How will AI line calls at Wimbledon impact the future of tennis?

0:00
When you think of the Wimbledon
0:01
Championships, what comes to mind? The
0:03
pimps, the strawberries and cream, or
0:05
the splendid line callers in their
0:06
pristine Ralph Lauren outfits? Well, if
0:09
it's the latter, then your days are
0:10
numbered because as of this year, line
0:12
callers have been replaced by robots.
0:15
Electronic line calling has been bought
0:17
in to supposedly make 50/50 decisions
0:20
fall on the right side of the fence or
0:22
net. But it's fair to say that it's not
0:24
all gone to plan. This week, a
0:26
malfunction led to an incorrect call in
0:28
a match involving American Taylor Fritz
0:30
and Wimbledon organizers were forced to
0:32
apologize after sensor court systems led
0:34
to a player saying that she had a game
0:36
stolen from her. Anastasia Pavlochenkova
0:39
suggested her British opponent Sunny
0:41
Cartel had a decision go her way because
0:43
she was British, but the system had in
0:45
fact accidentally been turned off. The
0:47
All England Club initially said the
0:49
system was deactivated on the point in
0:51
question because of an operator error
0:53
and they added that they continue to
0:54
have full confidence in the accuracy of
0:56
the ball tracking technology. They added
0:58
in this instance there was a human error
1:00
and as a consequence we have fully
1:02
reviewed our processes and made the
1:03
appropriate changes. Points have been
1:05
replayed in the instance an error has
1:07
been made but changes have been made
1:09
during the championships due to issues
1:11
with line calling. It has led to some
1:13
suggesting that we simply cannot trust
1:14
technology to replace traditional human
1:16
judgment. But others suggest ironing out
1:18
issues could lead to a system that is
1:20
100% accurate. For us at least, problems
1:23
with robots means our jobs are safe for
1:25
now. Do you think Wimbledon should use
1:26
electronic line calling or is it a step
1:28
too far? Let us know in the comments
