Diabetic Alert Dog Kona Backs Up Glucose Tech

BVIRAL

A diabetic alert dog isn't a treatment for Type 1 diabetes. Just like a CGM, insulin pump, fingerstick meter, or smartwatch, a service dog is a tool. Kona can't raise Kennedy's blood sugar. He can't give insulin. He can't prevent every low or high. What he can do is provide information. His job is to alert us when something may be changing so we can make informed decisions. Just like a CGM gives us data, Kona gives us another layer of awareness. The treatment is still insulin, carbohydrates, and the actions we take as parents. A service dog doesn't "fix" Type 1 diabetes any more than a CGM does. But when used alongside technology, training, and medical care, they can help families manage a disease that never takes a day off. Kona is not the treatment. He's one of the tools in Kennedy's diabetes toolbox. - Filmed on: 2026-05-24 - Location: Perrysburg, US
