Russia Builds Domestic VMware Alternative With Elbrus CPUs and VDI Technology
May 6, 2026
Russia’s domestic technology ecosystem has taken another major step forward with the release of the updated Iridium PC virtualization platform, now featuring support for Elbrus processors and advanced VDI infrastructure. In this video, we explore how the new platform combines virtualization, cluster management, remote desktop technologies, and enterprise infrastructure into a fully domestic ecosystem designed to reduce reliance on Western software vendors.
The updated Iridium PC package includes the Sphere cluster management system with High Availability and Distributed Resource Scheduling support, enabling stable and efficient server virtualization environments. At the same time, the REFLECT Desktop client has successfully demonstrated smooth VDI operation on systems powered by Elbrus processors, including the Elbrus 2C3 thin client platform.
The demonstration showed graphical applications launching normally, seamless switching between virtual desktops, and responsive remote desktop performance under Elbrus OS. According to developers, the user experience is nearly indistinguishable from working on a physical PC. This represents a significant milestone for Russia’s domestic computing ecosystem, where software compatibility and enterprise usability have often been bigger challenges than hardware itself.
In this video, we break down what virtualization and VDI actually mean in simple terms, why thin clients matter for enterprise security, and how this project fits into Russia’s broader push for technological sovereignty. We also examine the importance of GPU acceleration support for NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel hardware, which could allow advanced 3D graphics and AI workloads to run inside virtual desktop environments.
Beyond the technical side, the Iridium and Elbrus partnership reflects a wider strategic effort to build a complete domestic enterprise infrastructure stack consisting of processors, operating systems, virtualization platforms, remote desktop technologies, and secure enterprise management tools.
Could this become a true domestic alternative to VMware and Citrix within Russia’s enterprise sector? And how far has the Elbrus ecosystem evolved compared to earlier generations? Watch the full video for a detailed breakdown of Russia’s latest virtualization and VDI developments.
