UK smoking ban: MPs vote in favour of Rishi Sunak’s “smoke free generation” bill

MPs have voted in favour of Rishi Sunak’s landmark bill to create a “smokefree generation”. The Prime Minister granted Conservatives a free vote on the issue, with some rejecting the plan over concerns it limits people’s freedom of choice. But the bill passed its first legislative hurdle with a vote of 383 to 67. The plan would make it illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone born after 1 January 2009 and was announced by Sunak in his speech to the Conservative # conference last year.
