players said that uh we talked to four
0:02
players in there and they said that they
0:03
called a team meeting after you talked
0:05
to them and they were bothered by a few
0:07
things. A 15 nothing run and some of the
0:09
other stuff tonight. What are your
0:10
thoughts on them calling a team meeting
0:12
and you you like to have a team that
0:13
sort of takes charge like that when they
0:15
win a game but don't like how they play?
0:19
Well, I mean that's great that they're,
0:21
you know, communicating and talk amongst
0:23
themselves and um you're right, you
0:26
know, um I think we had a 24-point lead.
0:29
they went on a 150
0:31
uh run and then down the stretch 173 and
0:34
so um was disappointed in how we
0:38
finished the game. Um I felt like
0:42
um
0:44
just the sustained energy in the first
0:46
half wasn't there, but I thought we
0:47
picked it up in the second half. We were
0:49
playing well and um just unfortunate
0:52
that we didn't finish the game um better
0:55
than the way that we did. Hubert Caleb.
0:58
You go ahead, Michael. Then Brian
0:59
Hubert Caleb has said in the past the
1:01
one thing he really likes about this
1:02
team is that a lot of guys are willing
1:04
to speak up. It's not just one person
1:06
sort of leading a charge. Is that what
1:07
you've noticed in your time around them
1:08
so far?
1:11
Yeah, I mean there's a number of guys
1:12
that um
1:15
that will speak up and um one of the
1:18
things that I have encouraged everyone
1:21
is that everyone should be a leader
1:23
within their own personality. It's not a
1:25
situation where,
1:28
you know, when I was in school where you
1:29
were waiting for the junior or the
1:31
senior to be able to speak up and you
1:33
had to wait your turn. I I just don't
1:35
think it's that way anymore, whether
1:37
you're a freshman, walk-on, senior,
1:40
starter, off the bench. Um, I think the
1:43
more voices that you hear, um, the
1:46
better your team is. So, you know, I
1:49
like the talking in the locker room. Um,
1:52
but I like also talking on the court as
1:54
well.
1:55
Frank, uh, Hubert, I guess kind of going
1:58
on the slow starts, um, in games this
2:00
season. I think it those 38 31 at
2:02
halftime,
2:03
what have you been seeing in terms of
2:05
kind of maybe the team starting out slow
2:06
in the first half and then maybe ramping
2:08
up the play in the second half?
2:10
Well, I mean, I I I don't necessarily
2:13
think we started off slow in the first
2:15
half. you know, Navy, um, they're
2:18
they're methodical in their approach in
2:20
regards to, you know, switching up
2:23
defenses, man, zone, when they're in
2:26
zone, you throw the ball in the middle,
2:27
they match up, man, they pick up full
2:29
court, three/4er court. Uh, just a
2:32
number, you know, you know, sometimes
2:35
they play football, which we means that,
2:37
you know, they don't switch any off the
2:39
ball, then they go switch everything.
2:42
And so for this new group, new team to
2:46
be able to read and adapt through the
2:49
changes, I felt like it took us to the
2:52
second half to really get a rhythm. We
2:54
got stops, we got out in transition. I
2:56
mean, that's this, you know, once we get
2:58
stops and we're able to get out in
2:59
transition, that's when we're at our
3:01
best.
3:01
Grant, hey, uh, coach, uh, you know,
3:05
Navy represents more than basketball.
3:06
They're a service academy. A lot of
3:08
those guys once they're done playing
3:09
they'll be going on to serve and for
3:11
military for four or five years. Uh what
3:13
does that mean for your program to
3:14
compete against a team that has that
3:15
mission and what can you learn from
3:17
that?
3:18
Well, a number of things. Um you know
3:20
I've been to the Naval Academy. We
3:22
played there and
3:24
was it the 1516 season and we were there
3:27
for three or four days and just saw the
3:29
commitment um that they make every day.
3:32
I've been at West Point. I've been to
3:34
the Citadel and um my wife is an army
3:38
child and so I understand the sacrifice
3:40
that all of them make um for us to be
3:45
able to experience the life that we all
3:47
live and it's an act of service
3:51
um and it's an act of service not just
3:53
for themselves but um it's bigger than
3:57
themselves and so that's a message that
3:59
I've preached to our guys is that
4:01
playing here in North Carolina is an act
4:03
of service. It's not just about you.
4:05
It's about It's about the Wii. It's
4:07
about our team. It's about our program,
4:10
this university and community. And I
4:13
always believe that you're at your best
4:15
when you um go outside of yourself and
4:19
you're playing for more than just just
4:20
yourself.
