Hey, welcome back. It's another Tar Heel
0:02
Tribune podcast along with R.L. Bynum,
0:03
the founder and publisher of the Tar
0:05
Heel Tribune.
0:06
Uh this is Britt Whitmire. Before we get
0:08
to our guests, I want to tell you
0:09
though, R.L. has been doing a lot of
0:11
work at tarheeltribune.com. Got some
0:13
great stories about the hot start from
0:15
the women's soccer program. Of course,
0:17
some football updates. We got that
0:19
starting quarterback stuff. We're going
0:20
to cover that in just a moment. He's got
0:22
um a great story about a podcast review
0:24
where Coach Malone turned down the job
0:26
at Carolina three times before he had to
0:28
be convinced. So, check it out at
0:30
tarheeltribune.com. Now that that's out
0:32
of the way, let's get to the moment at
0:33
hand here. Our guest is Joe Yoc. Joe is
0:35
a of course a former player at Carolina
0:38
and you'll hear him alongside Jones
0:39
Angel in about a week and a half from
0:41
Dublin when UNC takes on TCU and
0:44
heck, I think they actually are going to
0:46
let him do the rest of the games, too.
0:47
Go ahead and download that Varsity app
0:49
so you can check out Jones and the
0:50
entire gang. Good to have you, Joe.
0:52
Thanks for being here.
0:54
>> Yeah, thanks for having me on. Super
0:55
excited about the opportunity to go
0:58
full-time with Carolina and and and be a
1:01
be together on the broadcast team with
1:03
Brent Renner and and Jones and and the
1:06
whole crew there at the Tar Heel Sports
1:07
Network. We're
1:09
uh incredibly thankful and and and I am
1:11
just beyond excited to to be a part of
1:16
year two of the the Belichick era here
1:18
and and
1:20
see where this thing goes.
1:23
>> Yeah, you do an outstanding job as a
1:25
color analyst on the Tar Heel Sports
1:26
Network. So, we're eager to get your
1:28
insights here.
1:29
It's hard to believe we're both being in
1:31
Dublin next week. I don't know about
1:33
you, but I've never been and I'm looking
1:35
forward to it. Um but let's get right to
1:38
the news of the day with the reports
1:40
indicating that Wisconsin graduate Billy
1:43
Edwards Jr. will start
1:45
against TCU next week. Uh
1:47
And that comes like 11 days before the
1:49
opener. Last year, Gio Lopez wasn't
1:52
named till five days before. Um and it
1:55
sounded like Myles O'Neal was starting
1:57
scrimmages and get and he got first team
2:00
reps in the practices the media saw. Um
2:04
What what's your uh
2:05
take on all that?
2:07
>> You know, I I I definitely was hearing
2:09
rumors around that Miles had had done is
2:12
doing really well and they were neck and
2:13
neck with Billy.
2:15
Um
2:15
you know, I think both those guys are
2:17
are similar in a way, but ultimately
2:20
the experience that Billy has for the
2:23
current situation in the processing of
2:27
of what Bobby Petrino wants from a game
2:29
plan perspective uh and his ability to
2:34
take care of the football is what
2:37
they've really focused on
2:39
uh this year. And so, I just think that
2:42
it's a neck it was a neck-and-neck race.
2:45
And after the scrimmage on Saturday,
2:47
when you put all the data together, you
2:49
put the feels together, you combine
2:51
everything, put in a pot, I think it was
2:53
super close, but uh I really really
2:56
believe there's a there's an experience
2:59
factor and a trust factor
3:01
with Billy that gave him that little bit
3:04
of slight edge, but don't think for a
3:06
second that, you know, like I I do I
3:08
honestly think it could be, you know,
3:10
when you're named a starter, it's like,
3:12
well,
3:13
how far do we go with this? Like is it
3:15
if if a guy struggles a little bit, do
3:17
we let him play through that completely
3:20
or do you say, "Okay, here, you guys
3:22
both are going to have the opportunity
3:23
to play in this game." But then the old
3:25
saying, "If you don't have one
3:27
quarterback uh you don't have any."
