0:00
Hey to fellow hungry travelers, Mark here with Wolterspoon, today we're here in Montenegro
0:03
and today what I'm going to talk about are some of the foods and drinks you need to have
0:07
when you come here to Montenegro, whether you're going up in the mountains, or you're staying along the coast here in Cotor, going to Budva
0:14
there's a lot of really great things you can eat and have when you are here. And I think if we're going to start, we should start with the starters
0:20
and probably the most important starter to have when you are here is the prosciutto
0:24
The prosciutto is the local prosciutto, the ham you want to have, And you'll see it as a starter on like the charcuterie boards and things
0:31
But honestly, it is a fantastic prosciutto that you have when you are here in Montenegro
0:36
And it's very hard to get it outside of Montenegro. So if you get a chance to have it, you want to have it when you're here
0:40
And have it with the local cheese. The sear, you want to have that with it
0:45
It's a great combination, a great way to start a meal. So when you're here in Montenegro, if you ever, ever, ever see the word
0:50
neguski explaining prosciutto or cheese, get it. This negushki makes fantastic proshoot
0:58
The proshoot here in Montenegro is actually really, really good. You want to have this. And if you see it in anything, like if you have pork with proshoot and the local cheese in it as well
1:07
you're guaranteed to be happy because it's not just seafood here. Get the proshoot, cheese together, and the pork
1:13
You're going to be happy, so don't miss out on that one. Now, if you want something a little more fortified to start off your meal
1:18
I would not pass up some of the fish soup when you are here. It is a really tasty soup that you have
1:24
It's very much a smooth soup. It's not really big, huge chunks of fish in there. I mean, there can be, but it's much more of a smoother soup you're going to have
1:31
That could be a nice way to start the day. And I'll be honest, even in the summertime, on a hot summer's day, it still tastes fantastic
1:37
But let's be honest. You're really hungry, and you want to know the real dishes, the real main dishes you want to have when you're here
1:42
Well, you know that prosciutto and the cheese I was talking about? If you can get pork that is stuffed with that prosciutto and the cheese in it, it is amazing
1:51
Because they do a fantastic job with the grilled meats when you're here. I mean, plenty of grilled meats to enjoy
1:55
If you want steaks, you want pork steak, you want beef steak, you want chicken done right. Like, honestly, they don't even make dry chicken breasts here
2:01
That's how good they are with the grilled meats. But for me, it was that kind of pork steak stuff with the prosciutto, the prosciutto and the cheese
2:08
That is a fantastic thing to have when you're here. If you're along the coast, what's even better
2:13
The grilled seafood. Oh, my gosh. Grilled sea bass. Grilled sea bream
2:18
You can't beat that. Octopus. Grilled octopus is wonderful. And if you're looking for a nice salad when you're here, they have octopus salad, which is, if you look at it, it kind of looks like a ceviche kind of thing
2:27
But honestly, the octopus salad is a great starter as well. And honestly, the portion sizes here are quite large
2:33
So no matter what you get, if you want to get a salad as a starter, it can also work as a meal if you want, if you want to share with people
2:38
Because that's the thing, you get so much good food here and you want to share. And you're going to have plenty to share with others
2:44
Now, when you go around Montenegro, especially along the coast, sometimes you get a very Italian vibe with the kind of architecture here
2:50
with the Venetian influence and all kinds of things. And with that, you're going to see a lot of pasta when you are here
2:55
And there is a local black risotto you want to have when you are here
2:59
or the black pasta. I mean, you'll see what they use. They use the squid ink. You know, if you have your calamari, well, let's use it all
3:04
So they use the squid ink to kind of put it in with the pasta and with the risotto. But that black risotto is really good And you can get it with seafood in there as well if you like Like I had the black tagliatello with seafood last night and it was just wonderful So you can mix these things together But if you don want to have you know Montenegro food just know there
3:22
so much pasta that's really good. You can go very well, be very happy eating pasta when you are here
3:26
in Montenegro. But the thing is, is along the coast, it really is that seafood kind of thing
3:31
You go inland, you're getting more fortifying food. So you might have sarmah and sarmahs are
3:35
just stuffed cabbage rolls right you have the cabbage leaves that's the ground up pork and and rice together into a kind of a ball they wrap it up in there you can have that that's a really
3:42
nice thing to have also if you're looking for something really traditional from here they have
3:46
lamb that calls like lamb cooked underneath a top or lamb cooked underneath a you know like
3:51
metal pot or something like that like it has a special thing let's call it you know it's
3:55
ispadsatia would be the the closest i can pronounce it but basically what it has probably potatoes
4:00
with it as well but that lamb is so good and it's like it's really an experience of having it when
4:04
here. Now I will tell you, if you're on the coast, it's not as easy to find. If you're going inland
4:08
probably a better chance to find some of those, you know, more Montenegro restaurants and have a
4:12
chance to have it there. Now we are in the Balkans and you're talking about the Balkans, you're talking
