Hi, it's Lindsay Diane from
0:05
dianecor.com.
0:07
In this video, we're going to talk all
0:09
about simple decorating ideas. Now, I
0:11
did a version of this video last year
0:14
called five simple decorating ideas, and
0:17
it got a really great response. So, I
0:19
decided, let me follow up and give you
0:21
five more simple decorating ideas. These
0:24
are things that anybody can do. Usually,
0:27
you have all of the items you already
0:28
need in your home. They're easy, quick
0:32
to execute, and they can really make a
0:35
big difference in your space. So, let's
0:37
get started with five more simple
0:40
decorating ideas. I will leave the link
0:42
for the original video in the
0:44
description box below if you'd like to
0:46
watch that after this one. Let's get
0:48
started. Number one is to layer
0:51
textiles. Think about your furniture and
0:54
think about adding even just one
0:56
additional layer to it. So your sofa for
1:00
instance, go ahead and add on a nice
1:04
chunky knit throw blanket, something
1:06
with a little bit of texture to it. You
1:08
can also layer in pillows. Add
1:11
decorative pillows that are varying
1:12
sizes. Maybe cluster three together on
1:15
one corner of the sofa and three
1:17
together on another corner of the sofa.
1:19
You can even do this with rugs. If you
1:21
have an overall neutral rug, you can
1:24
layer it with something that's a little
1:26
bit more patterned or something that has
1:28
a really great texture. We see this a
1:30
lot when people want to use like hide
1:33
rugs. So, things that have a nice
1:35
organic shape. So, whether it's a faux
1:38
cow hide or a faux bare skin rug, you
1:42
can layer in textures in the bedroom as
1:44
well. You can add a throw blanket to the
1:46
end of the bed or a quilt. You can also
1:49
layer in some decorative pillows. This
1:51
is a great opportunity to add in some
1:54
new textures, some new patterns, or some
1:56
new colors into the space. You can add a
2:00
layer of textile to a console table by
2:03
adding a table runner across it. Of
2:05
course, you can do this with the dining
2:07
room table as well. You can add a layer
2:10
with chargers or place mats. So, think
2:13
about layering in some textiles into
2:16
your home. You can even use small
2:18
pillows layered onto dining room chairs
2:21
to give them just an extra styling. So,
2:24
this is a really easy, simple way to
2:28
decorate. Think about adding in just one
2:30
additional layer of a textile to really
2:33
change up the look of your space. Number
2:36
two is to use mirrors as decor. Do not
2:39
limit yourself to the use of mirrors in
2:42
a bathroom or in a closet or a bedroom.
2:45
Think about bringing mirrors into some
2:47
of your main spaces in your home and use
2:50
them as decor just as you would a piece
2:54
of wall art. So, beautiful round arched
2:58
or vintage mirrors can double as art
3:00
pieces. They can create focal points on
3:03
walls without adding clutter. Mirrors
3:05
are also an amazing tool to help bounce
3:07
natural light around. They can also make
3:10
a space feel bigger and change your
3:12
experience of a space. altogether
3:15
because they are reflecting things that
3:17
you don't normally see. So, let's say
3:20
you used to have a large oversized piece
3:22
of wall art and you swap it out for a
3:24
mirror. Well, hey, now your space may be
3:26
brightened up a bit. Now, when you turn
3:28
that corner, you're seeing a whole
3:30
different uh scene because you're seeing
3:34
maybe your dining table reflected in
3:36
that mirror or maybe you're seeing your
3:38
front door reflected in that mirror. A
3:40
mirror is a really dynamic accent to add
3:43
into a space. For smaller rooms or
3:46
narrow entryways, a wellplaced mirror
3:49
can open up the space. While in living
3:51
areas, you can group multiple mirrors
3:53
together to create an eye-catching
3:55
gallery effect. There are just so many
3:58
things that you can do with the mirrors.
4:00
Small mirrors can even be used on
4:02
bookshelves or picture ledges or even
4:05
just on a console tabletop as decor. and
4:09
they can be used in conjunction with
4:11
other pieces to create small vignettes.
4:13
So, if you have mirrors, think about
4:16
using them as decor instead of just as
4:18
sort of like a functional tool to, you
4:21
know, see your outfit and put your
4:23
makeup on and things like that. Number
4:25
three is to cluster candles or lanterns.
4:29
Now, h creating a little cluster of
4:31
candles or lanterns together creates a
4:34
really beautiful ambiance in your
4:38
hallway, your entryway, your dining room
4:42
table, even your coffee table. The key
4:45
here is to choose pieces that have
4:47
varying heights and sizes. This creates
4:50
a really dynamic look. So, let's think
4:53
about candles. If you cluster together
4:55
three or five candles, you've got a
4:57
couple of, you know, um, taper candles
5:00
that are on candle six or you have a
5:02
couple of pillar candles or you have a
5:05
few tealight candles all sort of mixed
5:08
together in a little cluster in a little
5:09
vignette. You can put them on a tray.
5:11
You can just put them on a console
5:13
tabletop or you can spread them along
5:16
and have several of them spread them
5:18
along a long dining room table as a
5:21
centerpiece. It's a really, really
5:23
beautiful look and candles are
5:25
inexpensive. Whether you get the faux
5:28
candles, frankly, now the faux candles
5:30
are an amazing option because they make
5:33
them so that they flicker and glow. They
5:34
look just like real candles. A lot of
5:37
them have a wax outer coating so they
5:39
feel like real candles, too. You can
5:42
have the faux candles. You can get real
5:44
candles. You can get these from Dollar
5:46
Tree. You don't have to spend a lot. You
5:48
can find pillars. You can find tapers.
