Hi, it's Lindsay Diane from
0:06
dianecor.com.
0:07
In this video, let's talk about three
0:10
timeless window treatment combos. These
0:13
are options that are going to give you
0:15
all of the light that you want in your
0:17
space, but also give you the privacy
0:19
that you need. When it comes to window
0:22
treatments, there are so many different
0:24
options to choose from. There's drapes,
0:26
there's shades, there's curtains,
0:28
there's plantation shutters, there's
0:30
valances. It goes on and on. And within
0:33
each of those categories, there's lots
0:35
of variation. But there are three
0:38
timeless combos that will work to meet
0:41
your basic needs of light and privacy.
0:44
So, if you're just starting out and
0:45
you're not sure what to choose, look at
0:48
some of these options and then you can
0:50
dive deeper into the variations within
0:54
each of these. So let's get started with
0:56
option number one. Number one is shades
1:01
and shears.
1:03
So shades are a fabric window covering
1:06
that you draw up, right? So you may have
1:10
corded shades, you may have magnetic
1:13
shades, you may have motorized shades,
1:16
but essentially the shades are going to
1:18
cover all of the glass with a basically
1:21
a piece of fabric. You're not really
1:24
going to be able to see past the shades.
1:26
This is sort of like a total coverage
1:28
option. Within this combo of shades and
1:31
shears, you're looking at the shades to
1:34
give you maximum privacy and block out
1:37
the light. More than anything, it's
1:40
blocking out the light. Now, when you
1:43
combine that with shears, you have the
1:46
option to draw up your shades to let in
1:48
the light, but then you can partially
1:50
draw your shears or completely draw the
1:52
shears so that you can still get some
1:55
light filtering through into your space,
1:57
but also obscure the view into your home
2:00
and give you that privacy that you need.
2:02
Now, much like the shades, there is some
2:04
variation when you when it comes to
2:06
shears, but not nearly as much, right?
2:09
Essentially, what you're looking at is a
2:11
thin piece of fabric that you can
2:13
partially see through and you're going
2:15
to just sort of hang it on a curtain rod
2:17
and you can draw them closed or opened.
2:20
Shades and shears are a timeless
2:22
combination that will give you the light
2:26
when you want it and the privacy when
2:28
you need it. So, if you are just setting
2:30
up your windows or you've just moved
2:32
into a new home, think about going for
2:34
some shades and shears. Option number
2:37
two is probably the most common that we
2:40
see and that is curtains and blinds.
2:43
Now, curtains, there is a huge variety
2:47
underneath the umbrella of curtains.
2:50
Technically, you could say that shears
2:52
are underneath that category. Um, but
2:54
for the purposes of these combos, I'm
2:56
having these be two separate things
2:59
because curtains more often than not do
3:02
not allow you to see through and almost
3:05
always block out the light. It they may
3:08
have blackout curtains that will
3:10
completely 100% block out light. They
3:13
also have usually a thermal component to
3:16
them which helps you regulate the
3:18
temperature within your room. There are
3:21
embroidered curtains. you have um you
3:24
know curtains of all different sorts of
3:27
fabrics and weights, but typically your
3:29
curtains are going to be used as a
3:32
decorative element to bring in some
3:33
color or some pattern or some texture
3:35
into your space and also block off the
3:38
light. Now, typically when you want
3:41
total privacy and as much darkness as
3:44
you can get, you are going to close your
3:47
blinds and draw your curtains. The
3:50
curtains are going to not only help
3:54
darken your room and give you privacy,
3:57
but they also act as a really great
4:00
decorative moment. More than any other
4:03
thing in this list, you're going to see
4:05
a huge variety of styles in the
4:07
curtains, which makes them a great way
4:09
to sort of dress up your space. It gives
4:11
you an opportunity to reinforce your
4:14
color palette in your room. Textural
4:17
moments can be added in through
4:19
curtains. There's so much variety within
4:23
the curtain category that they are a
4:26
staple in most households and they are a
4:29
go-to option for window treatments. And
4:31
then of course paired with blinds.
