Hi, it's Lindsay Diane from
0:05
dianecor.com.
0:07
In this video, we're going to talk about
0:08
10 ways to use essential oils to
0:11
fragrance your home. In recent years,
0:13
there's been a big push towards using
0:15
essential oils as an alternative to
0:18
synthetic and chemicalbased fragrances
0:20
in our homes. And while diffusers are
0:23
the most popular option, there are so
0:26
many more ways to use essential oils to
0:29
fragrance your home. And I am excited to
0:31
share those in this video. But first,
0:33
let's talk about the difference between
0:36
essential oils and fragrance oils.
0:38
Essential oils are derived from plants
0:41
through distillation or cold pressing,
0:44
while fragrance oils are typically
0:46
synthetic or blended with artificial
0:49
compounds. Fragrance oils are designed
0:52
purely for scent, while essential oils
0:55
offer natural aromomas and in some cases
0:59
some functional and therapeutical
1:01
benefits.
1:03
That being said, natural doesn't always
1:06
mean gentle. Essential oils are potent
1:08
and can still be irritating if overused.
1:11
When you fragrance your home with
1:13
essential oils, always start with a few
1:15
drops and increase gradually. This will
1:18
help prevent headaches or skin
1:20
irritation or overpowering scents. So,
1:23
with that, let's jump into 10 ways to
1:26
use essential oils to fragrance your
1:28
home. Number one is cotton balls and
1:31
essential oils. By adding a few drops of
1:34
essential oils to a couple of cotton
1:36
balls, you can place them into the
1:38
canister of your vacuum to help
1:41
fragrance the air as you vacuum. So that
1:44
canister where your dirt collects, drop
1:46
a couple of cotton balls that have a few
1:48
drops, two or three of essential oils on
1:52
them into that canister. Run your vacuum
1:54
like normal and you will scent your air
1:58
as you vacuum. It is a, you know, a
2:01
temporary scent solution. It doesn't
2:03
last any longer than doing like carpet
2:05
powder or something like that, but it's
2:07
a great way to get a nice natural
2:08
fragrance into your home. You can also
2:11
place a couple of cotton balls with
2:13
essential oils on them at the bottom of
2:14
your trash can before you line it to
2:17
help combat bad odors. Another way to
2:20
use essential oils with cotton balls is
2:23
to place them into little fabric bags to
2:26
make your own drawer sachets. Now, you
2:29
can either sew your own little sache or
2:31
you can buy the little pouches, but all
2:34
you need to do is add a couple of drops
2:35
to some cotton balls, put it inside,
2:37
tuck it in your drawer, and this is a
2:39
great way to sort of fragrance your
2:41
drawers. These are perfect to tuck into
2:44
drawers, gym bags, you can use them in
2:48
your car, you can use them in closets,
2:50
any small space where you want to have
2:52
a, you know, a nice subtle fragrance,
2:55
these little sachets are perfect for
2:57
that. and they're easy to do. Next up is
2:59
DIY carpet powder. If you want to stay
3:02
away from the traditional commercial
3:04
carpet powders, it's very easy to make
3:06
your own and it's a great way to
3:08
fragrance your home. So, you're just
3:10
going to take like a cup and a half of
3:13
baking soda. I would say start with 10
3:16
drops of essential oils, maybe go up
3:18
from there. Anywhere from 10 to 20 for
3:20
about a cup and a half. Shake it up. Put
3:23
it into a like a spice container like
3:26
maybe one of those large spice
3:28
containers. I'm thinking like of the
3:29
Tony's satcheries or um you know the
3:33
shaky parmesan cheese containers that
3:36
have the shake lid or a preferated lid
3:38
that's kind of a decent size. Use one of
3:41
those containers so that you can shake
3:42
it out onto your carpet easily and you
3:45
know let it sit for a few minutes just
3:47
like you would any other carpet powder
3:48
before you vacuum. This is a great way
3:50
to fragrance your home. You can also do
3:52
this on mattresses as well before you
3:55
vacuum your mattresses. Number three is
3:57
dryer balls and essential oils. If you
4:00
like to use the wool dryer balls as an
4:03
alternative to the disposable
4:06
dryer sheets, just add a few drops of
4:09
essential oils to your dryer balls. Toss
4:12
them in with your laundry. Let them dry.
4:14
It's a great way to fragrance your
4:16
laundry and your home. Alternatively, if
4:19
you do not have dryer balls, you can use
4:21
a damp sponge and put a few essential
4:24
oils on that and throw that in with the
4:26
clean laundry. You could also use a damp
4:29
rag and use a few drops of essential
4:31
oils on that and throw it in with the
4:33
laundry while it's drying. Remember that
4:35
heat amplifies the scent quite a bit.