3:30
Um kind of deal. And so, there there's
3:32
there's some I think there's some
3:34
fluidity to it. There's some moving
3:35
parts to it. But ultimately
3:38
I think there was a trust and an
3:40
experience factor with what Billy brings
3:43
to the table is what got him that
3:46
starting job.
3:48
>> And then we we've heard that Travis
3:50
Burgess is who probably has the highest
3:52
ceiling in that quarterback room has
3:54
looked really good and given that you
3:56
don't have to worry about red shirts
3:58
anymore,
3:59
we should see him at some point, too.
4:01
Don't you think?
4:02
>> Yeah, I mean I've heard nothing but
4:05
great things coming out about Travis
4:07
Burgess and his athleticism. His knee is
4:10
is all healed up. He's seems back to
4:12
100% and obviously being a freshman that
4:15
gives you a little bit of trepidation
4:16
that you want to make sure that when a
4:19
player comes in as a freshman
4:23
that they're ready. You know, I look
4:25
back on when I played at Carolina and
4:27
Jason Stanback was our was our
4:29
quarterback and he came in as a freshman
4:32
but didn't come in till near the end of
4:35
the season and by then he had the
4:38
opportunity to develop and obviously
4:39
went on to have a great career at
4:41
Carolina. So, the whole key to that is
4:45
at what time
4:47
does Bobby Petrino and Coach Belichick
4:50
feel that Travis Burgess is ready to
4:53
take the big stage at a college level?
4:57
And I think there's no doubt there's no
5:00
doubt. When you watch that kid's high
5:01
school film and you see what kind of
5:03
athlete he is, you see his size, you see
5:05
his ability to throw the football, there
5:07
is no no doubt in my mind whatsoever.
5:10
That's a superstar. That's a superstar
5:12
in the making in Chapel Hill but it is
5:16
critical to get the timing right of when
5:21
you want to go to him. And who knows? If
5:23
these other coach Billy has great
5:24
success or Miles comes in great success,
5:27
it may be a great opportunity to develop
5:29
Travis for for a season and get him in
5:32
there when you can but I think
5:34
ultimately he is a very very special
5:39
football player and can be a huge part
5:42
of Carolina success.
5:45
I I don't know how the program is
5:46
handling Michael Lombardi's paid
5:48
administrative leave and Steve
5:50
Belichick's medical leave. They're all
5:52
saying the right things, but there's
5:53
been a lot of negativity outside the
5:55
program. What's your read on the mood in
5:58
preseason camp and how that's gone?
6:00
>> Uh put put the put the put the ball down
6:03
and play football. That's my mood. Those
6:06
kids Here's what I know. Here's what I
6:07
know. As a player as a player, you show
6:10
up, you you take care of your body, you
6:13
work out, you train, you get to the
6:15
practice field and you bust your hump
6:18
and you compete with the other guys and
6:20
you get ready to play football. And so
6:22
all this outside noise of of like the
6:25
what Steve Belichick's had to go through
6:27
and and and and his medical situation
6:29
cuz he's directly on the field. Sure,
6:31
could that could that have an impact?
6:33
Because he's, you know, the defensive
6:35
coordinator, he's directly on the field.
6:37
But by golly, it's it's not it's not a
6:39
bad situation to know that Bill
6:41
Belichick's standing right there
6:43
uh running the defense and that Bob
6:45
Bratton obviously running the offense,
6:47
but you know, all this other stuff with
6:49
all the other things that go on, you
6:51
know what? Get your hand in the dirt.
6:53
Get your hand in the dirt. Come off the
6:55
football. Put your face in the fan. Hit
6:58
somebody and make great things happen
7:01
and forget about all this other stuff.
7:03
And to me, people yap and talk about
7:05
this and that and and all those other
7:07
things. And sure, it gives people
7:08
something to talk about, but strictly
7:10
from a player's perspective, from a
7:12
player's perspective, you're there to
7:15
play ball. You're there to play We're
7:16
there to get to Ireland to play ball and
7:19
that's what they're focused on.