4:33
Similarly, you can have cordless blinds,
4:36
you can have um corded blinds, you have
4:40
motorized blinds, you have cellular
4:43
blinds, there's mini blinds, there's
4:45
Venetian blinds. There's a lot of
4:47
variation underneath that blinds
4:50
category as well. Blinds, as you know,
4:53
you're looking at these horizontal slats
4:55
that are running across your window, and
4:57
you can toggle the little cord to sort
5:00
of open and close them. There are a lot
5:02
of different tricks depending upon like
5:04
let's say if you're on the second floor,
5:06
you may want to open them a certain way
5:07
to obscure view up into your um space.
5:11
If you're on the first floor, you toggle
5:13
them a different way, sort of angled out
5:15
so that you obscure the view from
5:16
somebody walking down the sidewalk
5:18
looking in. You have a lot of wiggle
5:21
room as far as how much light you want
5:23
to let in and how much privacy you want
5:26
to create when you have the blinds. but
5:29
paired with the curtains, they're just a
5:31
classic, timeless combo, you really
5:34
can't go wrong with them, and they're an
5:36
affordable option as well. Whether
5:38
you're going with mini blinds or
5:40
standard blinds, they're going to be
5:42
relatively affordable. And curtains, of
5:44
course, run the gamut. You can find
5:46
panels of curtains for $9.99 all the way
5:49
up to hundreds and hundreds of dollars.
5:51
So, there's really a space for everyone
5:53
within this combo. So, if you're just
5:55
starting out, think about a basic
5:58
curtains and blinds combo for your
6:00
windows. And last but not least is a
6:03
combination of drapes and shears. Now,
6:06
when we combine drapes and shears, you
6:09
usually see this done on a double hung
6:11
rod. Drapes are a heavier fabric than
6:15
curtains. Typically, drapes have a
6:18
weight to them that lets them hang and
6:20
fall beautifully along your window. when
6:24
we see people doing all the hacks with
6:26
like um what do you say the uh the
6:28
toilet paper roll trying to get these
6:31
perfect pleats to hang or you're sewing
6:33
in weights at the bottom of your
6:35
curtains to get them to hang just so
6:37
drapes do that on their own because they
6:40
have the weight to them. Usually we try
6:42
to make curtains mimic the look of
6:45
drapes but drapes on their own are just
6:50
a classic. They do tend to be a little
6:52
bit more expensive because the fabric is
6:54
thicker. It's a little bit more lush and
6:57
high-end. Usually in a hotel room, this
7:00
is the combination that you're seeing.
7:02
Drapes paired with shears.
7:05
Often drapes have that blackout sort of
7:07
backing to them as well. So when you
7:09
draw the drapes, you can expect a very
7:13
dark room, if not total blackout. Now,
7:16
on a double hung rod, you would have the
7:19
shears usually closest to the window and
7:22
the drapes closest to the inside of the
7:25
room so that you can pull the drapes
7:27
open and then you can pull the shears
7:29
closed to give you some privacy but
7:31
still let that light filter in. If you
7:34
don't need the privacy, of course, you
7:35
can always open the shears and the
7:37
drapes and have full view outside your
7:39
window. This is a classic combination
7:42
that will give you a very like luxe and
7:44
regal look in your space when you go for
7:47
that nice heavy drape, especially if
7:49
it's hung really high towards the
7:50
ceiling and create a really dramatic
7:52
moment. Drapes and shears are a great
7:55
timeless window treatment combo. So,
7:58
that's it for this video. I hope you
8:00
found it helpful. If you are just
8:01
starting out setting up your home or
8:03
your apartment and you want to dress up
8:06
your windows, but you're not sure where
8:07
to start, go with one of these three
8:09
combos, just pick a combination and then
8:12
narrow it down from there. Within those
8:14
categories, you can choose the type of
8:16
curtains you want. You can choose the
8:18
type of blind or shade that you want.
8:20
There's so much to choose from. Also,
8:23
don't forget about things like cafe
8:25
curtains, which are the little short
8:26
ones that we usually see in a kitchen
8:29
window. There are valances, which is
8:31
just that decorative window treatment
8:33
piece that goes at the top. If you would
8:35
like me to do a full video on all the
8:38
different window treatment styles, let
8:40
me know in the comments. I'd be happy to
8:41

8:43
a starting point, try one of these three
8:46
options and you will be well on your way
8:48
to dressing up your windows. Thank you