4:37
So, just use a few drops, maybe two,
4:41
three max for each of your dryer balls
4:44
or three max for a sponge or a rag,
4:48
that's going to be plenty. Next up is a
4:51
DIY fabric refresher. So, if you're
4:54
looking for an alternative to Fbreze or
4:57
Odtoban or any of these other fabric
5:00
refresher sprays, you can make your own
5:02
with essential oils. It's very simple.
5:04
All you need is a spray bottle, a cup or
5:07
two of water, a few drops of essential
5:09
oil, maybe five to 10, and you're going
5:13
to add maybe a teaspoon of baking soda.
5:16
Shake it up really well to help that
5:18
baking soda dissolve. Each time you
5:20
spray, you're going to want to make sure
5:21
you shake up that bottle. And then
5:23
you're going to just spray it onto your
5:24
fabrics. You can use this to refresh
5:27
mattresses. You can spray it on your
5:28
rug, your couches, whatever you need.
5:32
It's going to work spectacularly well
5:34
and it's all natural. Next are
5:37
diffusers. Now, this is the most common
5:39
way to use essential oils to fragrance
5:41
your home. There are traditional
5:44
diffusers where they have water tanks
5:46
and you're going to put a few drops of
5:48
essential oils into the water and run
5:50
the diffuser. Use your diffusers's
5:54
recommendations for the oils because
5:56
sometimes if you put too much of the oil
5:58
in there, it can start to clog up the
6:00
components. So, usually the diffusers
6:02
will tell you how many drops you're
6:04
supposed to use for the size of the tank
6:06
that comes with your diffuser. There's
6:08
no set standard for these because the
6:10
tanks do vary from device to device. So,
6:13
use the recommendations for that. If you
6:16
have a waterless diffuser, that's going
6:18
to sort of drop down a little um a
6:22
little sort of like straw or pipette
6:24
directly into an essential oil bottle
6:27
and it's going to diffuse. The waterless
6:29
diffusers are much, much stronger.
6:32
They're pulling that straight
6:33
concentrated oil out of the bottle, so
6:38
you don't need to run it for nearly as
6:40
long. I would start with the lowest
6:42
possible setting. We got a waterless
6:44
diffuser for the first time this summer,
6:47
and I was really shocked at how strong
6:49
it was to the point where sometimes I
6:51
need to just kind of turn it off. Um,
6:53
ours has a little setting where you can
6:55
set it for like one hour, three hours,
6:56
or continuously on. Um, I don't ever run
7:00
it for more than three hours on the
7:01
lowest setting because it's so so
7:03
strong. So, keep that in mind when
7:05
you're using diffusers around your home.
7:07
The diffusers with the water tanks give
7:09
you more flexibility. You can control
7:12
how much essential oils you put in to
7:14
make it, you know, a stronger or a
7:16
lighter fragrance. So, those are great
7:19
if you want that flexible option or if
7:21
you're sensitive to smells. I would go
7:23
with that over the waterless ones.
7:26
Another way to fragrance your home as
7:29
you clean is to add a few drops of
7:32
essential oils to your mop water. So, as
7:35
you're mopping your floors, you are
7:37
going to help distribute that scent.
7:39
It's no different than you're using
7:40
pineol or fabuloso. These are all sort
7:43
of scented cleaners. The difference here
7:46
is that you're able to do it in a more
7:48
natural way. So you don't have to rely
7:50
on those synthetic fragrances. Again,
7:53
you can sort of tailor it to your
7:55
liking. If you want just a light light
7:58
scent, you can go for that. If you don't
8:00
want anything that's just going to be
8:02
overpowerful and cause you to have to
8:03
open up your windows, sometimes those,
8:06
you know, traditional commercial
8:08
cleaners are just too strong. Um or the
8:11
scent is just irritating. So, if you
8:14
have some essential oils that you know
8:15
you love, you love chamomile or you love
8:17
lavender or you love lemongrass or
8:20
something like that, you can add a few
8:22
drops of that to your uh mop water. I
8:25
would just do hot water, a little bit of
8:27
Dawn dish soap, and some essential oils
8:30
and you're ready to go. It's a very mild
8:32
cleaner that is going to work and help
8:35
fragrance your home as you clean. The
8:38
next way to use essential oils as both
8:40
aroma therapy and to help fragrance your
8:43
bathroom is to add a few essential oil
8:46
drops to the corner of your shower when
8:48
you're running your shower. Um, by
8:50
adding it to the corner, you are not
8:53
instantly washing it all away. You're
8:55
giving a chance for the steam to help
8:57
lift up that fragrance and get it into
8:59
the air. It's a great way to just fill
9:01
your bathroom with a beautiful scent. Of
9:03
course, it's temporary. It's only going
9:04
to last for but so long. Um, but it's
9:07
it's very similar to the way a
9:08
humidifier would work, right? You're
9:10
getting sort of that that steamy air
9:12
that's floating around and it's going to
9:15
carry that fragrance for a while. So, if
9:17
you haven't tried it, it's really great
9:19
if you have like sinus issues or you
9:22
have a cold, think about using tea tree
9:25
or eucalyptus. Put a few drops um into
9:28
your shower and it will have this really
9:30
beautiful sort of like mentholy
9:32
experience.