7:22
And that gets me fired up. Good
7:24
question, Arlo.
7:26
>> [laughter]
7:31
>> You're muted, Britt.
7:32
>> Yeah, I lost you. You're muted.
7:43
>> You got Got you?
7:51
Think we got a
7:52
How about now, boys? Can you hear me
7:53
now?
7:54
>> There you go.
7:54
>> Yeah, now now I got it. Now I got you.
7:57
>> Yeah, I I'm not able to hear you guys
7:59
now for some reason. I'm sorry about
8:01
that.
8:02
>> [snorts]
8:02
>> Go ahead with another question, R.L.
8:06
>> Okay. Um
8:07
Joe, what what do you think went wrong
8:09
last season? And is there evidence
8:13
there's a decent chance of returning
8:15
things around this season, even though
8:16
it's a tougher schedule? I mean, they
8:19
were picked 15th in the ACC.
8:21
And the age of overreactions, it feels
8:24
like beating TCU is going to
8:27
or at least to be competitive is going
8:28
to be huge.
8:30
>> Yeah, I mean, I really believe last year
8:33
was
8:34
the Tar Heels football team. And you
8:36
don't want to make excuses, but they
8:38
were put in an incredibly difficult
8:40
situation. You're put in a difficult
8:42
situation with a roster rebuild. And not
8:44
only do you have a roster rebuild, you
8:47
you've also got
8:49
a roster that the majority of your big
8:51
hunkier players, especially your
8:52
quarterback,
8:54
came in not until June. And so, you
8:57
know, I understand people have to like
8:58
there's there's a lot of different
8:59
moving parts, but they were put in a
9:01
very very difficult situation from a
9:04
roster perspective and from a
9:06
development perspective. And so, I think
9:09
you are going to see or Tar Heel nation
9:11
is going to see a much improved and much
9:15
better developed football team this
9:17
season. Now, how does that translate
9:20
onto the field and and onto wins
9:23
uh with a with a difficult schedule?
9:25
I think there I honestly believe that
9:28
they are going to surprise some people.
9:30
I think this TCU game's going to be a
9:32
very very competitive game. And I think
9:37
the level of confidence that we're going
9:39
to have that we didn't have last year
9:41
offensively along with the weapons that
9:43
we now have along with a more shirt up
9:45
front. You have to understand guys,
9:48
we went into that game last year against
9:50
TC with all the circus around Bill
9:53
Belichick going to college football and
9:55
everything that came into that game and
9:57
we had a center that had only practiced
9:59
a couple days because of injuries and
10:01
I'm calling that game and Jones and I
10:03
are up there calling that game and
10:05
we we barely could snap the ball back in
10:08
a shotgun formation to to the
10:10
quarterback. It was it was floating back
10:12
there like it was a a middle school
10:14
game. And so everybody was put in an
10:17
incredibly difficult situation. I
10:20
thought they squeezed it hard last year.
10:22
You look at the Cal game, you're you're
10:24
less than a yard away from winning that
10:26
game, the Virginia game. You get some
10:28
things that go your way, you can win you
10:30
can win six ball games and with a team
10:33
that was you know put together with not
10:35
nothing against the players, but it was
10:36
just a tough situation for everybody and
10:39
now they've had a chance to actually do
10:41
what coach Belichick said that he's best
10:43
at doing. Give me a whole off season to
10:46
keep my team roster together and develop
10:49
these football players and that's what
10:51
he's had the opportunity to do and we're
10:53
going to find out real quick what type
10:55
of difference that makes when we head to
10:57
Ireland next next Saturday.
10:59
>> How about now boys? Can you hear me now
11:01
okay now?
11:03
>> Yes.
