Should You Wash Mushrooms Before Cooking With Them?

Mushrooms are sort of spongy and they act a lot like sponges too. Soaking up sauce in a stir fry or on top of a pizza because of this, many cooks believe you shouldn't wash mushrooms before cooking with them. How true is that?
