a Christmas swag is a great way to
0:05
decorate your home they're really
0:07
versatile you can use them to Adorn your
0:10
lanterns on the outside of your house
0:12
you can use one in the place of a wreath
0:15
on your front door you can also use them
0:17
to decorate your staircase or even your
0:20
kitchen cabinets they are a really great
0:23
thing to have on hand during the
0:24
Christmas time but unfortunately they
0:27
can be a little bit expensive and so I
0:30
have come up with a very inexpensive DIY
0:34
Christmas Swag that anyone can do even
0:37
if you are not into the DIY scene I
0:40
promise you this is going to be very
0:42
easy everything that I used was from the
0:45
Dollar Tree so it's very affordable I
0:48
made five swags and they came out to be
0:51
about
0:52
$525 per swag to make them you just
0:56
cannot beat that price if you were to
0:58
buy them individually might be anywhere
1:01
from you know 20 to $35 a piece so I'm
1:06
going to jump right in and show you how
1:08
to make these easy DIY Christmas
1:12
swags hi I'm lindsy Diane from Dian
1:15
decor.com let's jump right into this DIY
1:18
Christmas Swag tutorial by starting with
1:22
the items that you're going to need
1:24
first you'll need two trees from the
1:27
Dollar Tree these are the small 2ft
1:30
trees for
1:31
$125 you're also going to need some
1:34
ribbon you're going to need two types of
1:38
decorative stems so for me I used these
1:41
glitter berries and glitter bay leaves
1:44
but you can use anything you'd like then
1:47
I would pick up a pack of their small
1:50
ornaments as well as a pack of zip
1:54
ties you're also going to need some hot
1:58
glue a hot glue gun and some scissors so
2:01
for my project I wanted to have multiple
2:04
swags so that I could put them running
2:06
along my staircase so I created Five
2:09
swags in total it cost me
2:13
2625 plus tax to buy all of the supplies
2:17
for these if you wanted to make that
2:19
many swags you're going to need 10 trees
2:22
two ornament packs three glitter Berry
2:25
clusters two glitter bay leaves three
2:29
spool of ribbon and one pack of zip ties
2:32
along with your hot glue and your hot
2:34
glue gun and your scissors if you want
2:37
to do that on average they're going to
2:39
come out to be about 525 a piece now if
2:41
you just want to make a set of swags
2:43
let's say you want to use them for your
2:44
lanterns outside or something like that
2:47
you can do this whole project well under
2:49
$10 okay so here's how I created these
2:53
DIY swags we're going to start out with
2:57
the two Christmas trees so you're going
3:00
to go ahead and unbox them and you're
3:03
going to pull off the little base at the
3:06
bottom so that you just have the pole
3:07
sticking out
3:09
there then you're going to proceed to
3:11
start fluffing out the trees so you're
3:15
going to lay them flat on your surface
3:17
and fan out the branches to either side
3:20
almost creating a flat little tree
3:23
you're going to end up with a nice
3:24
little triangle sort of shape you're
3:26
going to do this for the second tree as
3:28
well and once you finished you're going
3:31
to flip one tree upside down and Orient
3:35
it so that they're slightly overlapping
3:38
and you've created somewhat of a diamond
3:40
shape with your two trees
3:46
[Music]
4:01
then you're going to use your zip ties
4:04
and you're going to attach the two poles
4:08
together I would attach these at two
4:10
different locations probably one towards
4:13
the top where they overlap and one
4:15
towards the bottom where they overlap
4:16
just that you have a nice secure swag
4:20
but this is very very simple to do if
4:22
you don't have zip ties and you have
4:24
twine on hand or some uh green string or
4:28
even some twist ties all of those things
4:30
would work to secure these two items
4:34
together once your zip ties are tighten
4:37
you're just going to snip the ends with
4:39
your
4:40
scissors and next we're going to move on
4:43
to adding a few embellishments with the
4:47
bay leaf stems so I'm just cutting off a
4:50
small little cluster I'm going to use
4:54
two at the top and two at the bottom of
4:58
each of these
5:02
swags so I'm going to tuck these in the
5:05
stem side should always be tucked in
5:07
towards the center of your swag and once
5:11
you've got them into place where you'd
5:12
like you're just going to put a dollop
5:14
of hot glue on there to secure them in
5:16
place
5:19
[Music]
5:28
[Music]
5:32
then I moved on to the berries again you
5:35
don't have to use the bay leaes and
5:37
berries they you know depending upon
5:40
your Dollar Tree um if you're familiar
5:43
you know that the stock changes from
5:45
store to store some things you can find
5:47
in one store that you can't find in
5:48
another so just choose two types of
5:51
stems that you really liked or you can
5:53
go to Walmart or Michaels it doesn't