11:03
>> Oh good. Okay. Well, I I know I I got an
11:05
ex-wife who she had a mute switch, but
11:07
that's that was then this is now. I you
11:09
you you've mentioned him a couple of
11:10
times. You've talked about coach
11:12
Petrino. There are a lot of Tar Heel
11:13
fans that's a big question mark about
11:15
what kind of offense this team is going
11:17
to have under coach Petrino and I know
11:18
you've been around the team a lot.
11:20
You've seen a lot. I don't expect a game
11:22
plan from you, but I think there's a a
11:24
feeling among among the Tar Heel fans
11:27
that this is going to be a more wide
11:29
open offense. Of of based on the
11:31
personnel that we have, etc., etc. What
11:33
What is your sense of what kind of
11:35
offense Bobby Petrino is going to be
11:36
coaching this year for the North
11:37
Carolina Tar Heels?
11:40
>> Well, I mean, you go back and you study
11:42
do do do little history lesson with
11:44
wherever he's gone, and you go back to
11:46
even last year.
11:48
I mean, Elko's got a defense and they
11:50
had a playoff team in Texas A&M
11:53
last year, and Arkansas brings in a not
11:56
a very good football team and scores 38
11:58
points on them. And he's a defensive
12:00
guy.
12:01
You know, and so we're we're whatever
12:04
whatever hand that Bobby Petrino has
12:06
been dealt from an offensive point of
12:07
view,
12:09
he's always had success.
12:11
And so I I I really really think that's
12:14
where we're going to see the biggest
12:15
difference this year. And yeah, sure,
12:18
the the bottom line is from the to
12:20
answer your question is
12:22
when you can physically run the
12:24
football,
12:25
and with the size of this offensive line
12:27
and with the stables of running backs
12:29
that can elevate this at the running
12:31
back position between Ben Hall, Demond
12:34
June, Jaylen McGill, across the board,
12:37
Caleb Jackson, across the board. Like
12:38
this is a deep running back room. And
12:41
the guy who steps out, stands up and
12:43
steps out, and and really takes the
12:45
reins at that position, and they can be
12:47
a physical running football team,
12:50
then what that does
12:53
is it brings more people into the box,
12:56
it brings more people trying to think in
12:58
their minds that we got to stop the run,
13:00
and that's when Petrino goes into the
13:01
lab, and he starts mixing it up with the
13:04
Jordan Ships and the Mason Humphreys and
13:07
the playmakers that are there on the
13:09
outside and spreading the field. When
13:11
you can physically run the football down
13:13
people's throats, you can do a lot more
13:17
on the perimeters and take your shots
13:19
downfield. So,
13:20
once again, success wherever he's gone,
13:22
and couldn't be more excited to watch uh
13:25
an offense that's actually had time,
13:28
spring ball, camp, a time to gel
13:30
together and and put up put up some good
13:33
numbers this year. I I I can't be more
13:34
excited about it.
13:36
>> And then the player run practices in the
13:39
summer, which we didn't have last which
13:41
they didn't have last uh year, which is
13:43
got to help as well. But, do you think
13:46
Vitrino will be more nimble than Freddy
13:48
Kitchens was? I mean, last season you
13:50
had a running quarterback in Geo Lopez
13:53
who rarely ran.
13:55
And it this seemed like the only way he
13:58
was going to get off the field is if he
14:00
got hurt, and that's basically what
14:02
happened.
14:03
Uh it seems like
14:05
uh
14:05
Vitrino is going to be more nimble in
14:07
that regard, and if something's not
14:10
working, he'll switch it off, and he's
14:11
obviously got enough quarterback
14:13
elements to go in and out with.
14:17
>> Yeah yeah, I mean, I I do think this in
14:19
Freddy Kitchens' defense.
14:22
I think that he was dealt a pretty
14:23
difficult hand from a personnel
14:26
standpoint and a quarterback standpoint.
14:29
Nothing against Geo, but once again, he
14:30
got in he got into camp late. He was
14:33
there in June, and it's hard to go
14:35
through camp and and and a lot of young
14:37
receivers. I mean, you look at Jordan
14:39
Shipp, it took him time to develop, and
14:41
and it wasn't really till he really came
14:43
on as the season as the season happened.
