torino, if you get a bichirin, which you should because it's from here, it's
8:41
basically hot chocolate then espresso then whipped cream on top It actually is pretty good Don stir it You just kind of let it be and just enjoy it as you drink it You be fine but don stir it You can but if you want to be like the locals don stir it Just enjoy it
8:58
So those are some of the drinks you might have when you're here. Now let's think about desserts because we always want desserts when we're here
9:03
And there's some really fantastic desserts when you're here. But first off, I have to mention the most famous one, panna cotta
9:10
Yes, that cream dessert you see all over Italy. Yeah, that's actually from here. You can get that
9:15
But the thing is, if you want something that's really from here that you really just kind of only get here, you have bunette
9:20
And what bunette is, is kind of think about a, I would say like a chocolate flan, like a chocolate panna cotta almost
9:26
But it has these amaretto cookie on the bottom, kind of soaked through and rum with it
9:30
It's actually really good. It's very thick. And I will tell you, if you have a meal of vitello tornato and then you go with the agnolotti and then you have the brisata, the braised meat, it's hard to get it down
9:42
okay i had there's a great restaurant over there and i was like i'm gonna die but i'm gonna die
9:46
happy okay you will when you're here you will die happy because of food so filling so rich so
9:51
wonderful you're going to really enjoy it and the thing is here hazelnuts are really big so you might
9:55
see hazelnut stuff in your desserts like there's the torta de nocciole which is a hazelnut flour
10:01
torts so if you're gluten free hey there you go i'm looking out for you right so you have that
10:05
but obviously um hazelnuts and uh nutella based things are kind of big because nutella is from
10:10
from this region and actually one thing you need to know is Torino is famous for its chocolates
10:15
You're going to see chocolate stores around here and you should get some and honestly if you see
10:19
chocolate in a gold wrapper okay the chocolate in the gold wrapper Gianduotto I know I'm butchering
10:25
it but it is a it's chocolate made with hazelnuts so it's basically like think of a Nutella chocolate
10:31
like a firm one makes a great gift to take home. I actually bought some from my Italian friends I'm
10:36
going to go visit here in Italy. I'm bringing it to them and I also got a pack to bring home to
10:39
Jocelyn as well so you do have that so there's tons of really great food options when you are here
10:44
if you're looking for small starters you're looking for appetizers you're looking for pasta all kinds of things out there from truffles to chocolate to agnellotti and all the braised meats
10:53
it's fantastic and I will say if you are going to come here you do want to especially as weekends
10:59
or any of the festival kind of times I would recommend making reservations for dinner because
11:04
the locals love to eat the fantastic food here too so just make sure you have that kind of in
11:09
your mind when you're planning out if you're going to be going out to have that risotto with
11:13
a Barolo. If you're going to be going out for, you know, something special, I do recommend getting
11:17
reservations. Anyway, I know I did not put everything in that people should eat and drink
11:21
when they come here to Torino, but what are some things you think should be on this list as well
11:26
Put it down in the comments below so we can have other travelers enjoy more of the great food here and the great drinks and the great wine and, yes, the great coffee. And that's saying something for
11:34
someone that doesn't drink coffee, but you can enjoy the hot chocolate here
11:38
the chocolate caldo, because, my goodness, it is amazing, too. Anyway, I'll say ciao from here in Torino
