could robots end up stocking the shelves
0:05
of your local grocery store don't laugh
0:08
it could be happening very
0:10
soon Canadian Grocers are hauling in
0:13
record profits these days but that
0:15
doesn't mean they're not looking to
0:17
still cut costs I recently talked to
0:19
Canada's food Professor Dr silvin
0:21
charaba he says he expects Grocers to
0:24
start employing AI powered robots across
0:28
the country
0:31
instead of running a grocery store with
0:33
80 fdes fulltime employees they can
0:36
actually bring that number down to say
0:38
50 or 55 instead and and the way to do
0:42
that is to use more automation Robotics
0:45
and AI you can do that now by getting
0:49
robots to fill shells this isn't some
0:52
science fiction scenario the robots in
0:55
these videos are very real in fact
0:57
they're already working at grocery
0:59
stores in multiple countries with Fresh
1:02
Products uh inventory can turn twice
1:05
three times a day if you can actually
1:08
get someone else or something else to do
1:10
that instead of a human uh your costs
1:13
become much more predictable we want we
1:17
want work the talk about automating
1:19
grocery roles was reignited when workers
1:21
at 27 Metro Stores in the Toronto area
1:24
recently walked off the job demanding
1:26
higher wages and more full-time
1:28
positions but the impact of that walkout
1:31
could be felt Nationwide everyone is
1:33
paying close attention to what's
1:35
happening with Metro right now because
1:39
uh I think everyone knows that Optics
1:40
are against grossers right now and uh
1:44
and employees have a lot of political
1:46
Capital they could win this thing could
1:48
they could actually get more money and
1:51
everyone wants that the problem is that
1:53
business models can't accommodate higher
1:57
wages so uh grossers will have to make a
2:00
decision in terms of how to manage
2:01
stores moving forward using AI things
2:04
like that with that in mind do you see
2:06
this spreading to other uh Grocers oh
2:09
yes absolutely and that's why every
2:12
other Grocer in this country is paying
2:14
close attention to what's going on in
2:16
Toronto right now because it will it
2:18
could actually have a ripple effect on
2:20
the entire sector aside from turning to
2:23
AI to cut costs grossers do have one
2:25
other option to help cover Rising labor
2:28
costs that would be hiking crisis Char
2:31
admits this is a possibility although a
2:33
very unpopular one Richard southern city