14:45
It just there wasn't a lot there. So So
14:48
what do you do? So as a coach, you look
14:50
at you look at your roster, and you
14:53
think yourself, "Okay, what gives us the
14:55
best chance to win?"
14:57
And I think if you say, "Oh hey, we need
14:59
to really spread it out and become a
15:00
wide-open wide-open offense and do this
15:02
and do all these different things," that
15:04
if the personnel isn't there to do that,
15:08
it's a turnover waiting to happen.
15:11
And so what you decide to do is you make
15:14
the decision, "Hey, let's play
15:16
conservative. Let's not get mixed up in
15:19
any crazy play calls. Let's try to run
15:21
the football. Let's do the best we can
15:23
with what we got and then play good
15:25
defense, which they really did in the
15:26
second half of the season. Play good
15:28
defense and see if we can get into some
15:31
games down the stretch and find a way to
15:33
win. And they were. They were the end of
15:35
some games down the stretch where they
15:37
could have beat Duke, they could have
15:38
beat Cal, could have beat Virginia. So,
15:40
I mean, those are all Oh, those are all
15:42
games that you're just trying to manage
15:44
to give yourself position to win. It
15:46
didn't go their way. But, with that
15:48
being said,
15:49
I think once again, Coach Belichick was
15:52
smart enough to realize like, okay, we
15:55
got to do 180 and go the opposite
15:57
direction and that's why I went out and
15:59
hired Bobby Petrino.
16:02
>> It It It seems like he uh Petrino's got
16:05
the tools to have a vertical game, which
16:07
was mostly absent last year. You
16:09
mentioned Ship and Humphrey and this
16:12
Wisconsin transfer uh Tre
16:15
Kakuna. I may not be pronouncing that
16:17
name correctly. But, uh and and then
16:20
better tight ends. It It seems like
16:22
there there might be a a chance for a
16:24
more vertical game, although
16:27
he's he has said
16:29
s- uh said setting up a good running
16:31
game
16:33
has to come first.
16:35
>> Yeah, it definitely has to come It
16:36
definitely has to come first, but I
16:38
think what that's setting up the running
16:40
game, which they will run the ball well,
16:43
is I think
16:44
Jordan Ship
16:46
is
16:48
going to live up to the hype that he's
16:50
been given. I mean, when you get a cross
16:53
the board from an athletic standpoint,
16:55
from a play making standpoint, from a
16:57
character standpoint, from a leadership
16:59
standpoint, when you start
17:02
pulling down the bo- of what boxes need
17:04
to be checked in order to be a great
17:06
football player,
17:07
Jordan Ship checks almost every one of
17:11
those boxes. And I think if Carolina can
17:14
establish a solid running game, they're
17:17
going to be able to Bob between will
17:19
move Jordan Ship around in that offense
17:23
to get him to the matchups that he wants
17:26
to get in order to help him be
17:27
successful. And I think you're going to
17:29
see
17:30
Jordan Ship have a breakout season. Now,
17:32
with that being said, that comes back to
17:34
other guys making plays. That means a
17:37
tight end's got to make some plays. That
17:39
means
17:40
a player plays like Mason Humphreys or
17:43
treacherous the the the transfer from
17:45
Wisconsin, Alec Some of these guys
17:48
need to make plays, but once you have
17:50
the tight ends making plays, the backs
17:52
making plays, then you can get your game
17:54
plan and you can get focused in on,
17:56
"Hey,
17:57
they can't double-team Jordan Ship now
17:59
and take him out of the game. You have
18:01
other players make plays, then you wait
18:03
for your matchups, and then all of a
18:05
sudden, bam, you're taking shots down
18:07
field to a high-quality football player
18:10
like Ship. And I really, really think
18:12
when those other guys step up this year,
18:14
which I think they'll do, you're going
18:16
to see Jordan Ship have a all-ACC
18:20
type of season this year.
