PARIS PROTEST: Firefighters Face Police, Say 'We Are Being Sent to Our Deaths' | Times Now World
Sep 30, 2026
Thousands of public-sector workers marched through Paris on Tuesday as more than 170 demonstrations were reportedly held across France, with firefighters highlighting staffing shortages, equipment concerns and occupational health risks affecting crews. Firefighters joined the main march from Bastille towards Place de la Nation, where flares were burned and projectiles were thrown towards police. Firefighter Patrick said crews were increasingly being exposed to danger, citing inadequate staffing, ageing protective equipment and what he described as insufficient recognition of occupational diseases. Fellow firefighter Charles said a lack of resources had contributed to four firefighter deaths in 2026 and criticised spending priorities, while Jean-Francois said staffing shortages were particularly acute during weekdays and called for greater recognition of health risks linked to smoke exposure. The protests came two days before the government was due to present its 2027 budget, with public-sector unions demanding higher salaries and additional resources. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has said the index point used to calculate civil servants' basic salaries will remain frozen in 2027.