9:33
There's actually one that I love on
9:35
Amazon. I will link it in the
9:36
description box below. It's called
9:38
Breathe, and it's fantastic. I use it in
9:41
my humidifier, which we'll talk about in
9:43
a minute. Um, and I also use it in my
9:46
shower whenever I catch a cold. Next up
9:48
is humidifiers and essential oils. Now,
9:51
most modern humidifiers do have either a
9:55
tray where you can put drops of
9:57
essential oils or a tray where it has a
9:59
little sort of uh foam pad where you're
10:02
intended to put the drops of oils on the
10:05
foam pad and then slide it back into the
10:08
uh device. Um either way, almost all
10:12
newer models do have an essential oil
10:14
option to them. And this is a fantastic
10:17
way to help fragrance your room. Even if
10:20
you are don't necessarily need to add
10:24
moisture to the air, it's a way to sort
10:27
of um have an alternative to a diffuser,
10:31
right? It's basically working the same
10:32
way except that a humidifier is going to
10:35
have a much much larger tank than a
10:37
diffuser ever would. So, you can cover a
10:41
much larger area if you already have a
10:43
humidifier. You don't necessarily also
10:45
need a diffuser to get that fragrance
10:47
into the air with essential oils. Just
10:49
go ahead and use the essential oil tray
10:52
on your diff on your humidifier. And
10:54
last up is a DIY garden spray. Now, this
10:58
is something that I discovered maybe 4
11:01
years ago or so, and I do it every
11:03
single year. When the summer comes
11:05
around, usually late spring, we have
11:08
this huge resurgence of like hornets
11:12
that come around our house. And one of
11:15
the things that really does keep them
11:16
away well is peppermint oil. and
11:19
eucalyptus oil. And so I will add this
11:22
to one of the large um I don't really
11:26
know what you call it. It's a it's one
11:27
of the spray bottles that you attach a
11:29
hose to. And so I will put essential oil
11:33
drops into one of these bottles that's
11:34
just filled with water. Um and then you
11:37
can spray down your bushes and your
11:39
trees and it will help keep uh pests
11:42
away. So depending upon what you're
11:43
trying to repel, right? For me, I know
11:45
that hornets, they don't like the uh
11:48
like the tea tree, eucalyptus,
11:50
they tend to stay away from that. If you
11:53
want to repel like mosquitoes, go for
11:56
like the citroanella oil. You can
11:58
actually spray down maybe the side of
12:00
your house or your whole patio area.
12:02
These are of course temporary solutions,
12:04
right? Because once it rains, you're
12:05
going to have to reapply. But frankly,
12:08
they work really, really well. I love
12:11
using peppermint oil because it just
12:13
makes the whole backyard smell nice and
12:15
minty and sweet for a while. It's also a
12:18
nice thing to do if you are going to
12:19
have like a cookout or have guests out.
12:22
Think about spraying down your area
12:23
before you know folks come and you know
12:27
your backyard will smell amazing and it
12:29
will help keep some of the pests away as
12:31
well. Um cinnamon uh is another option.
12:35
I have never used cinnamon oil to repel
12:37
ants, but the theory behind cinnamon
12:41
repelling ants is that it cuts off the
12:43
scent trail and so they aren't able to
12:46
gather. So, it's not so much that it
12:48
keeps them away. It just um sort of
12:52
makes it harder for them to sort of
12:53
gather into one space and find one
12:56
another to start to create like a little
12:58
colony mount. So, I have found that this
13:01
does work well when I sprinkle cinnamon
13:04
in um my kids like sandbox. I used to do
13:07
that and we never had an issue with ants
13:10
in the sandbox. Despite us having issues
13:12
with fire ants all over the yard, they
13:14
were never in the sandbox. So, um I
13:18
think that cinnamon oil probably will
13:20
work well. Again, it's a temporary
13:22
solution cuz when you're mixing it with
13:24
water and you're spraying it outside,
13:26
once it rains, it's going to be washed
13:28
away and you'll have to reapply. But if
13:31
you want to find a, you know, a chemical
13:34
free option for pest control, give
13:38
essential oils a try in your yard.
13:40
That's it for this video. Those are 10
13:42
ways to use essential oils to fragrance
13:45
your home. I hope you found this