5:50
And you can find tealights all at Dollar
5:52
Tree. You can also find the faux version
5:54
of each of those at Dollar Tree as well.
5:57
So, you don't have to spend a lot on
5:59
this idea. They are a really great way
6:02
to not only create a dynamic look with
6:05
their heights and sizes, but they're
6:07
also create a great look in the evening
6:09
time when they're illuminated. So,
6:12
candle clusters or lantern clusters are
6:15
a great way to decorate your space.
6:18
Number four is to use a decorative tray
6:21
specifically for mini vignettes. Now, in
6:24
the first edition of this video, the
6:27
five simple ways to decorate, we talked
6:30
about vignettes. These are clusters of
6:32
items together, usually in groups of
6:34
three or five. And they may have stacks
6:38
of items together, but generally you
6:40
have items of varying heights. Maybe you
6:42
have a stack of books and you have a
6:44
candle or you have a little figurine.
6:48
These little vignettes are meant to be
6:51
grouped together. They're multiple small
6:52
items that are grouped together to
6:54
create a larger decorative focal point.
6:58
Basically, trays help define a space and
7:01
they let mini vignettes feel curated
7:05
instead of just little trinkets that are
7:07
clustered along a dresser top or a
7:11
nightstand. So, think about using a tray
7:15
to decorate. This is a very simple
7:18
decorative accent. They come in again
7:21
all different shapes and sizes just like
7:24
mirrors. In fact, you can use mirrors as
7:27
trays as well. But think about a tray.
7:30
You know, you can have a wooden tray,
7:32
you can have a round tray, you can have
7:33
an oval tray, you can have a rectangular
7:36
metal tray. There are so many different
7:39
finishes available for trays. You can
7:42
find one in any shape or size you can
7:45
imagine. So, think about using these in
7:49
your home to help cluster some mini
7:51
vignettes so that you can create little
7:53
decorative moments in places where it
7:57
would otherwise look clustered if you
7:59
put all these little small things on a
8:02
tabletop or a surface. So, for instance,
8:04
if you had a candle and, you know, a
8:08
book and a little figurine and you try
8:10
to put it on a small ottoman or a foot
8:13
stool, it's it's going to look silly
8:15
without something to anchor it. This is
8:17
where the tray really comes into play.
8:19
Now, you do not have to put a vignette
8:22
on top of a tray. It's just a tried
8:25
andrue method for decorating, but you
8:28
can let the tray stand alone if you
8:30
really want to, or you can have one
8:32
singular item on that tray. Number five
8:35
is picture ledges. Now, picture ledges
8:39
are very, very versatile. They are
8:42
skinny, they are unobtrusive, and you
8:46
can put them in just about any place in
8:49
your home. Picture ledges work well in
8:53
small spaces like bathrooms and hallways
8:56
or above sideboards. They create both a
9:00
vertical interest and a flexibility
9:02
because they will hold a variety of
9:04
things. A lot of times when we think of
9:06
picture ledgers, that's all we think of
9:07
is pictures. But you don't have to just
9:11
use a picture ledge to create a gallery
9:14
wall. You can use this to display
9:16
collections. You can use it to display
9:18
books. You can put together little
9:20
vignettes that are themed along a
9:23
picture ledge. You can also use a
9:25
picture ledge behind a sofa in lie of a
9:28
sofa table. So it will create a sort of
9:32
um horizontal plane that defines that
9:35
furniture area without it being an
9:38
actual tabletop that is sitting behind
9:41
the sofa itself. You can mix in artwork
9:45
with small sculptures, vases, candles,
9:48
and books to create a dynamic layered
9:51
look with picture ledges. Of course, you
9:54
can use photographs or you can use
9:57
different types of artwork. This is a
10:00
really great tool to decorate with,
10:02
particularly when you have pieces that
10:05
are of varying sizes. Now, of course,
10:08
everything is going to be sort of a
10:10
shallow profile that goes on this
10:12
picture ledge, right? We're not going to
10:13
have a 6-in vase sitting on here. But
10:17
for smaller decorative accents that
10:19
people tend to have, you can use a
10:21
picture ledge in the same way that you
10:23
would use a decorative tray to sort of
10:26
cluster smaller items together to make a
10:28
vignette. You can use the picture ledge
10:31
to do the same thing, except you can
10:33
stack multiple picture ledges and create
10:37
a really, really dramatic decorative
10:40
moment and a decorative focal point just
10:43
by layering multiple vignettes one on
10:45
top of the other. So, the sky's is
10:47
really the limit when it comes to
10:48
picture ledges. And they are very simple
10:50
to decorate with. They are a very
10:53
inexpensive piece to pick up. They
10:54
usually come in sets of two or three.
10:57
Again, they might come white or black or
11:00
in a wood finish. I don't see too many
11:03
metal pitcher ledges, but that's not to
11:04
say they don't exist, but they are
11:08
coming in lots of different styles and
11:10
thicknesses and have different types of
11:12
sort of lips on them. So, think about
11:14
looking for a picture ledge the next
11:16
time you are doing some wall decor
11:19
because they are a really fantastic way
11:22
to create a dynamic look with some
11:25
smaller objects, some books, some
11:28
photos, some artwork. Really, anything
11:32
small that you have, you can create a
11:34
really upgraded and elevated look by
11:37
using the picture ledges to display
11:39
them. So, that's it for this video on
11:42
five more simple decorating ideas. I
11:44
