0:01
i'm older but I'm not old Gosh you think
0:04
about the power of language and how much
0:05
difference a word can make And I read
0:08
something the other day that said I'm 75
0:10
and it said the elderly man who was 61
0:13
years old uh got hit in the crosswalk or
0:16
something like that Oh now it's how the
0:17
language we use It's elderly So I was
0:20
thinking about how my parents did or did
0:22
not prepare me for growing old or going
0:24
along in life One of some of the things
0:26
that they could have said one of the
0:27
things that would have been nice is if
0:29
they'd said how fast life goes by and
0:31
please understand that you know try to
0:34
be so present And later on in life I
0:36
found out a lot more about meditation
0:37
and things that keep you really present
0:39
to today and not worrying about uh
0:41
tomorrow and just focusing on today the
0:43
blessing it is for you and so forth But
0:45
I think another thing I think back on
0:48
some of the bad decisions I made and I
0:50
think I would have liked it if somebody
0:51
said "Look you're going to make a lot of
0:53
bad decisions in your life bounce back
0:55
from him It's not the end of the world
0:57
You will make it back through this as
0:58
well Because I look back and oh my lord
1:01
I've made some horrid decisions In fact
1:04
I used to think if I ever wrote an
1:05
autobiography the title would be "What
1:08
were you thinking?" Because clearly you
1:09
weren't But it's so important because
1:11
life is this big roller coaster And
1:13
that's what I've learned at 75 years old
1:16
versus looking back at 35 or 15 or some
1:18
of those other ages It's an entirely
1:21
huge big up and down up and down left
1:24
and right and so forth And gosh when
1:26
you're up everything's great People
1:28
return your phone calls You got lots of
1:29
friends But when you're down gosh nobody
1:32
gets back to you You feel like the
1:33
loneliest person on the earth But know
1:35
that you will get back again And maybe
1:37
the most important thing of all is most
1:39
of the lessons you learn in your life is
1:40
when you're on the down stuff A lot of
1:42
this stuff that happened to me my
1:44
parents died when I was pretty young in
1:46
my 20s My mom uh died of cancer She used
1:49
to be threatened suicide sometimes Had
1:51
some mental health issues My dad took
1:53
his own life when before I was 30 My
1:56
wife passed away when my sons were four
1:58
and 14 And as horrific and as tough as
2:01
those things were they taught me some of
2:03
the best lessons in life that you can
2:04
bounce back from anything if you just
2:06
put one foot in front of the other So so
2:09
important And they say that youth is
2:11
wasted on the young But gosh we learn
2:13
these lessons And it's if you just
2:15
remember that every day will get better
2:17
it just don't focus on just this hour
2:20
Just think about it'll get better
2:21
tomorrow and the next day and so forth
2:23
And when I was about 25 years old I
2:26
asked this question That was 50 years
2:28
ago And it's the same question I've had
2:30
for 50 years Why don't people take
2:31
better care of themselves i've never got
2:34
it You got one body one heart two lungs
2:36
two kidneys one brain and yet we abuse
2:39
the heck out of them And sometimes I
2:41
thought to myself just imagine if you
2:43
could interview the organs He
2:44
interviewed the organs of a smoker and
2:46
they put the microphone up to the lungs
2:48
They go "Look we're choking down here
2:49
We're doing the best we can but you're
2:51
putting all this smoke in here and I'm
2:52
trying to get the blood back into the o
2:54
the oxygen back into the blood You're
2:56
putting all this smoke in here you know
2:58
or the kidneys or the liver of a drinker
3:00
Why are you putting all this booze in
3:01
here i'm trying to process the blood
3:03
here." So makes me wonder but what are
3:06
some of the keys to staying young and at
3:08
75 the energy I feel like I'm have the
3:10
energy of a 45 or 50year-old One of them
3:13
you hear a lot about is exercise I read
3:16
something the other day that exercise is
3:18
the closest thing to the fountain of
3:19
youth that we have I walk seven to eight
3:22
miles every single day and it's so
3:23
important I listen to podcasts and
3:25
audible books and things like this But
3:27
it really really makes a difference And
3:29
but I think maybe something that's is as
3:31
important as anything that I could tell
3:33
you about getting older but not old is
3:36
you decide You choose your attitude
3:38
Nobody rewires your brain and takes the
3:40
red wire and puts it where the blue wire
3:42
is Every day you get out of bed out of
3:45
the bed on the left side or the right
3:46
side positive or negative up or down
3:48
grateful or ungrateful whatever it might
3:50
be But you get to decide It's so
3:52
important And you make that choice every
3:54
single day So and watch your language
3:57
too You got two ears and one mouth So
3:59
your mouth talks and your ears hear it
4:01
And that's why when people say "Well
4:03
you're you're old." I go "No I'm not old
4:04
I'm older." There's a huge difference
4:06
and and watch this selft talk about I'm
4:09
terrible with this I haven't I don't
4:11
have a good memory and you say that your
4:12
ears here your brain processes it and
4:14
sure enough you will not have a good
4:15
memory so very very important to but I
4:18
think also is again I look back on the
4:20
75 years I don't really think about it
4:23
too much until I walk by something
4:24
called a mirror because when your eyes
4:26
are looking out and you don't see
4:28
yourself you just see the world you
4:30
forget sometimes you're that age and I
4:31
notic especially with the opposite sex I
4:34
saw somebody say say a sign something
4:36
like when did I become invisible i used
4:39
to get people checking me out once in a
4:40
while Not anymore Not very often And so
4:44
you remember that when you see that
4:45
mirror oh that's right I am that age So
4:48
anyway but let me wrap up with this
4:50
question I'd like you to think about and
4:51
that is is what do you know now you
4:53
would have liked to known at 18 that
4:54
would have helped you because it can
4:56
give you the direction on things You've
4:58
got all this wisdom now So whatever age
5:00
you are and everything you've learned
5:02
think about what are some of those
5:03
things and then work towards that I
5:06
think one of the biggest things for me
5:08
is that I didn't realize how tough life
5:10
was going to be But it also made me
5:12
learn how to process problems and issues
5:14
and challenges and hurdles I had to
5:16
overcome and thinking about more than
5:18
anything as I look back on my life There
5:20
was just many things I got through going
5:22
through them at the time Brutal and but
5:25
man if you just process it and just one
5:27
day at a time one you hear that many
5:29
many times How do you eat an elephant
5:31
one bite at a time and so forth But just
5:33
one step after as you know I'm a big
5:35
proponent of the gratitude journal That
5:36
makes a big difference But you can learn
5:38
from those mistakes You can learn from
5:40
those boneheaded moves And then you'll
5:42
apply that to the future And I still
5:44
make mistakes I don't make nearly as
5:46
many mistakes as I did when I was
5:48
younger So that's something to think
5:50
about So think about that What do you
5:51
know today you would have liked to know
5:52
at 18 that would have helped you think
5:54
about that I'm that gratitude guy
5:56
Remember be grateful and never quit
