Hey there fellow thirsty travelers, Mark here with Walter's World and today we're in Lisbon
0:04
Portugal and today we're going to talk about what you should drink when you come here to Lisbon
0:08
and I'm going to start off with the most important drink for most Portuguese people and no it's not
0:13
port wine, it's not green wine, it's coffee. They love coffee here. I mean they're like crazy for
0:19
coffee like we're talking, I go on road trips for my friends, we stop like five times to get a coffee
0:24
because when we get one we meet up in the beginning, then we get one when we're on the highway, then halfway through, then we get off the highway, then we get into the town we're going to
0:31
Café, café, café. So just be ready for a lot of coffee when you are here
0:35
And they like small coffees. Here in Lisbon, you'll hear them say, Umabica, which means a really strong, small coffee, an espresso
0:41
That's their coffee. You just say, Umcafe. Okay, and you can get it with milk. You can have other kinds
0:45
If you like a weaker coffee, Carioca is a weaker version of it. You can get that
0:49
But honestly, coffee's a thing here. They will offer it for you after dinner. Yes, you have dinner
0:54
It's midnight when you're getting ready to leave the restaurant. They'll ask you, Oh, you want a coffee before you leave? And most locals will have a little espresso, you know, the bica, the cafe before they go
1:04
I don't know how they sleep, but they do it. So coffee is a huge thing to have when you're here
1:08
Now, if you're looking for a non-caffeinated beverage they love, you have what's called sumo
1:12
And sumo is a soda, but it's a fruit soda. Like there's like actual like pulp things in it
1:18
Like you feel like it's almost like a healthy kind of fruity soda when you're here. The two kinds I like to have, sumo l'oranja, which is orange sumo, or sumo ananas, which is pineapple
1:28
Those are what my kids always get when we go out to eat. They ask, do you have sumo? Okay, sumo l'oranja
1:32
That's what you're going to have. They sell it in vending machines all over. You can get it in a can, a bottle
1:37
Honestly, on hot days, that's really going to quench your thirst very well. You can drink water here in Portugal
1:42
It's no problem, so you don't have to worry about that. That's agua, actually, if you want to know. Another fruity drink is actually juice when you're here, and there's a brand called compal
1:49
and compal is like the juice to have when you're here it'll have a lot of different flavors you
1:53
can have passion fruit juice mango juice any kind you want but that's a nice kind of refreshing thing
1:58
as well so you can have that and that something if you staying at an apartment rental you can pick up out at the store put in your fridge and you good to go now let be honest when you go travel you don care about juices or coffees so much you care about the alcohol and probably the most important alcohol
2:14
when you come here to portugal to have is the wine vinho and there's tons of different wines
2:19
throughout the country i mean if you're going to the dhow region the door original there's algarve
2:24
there's different kinds of wine from all over so you get very different flavors of wine when you go
2:28
around which is great okay and if you want to know the different types there's a vinho tintu which is
2:32
the red wines i like those from the doro valley the dhal valley those are ones i like you've got
2:37
the alentasia the white wines vinho branco you have that and then you have the most important
2:41
like i don't get this other places around the world vinho verde vinho verde is green wine and
2:47
basically what it is it's it's white wine with a little bit of bubble in it and they keep it nice
2:51
ice cold and they bring it to you they'll either have a bucket to put it in or they'll put like an
2:54
ice sleeve over to keep it cold and keep it cold from this hot, hot sun so you can enjoy every
2:59
drink. Okay, so that Vinho Verde is something you have to have. Now the thing is though, when people
3:04
talk about Portugal, they talk about wine, they're like, well Mark, isn't port wine what they all
3:08
drink? Well, no, not really. I mean, everyone has a bottle of port wine at their house, but they're
3:14
not drinking it every day like they drink normal wine or beer or other things. Okay, but port wine
3:19
is something you can have and if you go to Porto, go over to Gaia side of the river and go take a
3:23
Port Wine Tour or go take one of those boat trips up the Douro River and learn about Port Wine
3:28
It's fantastic to learn about. Try it whether you like the Tawny or the Ruby. You can have that and
3:32
it's very specific which one you like. So that's why I recommend going to Port to do the tour to
3:37
figure out what Port Wine is right for you. But if you don't know what Port Wine is, it's a much
3:40
more fortified wine than you're used to. So be careful if you're drinking it, okay? That's why a
3:45
lot of times you just have it as like an after dinner drink. Another strong wine you might have
3:50
is Madeira wine. And Madeira wine is from the Madeira Islands. And the thing is, it's
3:54
another sweet wine you're going to have, fortified wine. But what I like about Madeira wine is
3:57
there's actually a lot of Mollio de Madeira. It's a sauce, a Madeira wine sauce they'll
4:02
cook with and that really really wonderful So if you see like pork or beef or anything that has Mollio de Madeira go for it And then you have Moscatel And muscatel is another sweet wine or muscatel if you prefer it a very sweet wine you might have after dinner as well here in Portugal so those