5:56
really matter where you pick them up
5:57
from just choose two that that are going
6:00
to give you a variety of texture and
6:02
maybe a little bit of a variety in color
6:04
as well I am going for more of a
6:07
champagne silvery kind of look for my uh
6:10
swags so that's why you're seeing I have
6:13
some of the champagne berries and I
6:14
could only find the silver bay leaves so
6:17
I just ran with it although I would have
6:19
preferred to have the champagne ones
6:22
with the berries because they're a
6:24
larger cluster I am just adding one to
6:27
the top and one to the bottom
6:30
if you can't find the berries but you
6:31
really like that kind of little ball
6:34
cluster look Dollar Tree also
6:36
sells um glitter ball vase filler so
6:41
you'll see it in a little bag it's
6:43
probably going to be in the general area
6:46
of the PS and stems and all the
6:49
Christmas florals if not it's going to
6:52
be probably towards the front of the
6:54
store where they're highlighting all the
6:56
little ornaments and things like that
6:58
it's just going to be a little bag
6:59
filled with little glitter balls of vase
7:01
filler and you can just hot glue those
7:03
on individually to create the same kind
7:06
of berry look and then I'm going to go
7:08
in with some of my ornament balls now I
7:12
use just two or three for each swag here
7:16
I'm putting on two I'm starting there
7:18
and then I'm moving on to my ribbon but
7:21
there were some in the end that I went
7:22
ahead and added on an extra ball just to
7:24
kind of fill it out a little bit now
7:27
with the ribbon I am not the the best at
7:30
creating bows I will be the first to
7:32
admit it um I just kind of made it work
7:37
I'm going to link a tutorial a really
7:40
good tutorial for making bows down below
7:42
in the description box um if you don't
7:45
want to fuss with making your own bow
7:48
you can always just buy some bows they
7:51
sell them at Dollar Tree they sell them
7:52
at Walmart you can get like maybe a
7:54
15inch bow and it will have some nice
7:56
long tails on it for a dollar um and
7:59
then you just have them for your swags
8:01
and you won't have to fuss with the
8:02
ribbon and tying it and twisting it and
8:04
getting it fluffed out just right um but
8:07
I did fuss with them a little bit I
8:09
don't love the color of my ribbon it's a
8:13
little bit too yellow gold for my liking
8:16
because I was going for that champagne
8:18
that cool gold champagne look um I'm
8:22
still deciding whether or not I'm going
8:24
to swap out this ribbon but for now it
8:27
works so once you've got your
8:30
bow tied just go ahead and use either a
8:34
zip tie or a twist tie to hold your
8:38
cluster together add your Tails snip
8:42
your ends and you're done

10:08
here's a final look at the swags after I
10:11
attached them to the rails on my
10:13
stairway I absolutely love the way these
10:16
turned out again I just use zip ties to
10:19
attach them so I can take them down
10:21
easily next year you can also use string
10:25
or twine or um little twist ties
10:29
anything you have on hand that will
10:30
fasten them to the rail will work
10:32
beautifully now if you want to upgrade
10:34
your swags a little bit more I would
10:37
recommend adding some lights you can
10:40
find cordless battery operated lights
10:42
that are on little timers from Amazon
10:46
you can get them in packs of like four
10:49
or six they'll come in different colors
10:52
just be mindful of the wire color that
10:54
you choose a lot of the smaller ones are
10:56
going to be the fairy lights but they
10:58
also sell the in the standard bulb size
11:01
as well just again be mindful about how
11:04
long that string is because the swags
11:06
aren't huge so you don't necessarily
11:08
want a 20 foot long string of cordless
11:12
lights especially if you want an
11:14
individual one for each one and you
11:15
don't want to have that cord running
11:17
from each swag to the next but um they
11:21
are really inexpensive and it's a great
11:24
way just to add a little more o to these
11:27
swags they usually come with a timer
11:29
that's like 18 hours off and 6 hours on
11:33
so you can put your batteries in turn it
11:35
on the first night and it will run and
11:37
it will just keep running on that cycle
11:40
automatically through the whole
11:42
Christmas season I absolutely love this
11:45
idea and again the swags are versatile
11:48
you can put them on your cabinets you
11:49
can put them on your door you can have
11:51
them running on your staircase you can
11:53
have them on lanterns outside you can
11:55
even Mount them on your windows outside
11:58
they are just are a really really cool
12:00
way to decorate for the holidays and
12:03
with this DIY they are very very
12:07
inexpensive that's it for this video I
12:10
hope you enjoyed it if you want to see
