0:01
it might not look like it but this is 75
0:04
mil off the coast of Ireland and you're
0:06
aboard the famous diver support vessel
0:09
Darkstar the reason we're here is
0:12
because 120 M below us there's a massive
0:15
wreck showing on the seabed survey it's
0:18
so far offshore and so deep that it'll
0:21
never have been dived before we're all
0:24
hoping that it's going to be the missing
0:26
liner hus mamora requisitioned by the
0:30
roal Navy and then sunk in 1918 by
0:34
u64 I'm lucky enough to be one of the
0:37
first divers in although we're given the
0:39
job of making sure that the lazy shot
0:55
water conditions look great
1:03
even though I've got my scooter it's
1:05
still going to take me a long time to
1:07
get down to 120 M as we go deeper the
1:11
water starts to change color you can see
1:13
it getting darker in the video but the
1:16
line's still there to guide us to the
1:26
bottom the colors changed again the must
1:30
been a layer of sediment up shallower
1:32
we're now about 40 maybe 50 m and the
1:35
first job we've got to do is to secure
2:14
I'm putting the pric on the Main
2:16
shotline and the other diver is going to
2:18
take off the lazy shot and attach it to
2:21
the PRC so when we come up it'll be easy
2:47
we've still got a long way to go this
2:49
bit of the dive seems to take ages
3:34
getting close to the Bottom now next
3:37
task is to take my strobes off and
3:40
shotline these are absolutely essential
3:43
as without them getting back to the
3:45
shotline will be really difficult
4:53
that bit of admin over the Rex starts to
4:56
come into view in all its Glory
5:00
I'm Keen to get more light it's
5:03
absolutely pitch black down here
5:06
unfortunately my main torch in my left
5:08
hand doesn't work it's a real pain which
5:12
means that I'm left with only one video
5:15
illumination I do have a spare in my
5:17
pocket but I make the decision that I've
5:20
got enough light from the video light
5:22
and I'm really Keen to go and try and
5:24
find the bridge so I head off
5:48
there's loads to see down here look at
5:50
those windows just are going over the
5:53
top of them here but I'm not hanging
5:55
around I'm on a mission I definitely
5:57
want to get to that bridge
6:38
I've dived loads of really big wrecks
6:41
and one of the problems can often be
6:43
it's difficult to make sense of them you
6:45
need to find something that identifies a
6:47
specific feature and once you've got
6:50
that the rest of the wreck will fall
6:51
into position at this moment on the dive
6:54
I haven't found anything so I'm
6:55
desperately looking for something that
7:33
these Mooring ballards what could be a
7:36
mast maybe this is the bow that's what
7:38
I'm thinking so I decided to go and try
7:41
and follow it see if I can find anything
7:44
if it's the forward Mast might even have
7:46
the Bell on it fingers crossed
8:00
and then the scooter suddenly
8:02
stops a load of net has got jammed into
8:05
it you see it's there it's wrapped
8:07
around the prop luckily there's not very
8:10
much so I pull it off and I'm away again
8:33
at this point I should have realized
8:34
where I was that's clearly a prop shaft
8:37
with a coupling on it but I was probably
8:40
still had a bit of adrenaline after the
8:42
uh the net a few moments before anyway
8:47
along and that's I'm going to eventually
8:49
realize I'm actually at the stern of the
8:52
wreck which is exactly where I don't
9:15
no idea why I'm persevering on here it's
9:17
clearly Hull outside of the wreck then I
9:20
see the prop and a big mountain of
9:23
Steel clearly this is a
9:25
Stern I'm really really unhappy with
9:28
myself so turning around I gun the
9:30
scooter and I'm heading back completely
9:33
opposite direction hoping to get to the
9:49
bow a bit further along I meet the other
9:52
diver he's clearly made the same mistake
10:06
small bit of underwater comes later I've
10:09
let him know and I'm on my way again
10:30
the good news is I now know where I
10:32
am this is the starboard side which is
10:35
resting on the seabed and I'm traveling
10:37
along the side of the wreck keeping my