4:16
about grilled meat, cevapi comes up. It's called many different things throughout the Balkans
4:20
Basically what it is, if you imagine mincemeat, like ground up meat and spices together, made into
4:25
like a finger, like a thick finger, and then they grill it up. They'll serve it to you, three, four
4:29
five, six, seven of them together. You can have that. They're really good. Have some bread with
4:32
you can make it into a sandwich if you want but you want to have that that's a really good thing
4:36
to have and another thing you'll see a lot of places in the Balkans are the stuffed peppers and what they'll do is they'll have the mincemeat in there as well instead of mincemeat and rice in
4:43
there and it is actually really good like that's one of those things if you're serving stuffed peppers at home it's similar to that where from where you're from but here just it hits different
4:51
when you are here and I've actually had some really good ones Liam even ate half the last
4:55
time I ordered he's like yes I want some more dad so stuffed peppers can be a nice thing to have
5:00
here too. Now what about dessert when you're here? Well there's a few things and some of the stuff
5:03
you'll see around the Balkans. Yeah baklava is popular here you know the the puff pastry, the
5:08
flaky pastry, layers of pastry right in there. Then the walnuts in there and it's usually like
5:12
in a syrup or honey that it's soaked in. I will say the baklava here is less sweet. It's kind of
5:17
like the more you're going north from Turkey and Greece the less sweet it is I find but it is still
5:21
very good. You have purgans which I know I'm probably pronouncing wrong because I think I'm
5:26
saying how they say it in Bulgaria or Romania, but Pregants is basically, they'll say, oh
5:30
fried dough balls. No, it's just a big, like, think about, think about a big, huge fried donut hole
5:36
like a big one, and they might serve it with, you know, cheese or honey or jam. It's really good
5:40
and that can be, like, actually, it could be a dessert, or it could be actually, like, for breakfast
5:44
either way, so you can do that. Also, crempita, and crempita, basically, layers of puss, you've
5:51
seen that, again, in the Balkans, you'll see a lot of this food over and over again. Basically, think of layers of pastry and a bunch of custard in there. That's a really good one. Like that's
5:59
my go-to like chillax one-on-one in the Balkans. That's a really good dessert you can have when
6:03
you're here. Now in terms of the drinks, well Montenegro actually has some really good wine
6:07
but the thing is they produce so little wine that a lot of it doesn't get out of the country. So you
6:11
probably haven't had Montenegro wine. So when you're here, you want to have the Montenegro wine
6:15
So Vernac is the red wine. It's a very bold red wine. That's from here. If you're looking for a
6:20
white wine you have Croustache and that more of a you know a fruity citrusy wine I mean it is really good I prefer the red over the white when you are here But either one is going to be fine And when you go to restaurants here they going to have lots of different wines listed
6:32
So you want to make sure you look and see the ones that are actually from Montenegro. Because they're going to have French wine, Italian wine, all kinds of other places
6:38
So make sure you get the local wine when you are here. Now, another local sipper you're going to have here is a rakia
6:45
A rakia. If you've been in Greece and something like that. It basically pressed grapes
6:49
You know, like, you know, liquor made from that. It's just basically a fruit brandy. It can be made out of grapes
6:53
It can be made out of plums. It can be made out of lots of different mulberry. It can be made out of a lot of different, you know, fruits that are here
6:59
But that's a typical kind of aperitif. Like you have that before the meal. So that helps you with your appetite to get you going
7:04
So if you want to have like a salad to start off with, you can do that. But that's really nice
7:08
And I think another drink I think is important to mention when you come here is the coffee. They really like the coffee
7:13
Like the Turkish coffee kind of stuff. You know, the really strong coffee. They love that here
7:17
So if you're looking for coffee, you're going to find it. And if you get a chance to hang out with the locals and they're asking to go have coffee, that's a sign that they want to talk to you
7:24
That's a good way to make friends when you are here, okay? Now, if you aren't going to be going to restaurants here, one thing I want to tell you, service is a bit slow
7:32
It'll be friendly. Like the Montenegro's are actually pretty friendly, but it is a little bit slow
7:36
So you need to have patience when you're waiting to get the menu. You're waiting to get seated. You're waiting to get your drinks. You need to have patience with that
7:41
But it's okay because the food is good. The people are friendly. So that's pretty nice
7:45
when you are wanting your bill, you do have to ask for your bill because, again, they're not rushing
7:49
to work for you, but they're also not rushing you to actually eat. So if you want the bill, just
7:54
you know, hey, could I get the bill, please? No problem. You pay with credit card, cash. Cash is
7:58
you get away from, like, the tourist areas. Cash becomes more of an important thing, but if you're
8:02
in a tourist area, credit cards work. I mean, heck, I didn't even pay with American Express. That's
8:05
how much they like the credit cards here. So you can have that, but in general, cash is more of a
8:09
