Phoebe, thank you. Well, Microsoft has
0:03
warned users of Window 10 around the
0:05
world to update their software as soon
0:07
as possible to minimize the risk of
0:09
cyber attacks now that support for the
0:12
program has officially ended. Tech Whiz

Kid Austin Turpin is the founder of Flip
0:18
Tech Australia and joins us now in the
0:19
studio. Austin, thanks so much for
0:20
joining us.
0:21
Thank you very much for having me, TSH.
0:22
Why should we care about Windows 10?
0:26
Well, because Windows 10 is is now
0:28
deprecated. it no longer is being
0:30
updated. When you know when you can turn
0:32
your computer on and it runs this
0:34
annoying update, most of the time that's
0:35
for security reasons because as hackers
0:38
get more sophisticated, so too do the
0:40
defenses against them. Now, Windows 10
0:42
is no longer being updated, which means
0:43
that every computer running Windows 10,
0:46
especially over time, will become more
0:48
and more susceptible to cyber attack.
0:50
Why haven't we known about this?
0:51
It is I have to answer the question
0:54
every day. I have no idea. And in
0:56
Australia, 40% of the computers that we
0:59
we use as a nation are still operating
1:02
Windows 10. And it's no longer being
1:04
updated whatsoever. So it is honestly
1:07
the biggest it's the news story that I
1:10
can't believe isn't being shown around
1:11
the world.
1:12
So what does that expose us to? How
1:14
susceptible are we by not having this
1:17
effective anymore?
1:18
Well, it'll get worse over time. So
1:20
technology is improving at a rapid rate
1:22
and things are getting more and more
1:23
difficult to understand as we move into
1:26
the future hackers cyber attacks get
1:28
more sophisticated and as we all know
1:30
Australia loves a cyber attack and it
1:31
happens seemingly every month at this
1:33
point and so it means that as we move
1:36
forward the risk is going to increase so
1:38
perhaps today perhaps not tomorrow but
1:41
in 6 months in a year as the software
1:44
Windows 10 doesn't keep up with new
1:45
risks being invented being innovated it
1:48
means that the risk will mount and mount
1:51
and mount and it's already happened.
1:53
It's just going to get worse.
1:54
So, we're basically unprotected.
1:56
We are unprotected and we've been left
1:58
in the dust. We've been left to fend for
1:59
ourselves. So, if you're running Windows
2:01
10 effectively, you you really been left
2:05
to your own devices here is what's
2:06
happened.
2:07
So, is there a Windows 11 like how what
2:10
software do we update to make sure
2:12
especially at home that we are guarded
2:15
and not vulnerable to serious cyber
2:16
attacks? So the answer is that we need
2:18
to be operating on software which is
2:20
being uh regularly updated like Windows
2:22
11 is still under current support for
2:24
sure and Windows 11's been around for
2:27
quite a few years now. So most people
2:29
are actually on Windows 11 but there is
2:32
still quite a big minority as I said in
2:34
Australia it's it's almost 40% there
2:36
that is running Windows 10. So it's
2:38
urgent that we get onto Windows 11 as a
2:41
nation and frankly it's been made a lot
2:42
more difficult than it really needs to
2:44
be. I mean, it's actually quite
2:45
difficult to know if you're running
2:47
Windows 10, Windows 11. The layman
2:49
really doesn't know. And so, that's why
2:51
I have to answer the question every day
2:52
to protect even my my parents, my
2:54
grandparents, my friends, uncles,
2:56
everybody. They have no nobody seems to
2:58
know at all.
2:59
And also major companies.
3:01
Absolutely. That's where the biggest
3:02
risk lies. As you can imagine, uh cyber
3:04
cyber criminals are not attacking
3:06
generally. They're not attacking
3:08
individuals. They the big juicy target
3:10
for them is corporate. So, we have a lot
3:12
of corporates. We're seeing e-waste
3:14
being thrown out on mass. This is the
3:16
biggest creator of electronic waste in
3:18
human history. Um, and so corporates are
3:21
throwing out hundreds, thousands of
3:23
devices which do not support Windows 11.
3:25
That's what we're seeing at the moment.
3:26
It's such a massive story. Austin, thank
3:28
you so much for joining us to shed
3:29
similar. Really appreciate it. Thank
3:31
you.
