0:00
in this cruise update i want to cover
0:01
one of the most underreported
0:04
but significant things going on in the
0:05
world of cruising and that's the
0:08
departure of cruise ships from u.s
0:10
waters over the last few months
0:12
as cruise lines pull their ships out of
0:14
the u.s what's going on
0:16
why they're doing it and what does it
0:18
mean for you and the return
0:20
to cruising in the u.s at the beginning
0:22
of the pandemic over 120
0:25
cruise ships were selling or entering
0:28
by the time that hit august there were
0:31
only just over 30 ships
0:32
in u.s waters what exactly is going on
0:35
and what does it mean
0:37
i think there are five critical things
0:39
that you need to know about that
0:41
triggered the polar ships from the
0:42
united states the first big trigger
0:45
was the need to repatriate crew
0:48
the cdc the center for disease control
0:51
and prevention in the u.s
0:52
introduced some new rules not long after
0:54
the shutdown which prohibited
0:56
cruise lines from repatriating and
0:59
removing crew off those 120 odd ships
1:02
they were in u.s waters bringing them on
1:03
land using commercial transport and
1:06
commercial flights so the only real
1:09
option that cruise lines had was to sell
1:12
and there was a dramatic removal at that
1:15
of ships out of u.s waters carnival
1:18
group which includes obviously carnival
1:20
holland america princess
1:22
seabourn they sent over half their fleet
1:25
all around the world to repatriate crew
1:27
they took home 40 000 crew members
1:29
that was the first big trigger for a lot
1:32
leaving u.s waters the second big
1:36
for ships leaving was some rules which
1:38
followed not long after where the cdc
1:41
put in some really strict regulations
1:43
and rules around crew who were on the
1:45
remaining ships in u.s waters
1:46
crew members had to be given their own
1:48
cabin which is fine so they weren't
1:50
but there was strong pressure to keep
1:52
crew when they weren't working
1:54
in their cabin so basically they were
1:55
kind of quarantined and stuck in their
1:58
and there was restrictions on the amount
1:59
of social activities they could do
2:01
things like the fitness centers should
2:02
be closed there shouldn't be bars
2:04
there's going to be social events
2:05
and some of the cruise lines took the
2:06
view that this was a really bad idea
2:08
for the health and welfare of their crew
2:10
so carnival corporation
2:11
at that point in time made the decision
2:14
to take all of their ships
2:15
out of u.s waters so they didn't have to
2:17
follow those rules around
2:18
their crew many of them just moving into
2:21
the caribbean but some of them further
2:22
afield into europe and
2:23
further beyond those two first key
2:27
the amount of ships that by june had
2:30
reduced from 120 ships to just
2:32
50 ships the third big trigger which
2:35
caused more cruise lines to pull ships
2:37
after june was the cdc introduced
2:38
another rule and this is where they
2:40
introduced the color coding system
2:42
which was designed to track and report
2:45
either suspected or actual outbreaks of
2:48
on those ships still within us waters
2:52
the system when it came was pretty
2:53
controversial disputed a lot by the
2:55
cruise lines only one
2:57
ship and one cruise line got a full
2:58
green early on and that was actually the
3:00
bahamas paradise language at that point
3:02
many more ships started to leave so when
3:04
that system came in in june there were
3:07
but by the beginning of august 18 ships
3:08
were left there was only 32 ships in
3:10
u.s waters the two reasons that
3:14
cruise lines used for pulling out was
3:16
not so much the tracking of the ships
3:18
two other things so the first thing was
3:20
cost related so norwegian cruise line
3:22
had 20 ships in u.s waters
3:23
they pulled 17 of those out and sent
3:27
to europe and what they argued at the
3:28
time is with the ships now in cold layup
3:31
and with cruising suspended for in a
3:33
definite period of time
3:35
was they needed to find the cheapest way
3:37
of keeping those ships
3:38
in limbo as it were and they argued it
3:40
was much cheaper to move those ships
3:42
to places like europe because the costs
3:44
were lower in quad layout but also there
3:46
was more flexibility about
3:47
as created their various assignments and
3:50
contracts they could get them
3:51
off in those sports and get new crew
3:54
the next big trigger was the need to
3:58
to the shipyards to do for its
4:00
maintenance work and update so for
4:02
virgin sent their scarlet lady back to
4:04
genoa where it went through some updates
4:07
for example introducing the whole
4:09
filtration system to improve their whole
4:11
air conditioning what's interesting is
4:13
there's only three cruise lines that
4:16
ships in u.s waters remaining and the
4:18
first of those is the royal caribbean
4:20
they actually have 22 ships still within
4:23
mostly their royal caribbean lion ships
4:26
and their celebrity cruise ships
4:28
msc cruisers has kept their four ships
4:30
that are based out of the us in u.s
4:32
waters and the bahama paradise line
4:34
has one ship so what does this mean
4:37
for us as cruisers and this dramatic
4:39
pulling out of ships out of the us
4:41
all the cruise lines have said and we've
4:43
seen this in europe as well is that when
4:45
ships do return to service
4:46
they're likely to be looking at what
4:48
artillery are going to be running out of
4:50
and how many ships and which ships so
4:53
ultimate flexibility they are unlikely
4:55
to come back with existing itineraries
4:57
and they would like to come back with
4:58
the full fleet they don't need all of
5:01
ships close because i think it's
5:04
as the cruise line's telling us that
5:05
when cruising is given the go ahead in
5:08
it's going to start with a big bang it's
5:10
going to dribble back
5:12
with various trials as we've seen happen
5:15
with a few ships at a time so ships
5:18
leaving the u.s waters is probably less
5:20
from the cruise lines perspective than
5:22
perhaps as us as cruisers who are
5:23
expecting cruising to perhaps start
5:25
with a big bang there has been a
5:29
of ships out of the us those are the key
5:32
for that and what i think it means for
5:34
us remember i have frequent cruise
5:36
updates so why don't you watch others of
5:37
those now certainly make sure you
5:39
to the channel to watch the updates as