4:21
Jeremiah and Andrew
4:22
Hubert, I know you guys have already I
4:24
guess gone on the road for exhibition
4:26
game next weekend before Myers. I know
4:28
you haven't necessarily looked deeply
4:29
into those teams yet, but when it comes
4:31
to just, you know, getting outside of
4:33
Chapel Hill and you kind of learning
4:34
this, you know, iteration of this team
4:36
through five games, what are some of the
4:38
things you're kind of looking forward to
4:39
out of that trip when it comes to, you
4:41
know, like I said, building on these
4:43
first five?
4:44
Yeah, whether it's home or road, I the
4:47
one, you know, it's much different than
4:49
last year. Someone told me that our our
4:52
fourth our fifth game last year or our
4:54
fourth game was in Hawaii and our fifth
4:56
game was in Maui last year. And so we've
5:00
had five straight home games. I think
5:02
the thing that I'm most excited about is
5:04
not just focusing that we're going to a
5:06
neutral side or away from here. I'm
5:09
excited that we get to practice on us. I
5:11
felt like over the last two to three
5:13
weeks. We've been practicing, but we've
5:15
been preparing having games on Friday
5:18
and Tuesday and Friday and Tuesday. I
5:20
feel like there have been preparation
5:22
practices as opposed to just focusing on
5:25
us. And so um not playing till next
5:28
week. We've got a full week where we can
5:30
work on us and that's the thing that I'm
5:32
most excited about.
5:33
Andrew then Noah,
5:34
how much of it is of the next week is
5:37
ironing out some things and fixing some
5:39
things and how much of it is adding some
5:40
stuff that you guys haven't really
5:42
All of it. All of it. It's is um ironing
5:46
stuff out, fixing stuff, adding stuff.
5:50
Um we just started the season three
5:53
weeks ago and so obviously it's not a
5:57
finished product but um it's something
5:59
that's worked on every day. And so now
6:01
we have an opportunity for a little bit
6:03
this week to really prepare and and
6:06
change and tweak and pivot some things
6:09
on us that as I said before I'm really
6:11
excited about.
6:12
Noah then Rod.
6:13
It feels like when Caleb dunks the ball
6:15
it just gives a different type of energy
6:16
maybe than else does. Why do you think
6:18
that is?
6:19
I don't know. Um, but it, you know,
6:20
it's, you know, his game ignites us. It
6:26
ignite ignites the crowd. It it gets us
6:28
going. It's not a a verbal rahrah, but
6:32
his his game just does that. And in the
6:36
second half, the plays that he made just
6:41
instinctively just brought everything
6:43
up. and and you know
6:46
that's the type of person the presence
6:48
that he that he brings but um it
6:51
definitely comes from his game.
6:53
Rod then last two RL and Shelby
6:55
Hubert. How do you get those guys to
6:56
kind of maintain that killer instinct
6:58
when you're up 24 and play to that
7:00
standard rather than the score?
7:02
Yeah, continue to uh talk to them about
7:05
it. Um show them on tape. Um
7:10
you have to show kids
7:13
you just can't tell them. They got to
7:15
see it. And that's a part of our growth,
7:19
you know, to get to that level, but to
7:20
be able to sustain it. And that's
7:23
something that we've got to we've got to
7:25
grow and um we've got to do it quickly.
7:29
Did good play from your bench in earlier
7:31
games, but tonight didn't seem as smooth
7:34
when a lot of reserves were in there.
7:36
What did you see from your bench
7:37
tonight?
7:38
Yeah, I mean, you know, I played 11
7:41
guys, you know, and so number of guys
7:44
had an opportunity, a chance to come in
7:46
and make impact um out there on the
7:48
floor. I felt like each one of them did
7:50
something whether it was on offensively
7:53
or defensively that made a positive
7:55
impact to help us pull away and help us
7:58
win. Um it doesn't work without our
8:00
bench. I mean, we need a number of guys
8:03
consistently playing at a high level,
8:05
and I feel like we have a bench that um
8:08
can do that.
8:09
Last one, Shelby.
8:10
Yeah, just just talking with Henry after
8:12
the game, he said. He said that he felt
8:14
like on
8:14
Who is this? Henry.
8:15
Henry. Sorry. Henry.
8:16
Okay. Sorry. I'm sorry.
8:17
No, you're good. You're good. I need to
8:19
project a bit more, but just felt like
8:20
um messed up on some of the like
8:22
switches, maybe late on some things.
8:24
Obviously, it's right after the game,
8:26
but um just wanted to see if you had any
8:29
sort of explanation on that and like see
8:32
that.
8:32
I I agree with them. You know, the
8:34
communication out there on the floor has
8:37
to get better. Um the listening and and
8:41
being able to to apply the communication
8:43
has to be better. And those are things
8:47
that one of the many things that I think
8:49
we need to work on this week. and um
8:52
just being um better at communicating
8:56
and being able to execute off that
8:58
communication. And there were a number
9:00
of times that um we did not do that
9:04
tonight.
9:05
Thank you everybody. Thank you.