thing, especially if you're going to see something on the side of the road or if you're going to grab ice cream. It's nice just to have some cash and to have that. And they do use the Euros when you
8:17
are here. So you can help yourself with that. Now, another thing is if you want to kind of
8:22
ingratiate yourself with the waitstaff and you get to a restaurant and you should do this when
8:25
you go to a store, when you go anywhere in Montenegro, it's a good idea to know a few words
8:29
So like molim is please. So like, oh, Coca-Cola molim, Coca-Cola please, right? You want to say
8:35
thank you. It's vala. You know, so they bring your food. Vala. That works really well that way
8:39
Dobar den. Dobar den is like good days. You walk into sort of then you want to restaurant do more than that's nice. If you
8:46
can't do that, just simple high is travel. Travel is all you have
8:50
to say that's like hi, like, okay. And believe me, they'll know you don't see Montenegro. They know that it's not your
8:54
language, you don't speak it, but they really will appreciate if you do that. And it makes the service a little bit more with a
8:59
smile when you are here. Now in terms of service and in terms of
9:03
tipping, five to 10% is totally fine to tip you can just tell them to add it on to your credit card, you can do it that way
9:08
probably if you want to make them happy, you can just tip them in cash and just pay your credit
9:13
bill on a credit card because then you know the money goes straight to them. There's no like middle person in there to kind of take anything out of those things there. I think another thing
9:20
that's important to mention is when you are here, there's a lot of seasonal stuff. So like the fruit you have will be seasonal. And so that means the desserts you have, like if you have like
9:29
some kind of like cake or some kind of tort or some kind of pie, it really will depend on the
9:33
fruit that in season at that time The jams you going to have at your hotels your restaurants Oh a lot of those times they getting the fresh stuff from here Montenegro it really will depend on the fruit that here So take advantage of that So while you here you should definitely try out the Carraxed Cake It from this sweet little town
9:51
It's not an overly sweet dessert. I kind of like it. It's almondy, a little crumbly, but like in a good way
10:00
They served it with some really great vanilla ice cream and I would recommend it
10:06
At least, you know, some wine. And this is like a lot of places when you come in Montenegro
10:10
The people will be very friendly. The service will be very helpful. So if you have any questions, just ask them
10:14
They'll be like, hey, this might be something you want to try. This is something you want to have from here. Make sure you have the cake when you are here, like Jocelyn said
10:20
But honestly, you have all these restaurants around here where you can eat very well and have a really nice time and really nice service
10:25
Also, if you want to try different types of Montenegro wine, They actually have pomegranate wine you can try when you're here too. So when you're here in Montenegro
10:32
Don't feel bad if you feel like you're destroying an entire forest because every time you order something
10:37
They seem to bring you an extra another copy of your receipt. That's normal
10:42
So if you order drinks, they'll bring you receipt and then if you wait to order something else They'll bring you another receipt for that
10:46
So just know if you want to save a tree or do everything at once to kind of save it up
10:50
But they will kind of collect on your table. So be aware of that. Also when you are here
10:55
don't forget about the montenegrin wine vernak is probably the most famous one the red wine here
11:00
but they have good whites but this is one i definitely recommend it's a very bold flavor which were a fuller body but a little fruity so it is a nice like drinking wine so you can enjoy
11:11
when you're here with the food and don't forget to have if you're like in koutou or don't forget
11:15
to have the black risottos if you're here that's a really good thing because you know what it's not
11:20
just a tasty you know pork with the prosciutto and the cheese as well there's a lot of good food
11:24
here. And the thing is that there's lots of different restaurants you can go to and visit when you are here in Montenegro. If you want Montenegro food, you can find that. You want
11:30
international food, you can find that as well. And if you're going to be all along the coastline
11:34
I'm not going to lie to you, where all the tourists are, like in Budva and Kotor, it's sometimes a little bit harder to find the Montenegro specialties than it is to find like
11:41
pasta and pizza kind of stuff. So make sure you keep your eyes open for some of the local foods
11:46
here. Get those grilled meats, get that grilled fish, the black risotto, or there are some things
11:50
that do work in the pasta family that are from here. But it's just one of those things I want you to know is that you have multiple options
11:55
eating when you come here to Montenegro. All right. So what are some foods that I forgot to mention
12:00
Because I know there's more stuff out there. You know, we can look at kachamak, which is basically, how would I explain it
12:05
It's like cheesy potatoes, but with, you know, like cornmeal in it
12:10
It's really hard to explain, but that's one of those things you might see in your more inland kind of stuff, but not in all the restaurants
12:16
I'm going to tell you that. But you do see it. It's worth trying. But what are the things we're missing? If you're from Montenegro, you traveled in Montenegro, please let us know in the comments below some of the other fantastic foods we should try when we're here
