AELLAN was raised female, but since he was a child, he told other people that he was a boy. He was diagnosed as intersex at age 29, which answered many questions he'd had over the years. He explained, "Being intersex is having characteristics of both male and female, biologically. I decided to transition because it was better for me medically and it just helped me feel more like myself. Once I started the testosterone, all the medical issues that I had stopped." He has been with his partner Chantelle for 13 years and transitioned 6 years into their relationship, she was supportive of his decision. "I never had any doubts about my relationship," Iaellan said. "She really encouraged me to get what I needed done for myself before I even got my diagnosis." Chantelle grew up as a Jehovah's Witness but left the religion at 22 years old. Now she makes videos about her experience, and has received a lot of judgement for being with an intersex man.
