this headline isn't just fantasy it
0:05
could become reality the fact of the
0:07
matter is eliminating the FDIC is a
0:10
topic under serious discussion right now
0:13
but what is the FDIC FDIC stands for
0:17
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
0:19
and was invented in the
0:20
1930s to deal with uh Bank runs when
0:24
President Franklin Roosevelt signed the
0:26
Banking Act of 1933 into law individuals
0:30
families and businesses could for the
0:32
first time know their Bank deposits were
0:34
safe now to just suddenly eliminate it
0:37
and say we're not going to do that
0:39
function anymore and give the treasury
0:40
Department uh some ability to try and
0:43
replace the money is that a wise move I
0:46
would probably not recommend that no I
0:48
think the system has worked very very
0:50
well in fact it's rare that we have runs
0:52
on the banks anymore you see Banks don't
0:54
have all of your money stored inside
0:56
their vaults it's invested and used
0:58
elsewhere if you withdraw a small amount
1:01
of cash it's no problem but if too many
1:03
people try and take all of their money
1:06
out of the bank at the same time it
1:08
causes a run and people may panic
1:11
because there's not enough cash on hand
1:13
to pay everybody's full deposits at once
1:16
but the FDIC ensures those deposits up
1:19
to
1:21
$250,000 so if the bank fails you don't
1:24
lose a penny of the money you deposited
1:27
how do we know it works well it's
1:28
happened before 2008 a Great Recession
1:32
hammers Global markets millions of
1:34
households lose their homes to
1:36
foreclosure and more than 500 Banks
1:39
would ultimately fail the FDIC covered
1:42
all of those losses through its
1:43
insurance now the agency makes Banks pay
1:46
premiums into a Deposit Insurance Fund
1:49
no consumers pay those premiums only
1:51
banks but some of the current
1:53
Administration believe the agency has to
1:55
be abolished to reduce the size of
1:58
government and also to loosen
2:00
regulations there are folks who take a
2:02
more libertarian point of view to
2:04
government and say well Banks can
2:06
develop their own insurance plan why do
2:08
we have to have the government backing
2:09
this should Banks should be required to
2:11
set up some kind of an insurance company
2:13
to back stop them I have no trouble with
2:16
that being investigated but again the
2:18
system that we have now I think has
2:20
worked very very well we signed some
2:22
executive orders now the FDIC can't be
2:25
abolished with just the stroke of a pen
2:27
as an executive order Congress has to
2:30
get involved will Congress go along with
2:32
something like this do you think oh I
2:34
would I would guess not I'd be highly
2:36
surprised even with a republican
2:38
majority in both the houses that uh that
2:40
that would be passed self Financial
2:42
experts believe if the FDIC is abolished
2:44
it will have a domino effect undermining
2:47
our economy as well as creating turmoil
2:50
in our lending system working for you
