Hello, I'm Rbert Harri, the managing
0:15
editor of City AM and I'm here at the
0:17
Growth 500 event with Business Leader
0:20
with Peter King, the director of
0:22
business banking at Up North. Thank you,
0:23
Robert. Um, well, congratulations on
0:25
being here and being one of the UK's
0:27
fastest growing businesses. What what
0:28
are you most excited about in in the UK
0:31
business scene right now? I think what
0:33
we're excited about is that we get to
0:35
support. Not only are we one of the
0:37
fastest growing companies, we also get
0:39
to support them too. So, as a bank that
0:41
is very much focused at scaling
0:43
businesses, they are the biggest
0:44
contributor and they punch above their
0:46
weight in terms of their contribution to
0:48
the economy and we get to support that
0:50
uh in terms of their their growth
0:52
ambitions with the funding aspect. Um
0:54
but also as a founder business we we
0:57
want to support them all the way through
0:58
that journey as well. Do you think as a
1:00
founder business you're more in touch
1:02
with the smaller businesses? I think so.
1:04
Particularly in uh the industry of
1:06
banking as well um in the fact that it
1:09
probably doesn't have uh as many founder
1:12
uh banks within that industry. It's much
1:13
more traditional in that sense. Um so
1:16
yeah we were built and born out of our
1:18
entrepreneurs and our founders previous
1:20
business uh and wanting to sort of
1:22
disrupt banking in that sense. Um and
1:24
yeah, we very much build our offering to
1:27
be in touch with uh with founders. And
1:29
what what do you think are some of the
1:30
biggest challenges businesses in the
1:33
small and mediumsiz space today? I think
1:35
at an early stage access to capital uh
1:38
to be able to and access to investment
1:40
to be able to grow is the biggest
1:41
challenge. Uh because uh I think we
1:45
foster entrepreneurship very well in the
1:47
UK. Uh but then actually getting from a
1:50
startup to a scaleup is very difficult.
1:52
um and getting that support not only
1:54
from an investment point of view but
1:56
that wider ecosystem to to to sort of
1:58
get on that growth journey and then at a
2:01
later stage I think we then lose a lot
2:03
of uh great companies that maybe go and
2:06
move uh geographies and and go
2:08
potentially across the ponds to the US
2:11
um where the market is bigger and
2:13
therefore the opportunity is bigger so
2:15
uh it's sort of retaining the later
2:17
stage businesses at the same time. Okay.
2:20
And then then coming back to open North,
2:21
what what are you most excited about for
2:23
the business over the next 5 or 10
2:24
years? Yeah, I think the the two big
2:27
areas that we're growing into uh is our
2:29
business banking offering for scale up
2:30
businesses. So supporting those scaling
2:33
businesses that I talked about that are
2:34
raising money that are contributing to
2:37
the UK economy hugely um and need a bank
2:40
that understands that journey and is
2:42
there to support them all the way
2:43
through. And then the other side of our
2:44
growth journey uh as we continue to lend
2:47
to businesses is now going to do that in
2:48
the US. So in the last 12 months we've
2:51
expanded into the US uh got our rep
2:54
office license in New York back in
2:55
August last year. We've already gone
2:57
through a billion dollars worth of
2:58
lending in 12 months. Um so it shows the
3:01
appetite for the O North approach is
3:03
very much there. Um and our expansion is
3:05
is sort of going at pace. So um we're
3:08
going through regulatory approval to buy
3:10
a US bank. Um, and yeah, we're excited
3:12
to continue our growth over in the US.
3:14
Well, that's great. Very exciting. And
3:15
Peter, thank you for your time. Thank
