Best bargain, although there's quite a few
0:01
that you could pick from. Derek, who do you think is the best bargain
0:06
I wrote an article on the Substack for premium Substack. If you haven't checked that out, check that out
0:11
I picked a few bargain guys, but who's yours, the best bargain right now
0:15
Who's gonna end up being the best bargain, I guess. Yeah, I'm glad you made that point right there
0:21
because the best bargain can kind of go either way, right? There's on paper contracts right now
0:27
like the one year low value deals you know they're just gonna work out, odds are
0:32
But it's those six, seven year contracts that right now look maybe, ooh
0:37
but you can see like Zach Hyman. I mean, it's a great example, right
0:40
And speaking of him, I had Jake DeBrusque's contract as my best bargain
0:48
You're gonna like that, I'm sure, Matthew. Seven years, 38 million, 38 and a half million
0:53
is exactly the same figure as Zach Hyman's contract with the Angus Oilers, which I thought was kind of funny
0:59
However, obviously Hyman signed his at 29 and DeBrusque is just 27
1:05
So that's already playing into the Canucks favor. Scored at least 25 goals three times now
1:12
and he averages around the 45, 47 point mark per season. But that number I think is gonna balloon
1:19
in the Canucks organization playing either alongside JT Miller who scored over 100 points
1:24
or Elias Pedersen, who's again, one of the best centers in the league. So there's been clamoring for him
1:29
about him needing a fresh start for the last, you know, it seems like almost his whole career
1:34
and he finally has it now. So he has that chip off his shoulder
1:38
and he doesn't have to worry about contract security so he can relax in that regard too
1:43
He's set, you know, this is where I'm playing for the next seven years, let's do this
1:48
And he's, you know, he's everything that the Canucks need really. It's a win-win for both
1:52
I mean, he gets to play in a Canadian hockey market again and come home so he'll be motivated in that way
1:58
And it's also one that has a high chance of winning in the near future, obviously
2:03
the Canucks, you know, a couple more bounces and they might've, I don't know
2:06
I don't wanna say ended up in the Stanley Cup final. Still, you know, he's a rugged power forward-esque player
2:13
who can score in a variety of ways and he's gonna thrive, I think
2:17
He also doesn't get recognition for his defensive game. When I looked, he had over 100 hits this last season
2:24
He had 48 block shots and 36 takeaways. I thought that was quite impressive
2:29
And we usually just look at the goals and assists. So that's super important
2:33
And I mean, in that regard, he could potentially factor in big time to the Canucks' penalty kill in addition to their power play
2:41
which you don't usually get for under a million or 6 million buck season. So I look for him to break out and potentially score 30
2:48
and hopefully get the Canucks deeper in the playoffs
