FRANCE PROTEST: Far-Left Under Fire, PM Vows to Make Rioters Pay for Damage | Times Now World
Oct 18, 2026
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has demanded tougher financial penalties for rioters after nationwide protests across France resulted in 1,200 arrests and left 150 police officers injured, according to the French government. Lecornu accused far-left groups of organising violence and called for those responsible to pay for damage to public buildings and businesses, arguing that ordinary citizens, insurers and taxpayers should not bear the cost. The demonstrations drew an estimated 550,000 people nationwide, according to France's Interior Ministry, while organisers put attendance at 800,000. Protesters mobilised over the rising cost of living, education funding and deteriorating public services. Violence was reported in Limoges, where the historic town hall was set on fire, Marseille, where protesters stormed city hall, and Bordeaux, where government property was damaged. Police tactics also came under scrutiny following reports of injuries among demonstrators. The unrest has intensified debate in France over protest policing, political responsibility, public safety and who should pay for riot-related destruction.