4:17
are kind of like the wine kind of things I want to focus on but I'll be honest with you when you're out and about in Portugal you'll see friends out young and
4:24
old having a beer together cervejas okay cervejas beer and there's two main
4:29
brands in the country Sagres and Superbac okay you have those those are like the
4:33
brands and when you go out you can order imperial which is like a small beer where you get a canica
4:38
which is a big beer you can have that but having a beer sitting out in parks and stuff is a thing
4:43
that people do there's a lot of little kiosks in parks you can have a drink when you're sitting there and enjoy your beer with your buddies um one thing i will mention sometimes they give you
4:51
tramosos which are these little yellow beans to snack on when you're having your beer don't eat
4:56
the shells you you like bite a part of the shell shoot the bean in your mouth and then you throw
5:00
the shell away. I've seen tourists just take handfuls and eat it with the shell. No, it's like
5:05
eating peas, but eating the shell of the pea that it comes in. You don't want to do that. The thing
5:09
is there's bottled beer, there's tap beer when you're here, no big deal. You'll notice they'll
5:13
have mini bottles because it gets hot. So they have the mini beers that literally called minis on the side. You have that. Oh, speaking of draft beer, there's also draft wine here. There's wine
5:21
on tap. And don't think that wine on tap is bad. You can get like a little jar of wine or a big jar
5:27
of wine if you want, and actually from tap, is usually a lot more affordable. And honestly
5:31
you do not need to pay a lot of money for wine or beer here because they've got good beer and good wine at good prices. Now let's get into some alcohols that are a little bit more impactful
5:40
let's say. One thing you have to have when you're here is ginger or gin-ginia. Basically what it is
5:45
it's a liquor that's made with sour cherries. Now if you go to Obidus, which is a day trip from here
5:50
in Lisbon, I recommend going. It's beautiful. I've been there for the Chocolate Festival. I've been
5:53
there for the medieval festival but you go there and they pour you a glass, well glass
5:57
a little chocolate cup of ginjini, this sour cherry liquor and you drink that and traditionally
6:02
you'd have like two shots of it and maybe some of the cherries fell in there and you drink that, eat that, then you eat the cup
6:08
If you have it here in Lisbon they just give it to you in like a little glass you have that but ginger ginjini is something you really should have I mean even if you in baiso you go down to the rosewood square there some ginger places right there and get some ginger there another liquor you might want to try is bet out and brow i like but out
6:23
because it's it's one of those alcohols those liquors you have that it has that earthy flavor
6:28
and earthy feeling that you drink it and you feel like slightly healthier afterwards and probably
6:33
the best way to have but out is if you have sangria here in portugal i know some people say
6:37
well sangria that's only from Spain no no no technically sangria could only be from Spain or
6:43
Portugal in Portuguese sangria yeah they have the wine that goes in and then they put barrao
6:47
instead of vermouth that you have like in Spain or other things but you have that barrao in there
6:51
with the fruit oh my gosh it's so good so definitely have that when you're here have the
6:55
sangria with that barrao in there oh you can't go wrong now if you're looking for something a little
7:00
more punch oh there actually is a poncha I know I'm horrible with my jokes but poncha is just punch
7:06
right and it's from madera it's made with madera wine and sugar or honey in there and you know
7:11
maybe you'll have some citrus juice you know you have that i've had it a few parties over the year
7:14
and festivals it's not my cup of tea but i know some people do like it so you might want to try
7:19
it especially if you're in madera it is a thing there um and then if you want something that has
7:23
really packs of punch like something that this is my end of meal i'm digesting i'm going home and
7:27
going to bed you've got aguardenti and aguardenti is basically like grappa in italy you know it's
7:33
like, you know, the home spirit that you make, like, oh, yes, this puts hair on your chest kind
7:37
of stuff. Yes, that's aguardente. And of course, here's one of the funny things is sometimes people
7:42
they'll drink their coffee and there'll be a little bit left and they'll pour the aguardente into the remains of their coffee, their coffee, and they'll stir it up and drink that to like
7:49
get them on their way for the evening. All right. So I hope this helps you get ready for your evening
7:54
in Portugal to know what drinks to look out for. And I'll be honest, if you're here in Lisbon or
7:58
other parts, there's lots of bar districts, there's all kinds of places you can go. Cocktails
8:02
they've got cocktails too. You want to get a mojito, you want to get a caipirinha, that's no
8:05
problem either. But I just want to kind of give you some of the traditional Portuguese drinks that
8:10
you should have when you're here and then go off to other things like the caipirinhas that I love
8:14
Anyway, I wish you all the best. Have a great time here in Portugal. Adeus
