Competing Values Framework

What is the competing values framework? Well, this is a framework proposed by Quinn and Roerbaugh

It's a theory that identifies two major dimensions underlying the conception of

organizational effectiveness of leaders. The first is an organizational focus, like from an internal

emphasis on the well-being and development of people to an external focus on the well-being

and development of the organization itself. So this is a sliding scale, well-being of the

people in the organization to the overall well-being of the organization itself

Next is differentiating the organizational preference for structure and represents a contrast between stability and control of the organization and flexibility to change

So what you ended up with is four quadrants here based upon this sliding scale

Each of these quadrants represents one of the four major models of organization and

theory. Human relations model, open systems model, internal processes model, and the rational goals model based upon once again an internal versus an external focus or flexibility versus control focus Higher level of internal focus with flexibility is human relations focus that is you collaborating

well and you're doing things together. Higher level of external focus but maintaining flexibility is the open systems model where

you are innovative, you create things and you're the first to market with new products, etc

focus with a greater deal of control is characteristic of the internal process model

And this is where, once again, high level of control, very meticulous in how things are done

And then high level of external focus with a high level of control. And it is characteristic of a

highly competitive market where you're trying to outpace others in fast changing fields like

technology, for example. So these competing values frameworks tend to epitomize theories or models

of management within the organization. So once again, this is the competing values framework
