Hi, it's Lindsay Dian from diannedecor.com. Today, let's talk about how to declutter your home the
0:08
quick and easy way. In this video, we'll talk about which rooms to target, what items to look
0:14
for and go through, and the easy questions to ask yourself to be able to decide in an instant
0:20
whether you should keep the item or get rid of it. I call this the quick two-question declutter
0:26
method because I'm only asking myself two things. Number one, have I used it in the past year
0:32
And if not, is it of sentimental value? When you think about decluttering an entire home
0:40
it can be totally overwhelming. But the fact of the matter is there are only six spaces in your
0:45
home that really accumulate clutter and items that need to be purged on a regular basis
0:52
So let's start by going through each one of those rooms. The first room to tackle is the bedroom
0:59
Go through your clothing, your shoes, your accessories. That's your hats, your belts, your scarves
1:06
Go through handbags and also go through your nightstand drawers. I find clothing to be one of the easiest things to go through and make the biggest impact on a space, especially a closet or drawers
1:20
Clothing is bulky and it takes up a lot of room. It occupies hangers
1:24
And if you haven't worn something in a year, just go ahead and donate it
1:28
There are always going to be opportunities to buy something fresh for an occasion
1:33
I wouldn't hang on to anything. Unless it's a very expensive garment, I would not hang on to it for more than two years
1:40
if I haven't worn it. It's just taking up space. Items that hold sentimental value are few and far between when it comes to clothing
1:48
that's usually like a wedding dress or maybe something vintage that got passed down to you
1:54
So if you haven't worn it in a year, go ahead and donate it or put it in a long-term storage
2:01
solution. There is no piece of clothing that should be just hanging in your closet for five
2:05
or six or seven years collecting dust. Get it in a nice vacuum-sealed, waterproof storage bag
2:13
and get it packed away someplace else so that it's not taking up precious real
2:18
estate in your closet or in your dresser. The kitchen is the next room that you want to declutter. Again
2:24
this is really easy when you're just asking yourself, have you used it in a year
2:29
Because there are not many sentimental items inside of a kitchen You know it a very functional utilitarian sort of space So it works it functions it helps you do something or it doesn Here the list for the kitchen
2:46
You'll want to go through all of your pots, your pans, your cutting boards, your specialty cookware
2:54
So those are appliances like a George Foreman grill or an air fryer, cooking utensils
3:01
your big spoons your slotted spoons your spatulas your tongs all of those items go through them you
3:10
really only need one of each two at the absolute most anything beyond that is just taking up space
3:19
so go ahead and donate it cookbooks and pantry food items again those non-perishable items
3:26
are also things that tend to accumulate over time. So get rid of any of your non-perishable
3:33
canned goods that are expired or you're not using. Donate them or trash them. The same with cookbooks
3:40
So much of our lives is digital now and I know if you grew up in a time before the internet
3:48
and before, you know, allrecipes.com, we had these big giant cookbooks. But odds are you may
3:56
have had six or maybe 10 favorite recipes in a book full of 500 and that book is just sitting
4:03
there taking up space. Go ahead and get rid of it. You could always find a recipe for something
4:08
Home office declutter. Whether you have a home office or not, odds are you have office supplies
4:14
in your home and you should go through and declutter them wherever they are. Here's the
4:19
list of items to go through in a home office. Electronics, headphones, keyboards, mice, three
4:29
hole punches, any other specialty paper goods like special labels that you wanted to print or
4:36
anything like that. Go through them all. Label makers, mouse pads, power strips, and cables
4:45
As far as paper declutter is concerned, old statements, water bills, invoices, tax returns, those I would assume you have put away in a filing cabinet somewhere
4:59
If you don't, I highly recommend the Freedom Filer system. It's fantastic for keeping your things organized, and it's like a self-purging system
5:10
So you know that there are certain things that you would only keep for two years once you get to that point you go through and you declutter old statements The little freedom filer system I have found works really well
5:21
But of course you can create your own filing system. But the fact that it's color coded, it's easy
5:26
I've used it for years and years and years. I'll link the website down below
5:31
It's fantastic. Whether you use that or not, you do need to go through all of the paper files
5:38
shred the sensitive stuff or bag it up so that it can be sent to a shredding place. A lot of
5:44
communities have like shred days where you can bring your items to be shredded. But ideally
5:50
you'll want to go through that on a regular basis. But if you haven't done it in a while, that's okay. Just purge all of that paper that is unneeded from your home office
5:59
The next room to declutter is your bathroom. This is a place where products build up. Not only
6:08
products but also towels. Those are the two biggest culprits in the bathroom. So here are the items
6:14
that you want to target. Start with old towels, personal care items, beauty products, cleaning
6:21
supplies, hair tools. All of these things should be evaluated. Have you used them in the past year
6:29
Do they hold sentimental value? Again, it's an area where you're probably not going to find a lot of items that are holding sentimental value to you
6:37
This is another place, just like the kitchen, where the things that are here are here to do a job, and that is it
6:45
And because we do tend to test out items, especially beauty products, personal care items, things for our hair, things to clean our bathroom or clean our home, and they may work well
6:58
they may not work well. So if you have a half a bottle of some knockoff version of Mr. Scrub that
7:05
didn't work and you don't really use it anymore, just trash it. This is an easy, fast declutter
7:13
The bathroom should have you in and out just by asking the question, have you used it in the past
7:18
year? The next step is a kid's declutter. Start with toys, move on to clothing, then move on to
7:26
baby gear in general. Now, of course, if an item of clothing doesn't fit, it's an automatic donate
7:34
As far as old toys, I mean, we're asking the question, have we used it in the past year
7:41
But realistically, when it comes to kids' toys, they change their minds so quick. They're onto
7:46
the new thing There birthdays there Christmas there Easter there all of these occasions for them to accumulate new things throughout the year If your kid really hasn played with something in six months it can
7:58
probably go. Special occasion outfits, costumes, and kids accessories like hair ties, headbands
8:08
all should be evaluated. If they haven't used it in the past year, go ahead and get rid of it
8:14
strollers, pack and plays, cribs, all of the crib related accessories, crib size mattresses
8:24
crib size sheets, all of those things. If you haven't used it in the past year, it can probably
8:30
be donated to someone else. Odds are if you're holding on to something thinking that someone
8:35
with a small child is going to come to your home and then you'll have it ready for them
8:40
If they haven't been there in the past year, they've probably outgrown it as well
8:45
So there's no need to really hang on to it. Now, when it comes to toys or other small items that may hold sentimental value for kids
8:53
I would say if it can fit in a shoebox, let them keep it
8:58
If it can't fit in a shoebox, then it should really be donated. The garage is the last place that you want to declutter
9:04
Now, if you don't have a garage, odds are you probably have a basement. You may have both
9:09
If you have both, then you might have to do double duty here. But any place that you're going to store your outdoor items or your seasonal items, like bicycles, skates, surfboards, things like that, that's the room that you want to target here
9:24
The other items that you'll want to target are your like seasonal recreational items. So skis, sleds, beach umbrellas and beach wagons, folding chairs, camping chairs, go through those things and purge them as much as possible
9:44
that's it for this video i hope you found it helpful next time you need to declutter your home
9:49
especially if it's right before the holidays when you know you're going to get an influx of new
9:54
things into your home just go through go through these six rooms ask yourself those two simple
10:00
questions and you'll be able to declutter your home the fast and easy way don't forget to check
