Here are two reasons why cakes slide and
0:02
how to fix them. The first reason starts
0:05
right at the beginning when you layer
0:06
your cake. As you alternate cake and
0:08
filling and the cake gets taller, it
0:11
looks sturdy and secure, but there's
0:13
nothing to attach this cake to the
0:15
cakeboard underneath. So, when you
0:16
spread frosting around it or when you
0:18
smooth the frosting, the pressure as you
0:21
push against the cake will nudge it
0:22
sideways. So, it slips and slides and it
0:25
makes it really difficult to get the
0:26
frosting neat and smooth. The solution?
0:29
Attach the cake to the cakeboard with
0:31
some buttercream, which will act as glue
0:33
when it sets to hold the cake still.
0:35
Then you can frost and decorate the cake
0:37
without it sliding around. Why do cakes
0:40
slide around even if you've attached
0:42
them to the cakeboard with a dot of
0:44
buttercream? The filling in between the
0:45
cake layers is soft. So, if you frost
0:48
the cake straight away, spreading the
0:50
buttercream around the cake, that
0:51
pressure will nudge the upper layers
0:53
over, even if the bottom layer is
0:55
attached in place to the cake board. As
0:58
the cake layers slide sideways, the cake
1:00
starts to lean to one side. To fix this,
1:03
wrap the cake in cling film or saran
1:05
wrap and push the layers back to the
1:07
middle so the cake is straight again.
1:08
Then, put the cake into the fridge to
1:10
chill and set for 30 minutes. And unwrap
1:13
it and it will be firm so you can safely
1:15
spread on your final layer of frosting.
