There are lots of watches that claim to be waterproof, but how many are tough enough to survive the rigors of Hawaiian lifeguards? The Time Concepts HLA 5502 is the official watch of the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association so you know it's tough. And waterproof to 200 meters (656 feet).
Tech expert Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ tried out the watch for a few weeks - though not in Hawaii, and not in the surf, alas - and shares his thoughts on this great timepiece...

if you're into swimming or diving this
0:01
is a watch you'll want to check out Dave
0:11
Taylor here underwater because I want to
0:14
show off the time concepts official
0:17
Hawaiian Lifeguard Association watch
0:19
that's this and this is the HL a five
0:24
five zero two and it's a really nice
0:26
watch they've done a really nice job
0:28
with this and when I say official
0:30
Hawaiian lifeguard Association
0:32
I'm literally speaking the truth these
0:34
are what Hawaiian lifeguards actually
0:36
wear and the company time concepts tells
0:39
me that they've never had a failure in
0:41
their years of wearing this and being
0:43
banged up in the surf and all sorts of
0:45
stuff never had a problem with any of
0:47
their watches one of the reasons is they
0:49
actually make them in a clean room which
0:51
is kind of crazy because that's what you
0:52
expect from super high-end super
0:54
expensive watches these are not much
0:58
more affordable which is good now let me
1:00
tell you a little bit about it but first
1:02
here's a close-up and you can see it has
1:03
that great sort of Hawaiian I don't know
1:07
I guess that's the surfer guy but
1:08
whatever it is it has this sort of the
1:10
Hawaiian ideogram unate and stuff and
1:12
it's just it's cool so it features a 44
1:15
millimeters stainless steel case and one
1:18
of the coolest things about it is they
1:19
have this really nice rotating timing
1:22
bezel only goes in one direction but
1:24
just the whole feel of it is really nice
1:26
and it makes it really easy for you to
1:28
time 60 minutes now all you do is you
1:31
just spin it so that you get the zero to
1:33
where the minute hand is right now and
1:36
then you can glance and at any point you
1:38
say oh fourteen minutes have passed this
1:40
is particularly helpful if you're a
1:42
diver and you're running out of oxygen
1:43
or potentially running out of oxygen now
1:46
it can be just as helpful if you have a
1:48
parking meter so works that way too now
1:51
the crown screws to lock down because
1:53
this is super super waterproof has a
1:56
screw case back if you need to change
1:59
battery
1:59
I think these batteries last basically
2:02
for years and years and years so that
2:04
won't be something you have to do very
2:05
often one of the things that really
2:07
liked about this is it has really big
2:10
luminescent spots so not just
2:12
the hands but all the hour or minute
2:16
points also are denoted so I've found
2:19
that even like six hours after it's been
2:22
exposed to light it's still plenty
2:24
readable enough in a darkroom so that's
2:27
really nice if you wake up in the middle
2:28
of the night you can actually look at
2:30
your watch and you'll get this sort of
2:31
faint somewhat eerie little glow but you
2:35
can see what time it is
2:36
very handy it's a Japanese quartz three
2:40
hand movement and there's date two so
2:43
it's a little tiny window but it works
2:45
you can see what date it is it's a k1
2:48
hardened mineral crystal on the front so
2:52
in my experience I haven't had any
2:53
issues whatsoever with it no scratches
2:56
no nothing and I'm wearing it for a
2:57
couple of weeks and the strap it's
3:00
rubber and take it off and show you so
3:03
it does lay flat which I like but it's a
3:07
rubber strap and it's a 24 millimeter so
3:11
you could ostensibly change it if you
3:12
want but rubber is much better than
3:14
leather for underwater use because
3:16
leather as it gets wet and dry and wet
3:18
and dry it doesn't actually last long
3:21
and it doesn't look good but this is
3:23
gonna last forever and it also features
3:26
a pretty big masculine what they call
3:29
their signature buckle I like it
3:31
actually the only thing I'll say is that
3:33
it has the two little I don't know strap
3:37
guides or something and usually I'm
3:39
watches I will cut one of them off I
3:41
don't know why they put two I think one
3:43
is plenty and here's what's really
3:45
amazing about this watch is that it is
3:48
waterproof to 200 meters how deep is
3:51
that
3:52
that's 656 feet deep now if you're if
3:56
you're diving at 600 feet you're a
3:58
really good diver
3:59
so usually divers are down to like 50
4:02
feet 75 feet and this watch is way
4:05
waterproof enough that you'll never ever
4:07
have an issue with that and go ahead and
4:09
put it back on so not much else to tell
4:14
you about it I mean it's just it's a
4:16
really nice watch oh the one thing I
4:18
will say is that it's also somewhat
4:19
thick you could see here on that side
4:21
shot here is it is a thick big
4:26
the masculine watch doesn't mean that
4:28
you gals can't wear it but this is not
4:31
some petite little watch it's not
4:32
something that's gonna be super micro
4:34
thin or something that's not their goal
4:36
this is a tough watch for people that
4:39
are gonna be getting it exposed to the
4:41
elements and obviously if it's
4:42
waterproof it's gonna be mud proof it's
4:44
gonna be you know dust proof any other
4:47
environment you can throw at it it's
4:48
gonna be just fine but fundamentally if
4:51
you're diving if you're getting deep in
4:52
the water if you're like your pool
4:54
maintenance and you're constantly
4:55
getting your hands into things
4:56
this watch is gonna work great here's
4:59
the other thing is that this one I like
5:01
with the black face and the black dial
5:03
and everything there are a lot of
5:05
different color choices so if you check
5:07
out the time concepts website you'll see
5:08
they have a lot of styles and they're
5:11
all in the same price range which is
5:13
nice now before I tell you that price
5:15
can I ask click on that subscribe link
5:17
right there really appreciate if you can
5:19
subscribe to my channel cool now this
5:23
time concepts official Hawaiian
5:25
Lifeguard Association H la-5 502 watch
5:29
will cost you two hundred and fifty
5:31
dollars at time concepts net but check
5:35
out their website because they often run
5:37
discounts and right now when I recorded
5:40
this I noticed that they had a twenty
5:41
percent discount code so that's a pretty
5:44
substantial discount on a watch of this
5:46
price I really like it
5:48
it is a little spendy but if you're
5:50
looking for a watch that you'll never
5:52
have to worry about you'll never have to
5:54
be concerned if you're swimming or
5:56
diving or getting into water or mud or
5:58
something then this could be an
6:00
excellent choice for you
6:01
this is Dave Taylor I'm gonna go check
6:03
what time it is which means I'll catch
6:05
you in my next video