10:40
eye out for anything that may have
10:41
fallen off that may give us a clue as to
10:45
uh to allow us to identify it then I see
10:48
these at first I think there might be a
10:50
sting whistle but then I realize that
10:53
shells finding shells is great news we
10:57
know the memorial was armed
10:59
and if the shells almost certainly
11:01
there's going to be some guns somewhere
11:03
so this could be the first clue in
11:05
identifying the wreck
12:10
as I'm going along here you can see the
12:11
uh hardwood decking off to my left hand
12:14
side don't know what those things are
12:17
give them a quick glance move on there's
12:19
various other bits of non ferah stuff
12:21
around here I suspect I'm getting close
12:23
to where the bridge must be and then
12:31
this those are two pedestals there's
12:34
other bits and pieces around there that
12:36
one's clearly a Helm this has got to be
12:40
bridge as I look around there's all
12:43
sorts of other interesting bits and
12:45
pieces but not really very much time to
12:48
take them in and then I spot this that's
12:51
incredible completely intact engine
12:54
order Telegraph it's got the
13:00
handles been on the seabed for over a
13:02
100 years it's absolutely amazing you
13:06
just don't get to see
13:13
that moving away from it there's other
13:19
including another Telegraph head once
13:23
again there's loads of other non-ferrous
13:25
bits and pieces around it's absolutely
13:27
incredible I can't tell you how rare it
13:29
is to see this sort of stuff on a
13:30
shipwreck and it's all there it's clear
13:34
this wreck has never been
13:36
dived I'm also looking for other things
13:39
I'm still progressing towards the bow
13:42
looking perhaps you know maybe you can
13:44
Bell that would be the icing on the cake
13:46
but I'm also aware that I'm running out
13:49
time every minute I'm down here URS a
13:53
huge decompression penalty so I feel
13:55
Under Pressure to make the most of the
13:57
time I've got that's that's why when I
13:59
see this gun in front of me I barely
14:01
give it a second glance a Pity cuz this
14:05
is really the confirmation that this is
14:07
the mamora guns and ammo that's it for
15:41
I'm back at the other Telegraph when all
15:43
of a sudden my video light goes out and
15:47
I'm in the dark my torches haven't
15:49
performed well on this dive I'm pretty
15:52
much at the end of my bottom time anyway
15:54
so it's time to head back to the uh
15:56
shotline fortunately my stroke are there
16:01
way you can hear me gunning the scooter
16:04
it's great to know where that shot line
16:06
is cuz that's the route to home and
16:09
safety as I get closer I realize my
16:12
strobes which were pretty much first on
16:15
have dropped down the line so rather
16:17
than meeting the line 10 or 15 m above
16:19
the bottom I've got to dip back down
16:22
again to try and get them out of where
16:24
they've become entangled in the
16:27
wreck I'm cursing myself
16:29
this is an extra minute or two it's
16:31
probably going to result in another 10
16:34
Deco but frankly I don't want to leave
16:36
these strobes down there it's too much
16:38
risk when the shot line comes up that
16:40
we'll get entangled and therefore I
16:42
won't see them again so I do the
16:45
strobes and head for my first
16:47
decompression stop as quickly as I can
17:28
I like to get off the bottom as quickly
17:30
as I can my computer often objects to
17:33
this which is why you can see it telling
17:35
me to slow down but I reckon the depth
17:38
change down there isn't that
17:41
great and I want to get up to that Deco
17:43
stop as quickly as possible
18:16
I'm at first Deco stop so I'm going to
18:18
accelerate My Deco going to push the set
18:23
1.5 I do that both on my unit and also
18:26
the offboard computer that I've got on
19:05
well that's it that was pretty much done
19:09
just a small matter of 3 or so hours of
19:15
decompression I hope you've enjoyed this
19:17
video and found it interesting if you
19:20
have why not check out some of my other
19:22
ones it'd also be appreciated if you can
