In this video, we're going to do French
0:02
knots. So, here are some that are used
0:03
in my book where I've just used them as
0:06
just a bit of a background, really. And
0:08
I've done different sized ones, and I'm
0:09
going to do that in this video. If
0:11
you've been frightened of French knots,
0:13
don't be. They can be a little bit
0:14
tricky, but I'm going to show you how
0:15
straightforward they really are.
0:18
So, you're going to need a needle with a
0:19
large eye so that your embroidery thread
0:23
some scissors, and some fabric, and
0:25
obviously some embroidery thread.
0:27
So, I'm going to use it whole. You could
0:29
divide it if you wanted smaller, but I'm
0:31
going to use the whole thing, all six
0:34
And I'm going to thread the needle, and
0:36
I like to wrap it round tight,
0:39
and then push it through the eye.
0:41
And I have put a knot in the end of my
0:43
needle so it doesn't pull through the
0:46
So, you want one of those as well.
0:49
Now, come up through your fabric
0:52
wherever you want your French knot. So,
0:54
I'm going to start at the beginning of
1:03
what you need to do is take hold of the
1:05
thread in the hand that you don't have
1:09
and then you're going to wrap the thread
1:12
around your needle as many times as you
1:14
like. Now, you'll see I did it three
1:16
times there. You can do it two, you can
1:20
Now, what you do is you keep hold of the
1:22
thread and keep it taut. Not so taut
1:25
your needle doesn't fit through, which
1:27
is what I'm doing here. Look, I've got
1:28
it really tight and I can't get the
1:31
So, you don't want it too tight, but you
1:34
do want to hold on to that thread
1:37
until the needle's nearly through, till
1:38
the thread's nearly through, sorry.
1:41
So, we're going to do another.
1:43
So, we're going to come up,
1:45
and then take the yarn,
1:48
wrap it round the needle,
1:51
this time we'll do it twice,
1:53
and then put the needle back down
1:54
through the fabric next to where you
1:56
came up. Now, common problem is going
1:59
back down the same hole and your knot
2:01
So, make sure you go down next to where
2:06
and that you hang on to that thread to
2:09
keep some tension in it.
2:11
Now, do play around with different
2:13
sizes, which is why I'm doing along this
2:17
And you take your thread, wrap it round,
2:20
and this time we'll just do one.
2:23
Once round. Now, you'll see me keep
2:25
letting go of the thread. That's purely
2:26
cuz I'm having to pick the fabric up cuz
2:28
I'm trying to keep this all flat for
2:29
you. Normally, you don't let go of the
2:32
thread. You keep that little bit of
2:35
Not too much, just a little bit so that
2:38
it doesn't go all loose cuz that will
2:43
At the end of the day, if you have a
2:44
problem, you can just pull it all back.
2:47
You can do that with all your
2:48
embroidery. So, don't stress about it.
2:51
And a little bit of variety isn't a bad
3:00
You're going to wrap your yarn around
3:03
your needle as many times as you want
3:05
to, depending on the size of the knot
3:06
you want. So, I'm going to go four this
3:08
time, a really big one.
3:10
And then put the needle back down
3:12
through the fabric close to where you
3:14
came up. Keep that thread tight and then
3:18
pull your needle all the way through.
3:21
So, then I've got to the end. How do you
3:24
As we always do, we're going to go
3:29
a few times. And if you want,
3:30
[clears throat] you can go through the
3:32
loop you've made and form a small knot.
3:35
And you've finished. But let me show you
3:38
one of the best ways I think of using
3:40
French knots. Don't worry about that
3:42
little mess. I obviously just got a a
3:44
knot in my thread and didn't realize.
3:47
So, there we have a great row of French
3:49
knots, all different sizes.
3:51
But what happens if you use Well, as
3:53
I've already shown you, they're great
3:57
But, what happens if you put them
3:58
together? So, I'm going to show you a
4:00
bag that I made that was from a kit,
4:03
actually. But, you used French knots so
4:06
much to make this beautiful design. You
4:08
can see there's clumps of them here to
4:10
make these gorgeous flowers.
4:13
Well, you can see we've got cat hair on
4:15
it because Emily helps me with
4:18
And I often use this bag to put my
4:19
projects in that I'm working on. But,
4:21
you can see that we use for centers of
4:23
flowers as well as for clumps of them. A
4:26
really versatile stitch that you've now
4:28
got in your armory. Now, I hope you're
4:30
following the series. If not, I will put
4:32
on the screen some videos for you to
4:35
You'll find lots of embroidery on this
4:37
channel, and I hope you enjoy it.
