Reeves has stressed it is “imperative” for the UK to improve its trading relationship with the European Union (EU) amid US President Donald Trump’s global trade tariff war. The Chancellor’s comments emerged in an interview with the Financial Times (FT) ahead of a crucial summit with EU leaders in London next month. Reeves told the FT she was pushing for an ambitious economic agenda in the talks on May 19, which form a cornerstone of the Labour government’s “reset” policy with the EU, while continuing to rule out any move to rejoin the trading bloc’s customs union. Speaking at No11 Downing Street, she told the newspaper: “Since Brexit, it has been harder for British firms to export around Europe, particularly smaller firms. Many feel shut out of European markets."
