The Secret Service has dismantled a
0:02
telecommunications threat right here in
0:04
the New York State tri-state area.
0:06
All right, we're breaking it down this
0:07
morning with Good Day wakeup banker Dan
0:09
Bones. What do you know so far?
0:10
Well, Rosanna and Kurt, some security
0:12
experts are saying they've never seen a
0:15
network as extensive as this before. And
0:17
this morning, the Secret Service
0:19
revealing a major security bust right
0:21
here in New York. a covert network of
0:24
devices capable of shutting down cell
0:26
service right as the UN General Assembly
0:29
is underway. Unclear if those two things
0:30
are connected, but it is a possibility.
0:33
And we have brand new images into our
0:35
newsroom this morning. These are the
0:37
devices federal agents say could have
0:39
disabled cell towers and essentially
0:42
shut down the cellular network in New
0:44
York City. That's worth repeating.
0:46
Federal agents this morning announcing
0:48
they located multiple devices capable of
0:51
shutting down cell service in the city.
0:53
Massive implications of course. Here are
0:55
the details as we know them. Inside
0:57
several locations, agents found
0:59
thousands of networked cellular devices.
1:02
That's how they describe them.
1:04
Concentrated within 35 miles of the UN
1:06
General Assembly, of course, now
1:08
underway here in New York. President
1:09
Trump in the city this morning.
1:11
Officials say the system allowed
1:13
anonymous encrypted communications
1:15
between criminal and foreign actors and
1:17
could have caused massive disruption to
1:20
government and emergency communications.
1:22
Some experts say this network could have
1:24
sent as many as a million text messages
1:26
a minute, potentially disrupting all
1:28
kinds of issues here. The special agent
1:30
in charge of the Secret Service New York
1:32
Field actually put out a video just a
1:35
few minutes ago. And take a look at what
1:36
he says here. This network had the
1:39
potential to disable cell phone towers
1:41
and essentially shut down the cellular
1:43
network in New York City. These devices
1:45
were concentrated within 35 miles of the
1:48
global meeting of the United Nations
1:50
General Assembly now underway in New
1:52
York City. Given the timing, location,
1:55
and proximity and potential for
1:58
significant disruptions to the New York
1:59
Telecom system, we move quickly to
2:02
disrupt this network.
2:05
And again, that is the special agent in
2:07
charge of the New York field office of
2:09
the Secret Service. So, how did this all
2:10
start? The Secret Service says the
2:12
investigation actually began in the
2:13
spring. So, a couple months ago, after
2:15
what they described as imminent
2:17
telecomun telecommunications threats
2:19
were directed at senior US officials.
2:22
Well, with the help from federal, state,
2:24
and local partners, including the NYPD,
2:26
the network was traced to the tri-state
2:28
area. a forensic examination of data
2:30
equivalent to about a 100,000 cell
2:32
phones now underway. What does that
2:34
means? It means they're taking a look at
2:35
a 100,000 cell phones trying to get to
2:37
the bottom of this thing. The early
2:39
analysis showing links between foreign
2:41
networks and individuals already known
2:43
to federal law enforcement. Now, at this
2:45
point, we want to emphasize no arrests
2:47
have been announced. Possible they could
2:49
have happened, not yet been made public.
2:51
The agency calls this an open and active
2:54
investigation. Again, just to recap,
2:55
because I know it's a lot of information
2:57
that we're giving you here, the Secret
2:58
Service dismantled a massive hidden
3:00
telecom network near the United Nations,
3:03
near New York City that could have
3:04
crippled New York cell service. And now
3:07
investigators are racing to find out who
3:09
built it and then why they built it.