18:22
>> We've been talking a lot about the
18:24
offense. Let's talk about defense cuz we
18:26
know that Bill Belichick made his bones
18:28
in the National Football League as a
18:29
defensive coach. Doesn't hurt when you
18:30
have one the probably the best defensive
18:32
player in the history of the NFL playing
18:34
for you and some of this guy named
18:35
Parcells is your head coach in New York.
18:37
Tell me about some of the key players on
18:39
the defense we need to be looking for.
18:42
>> Yeah, I mean, obviously Malcolm Epps
18:45
is a you know,
18:47
had a breakout season last year, comes
18:50
in leading the ACC in in sacks. And I
18:52
think the thing that Coach Belichick
18:54
said about him the most is that his
18:56
commitment to develop and do all the
18:59
little things of stacking days day by
19:01
day by day. So, I think you're going to
19:04
see a much improved pass rush from him
19:06
from a guy who was already very good.
19:08
His story is fantastic,
19:11
and his development is has been
19:13
unbelievable. So, I think right there,
19:16
you're going to see, uh, him
19:18
create a lot of problems for other teams
19:20
offense. The guy that really, I think
19:23
he's going to be a star football player
19:26
for Carolina, and we called the game
19:28
last year versus Richmond, uh, and he
19:31
was all over the field, and I looked at
19:34
Jones Angel during the broadcast in the
19:36
fourth quarter, and I said, "I'll tell
19:37
you what, Jones,
19:38
we need to go get
19:40
that linebacker, Payton Sealman,
19:42
from Richmond in this offseason." And
19:44
sure enough, they went out and they got
19:47
him. That guy is a Bill Belichick, Tedy
19:50
Bruschi style, tough, hard-nosed,
19:54
finds the football, in on every play,
19:57
uh, type of player, and I think he is
19:59
going to be somebody that really, really
20:02
steps it up. The other guy that
20:05
came on strong last year is, uh, Leroy
20:09
Jackson, otherwise known as Leroy
20:12
Jackson. And Leroy Jackson, uh, is, uh,
20:17
once again, he's one of those guys that
20:19
can develop into a higher-pick NFL type
20:23
of football player. So, there are some
20:26
guys with some great depth. Jaden
20:28
Patterson, uh, I think he's one of the
20:30
talented guy in the secondary that we've
20:32
seen in a while, and they and they've
20:34
really, really, uh, hyped up him and his
20:38
ability to cover, his ability to make
20:40
plays. He's long, he's athletic, he can
20:43
run. Uh, so, you know, across the board,
20:46
there are there are some guys on that
20:49
defense. I don't think this is a defense
20:53
that is loaded with a across the board
20:56
loaded with a ton of star power, like
21:01
However, I think they've got some depth
21:03
on the defensive line. I think the
21:05
linebacker play is going to really step
21:08
up. The McDonald transfer from Syracuse,
21:10
if he can stay healthy, is a really good
21:12
football player. Uh so, I think it is
21:15
there, you know, the Julius Peppers type
21:18
of players. Obviously, they don't come
21:19
along very often, but you know, the Greg
21:21
Ellises, those type of guys. Is there
21:24
some of those? I'm not sure there, but I
21:26
think as a cohesive unit,
21:29
they were decent last year, and they're
21:32
going to be much improved this year.
21:35
>> Yeah, you're talking about Seelman, uh
21:37
Belichick called him a throwback.
21:40
>> Yeah.
21:40
>> he just has instincts, and that's the
21:42
that's the kind of guy you love.
21:44
And
21:45
what about another key player on the
21:47
defense might be uh Jaylen Harvey, the
21:50
other in position? And how important it
21:52
is it for him to be a factor on the pass
21:55
rush to maybe make it so they can't just
21:58
focus on Abu Jahweh.
22:00
>> Yeah, I I think like they've had high
22:02
praises for Jaylen Harvey, and I think
22:03
that
22:04
that if you can get that second pass
22:07
rusher, you know, last year, you know,
22:09
Tyler Thompson had done a good job, but
22:11
if you can get that second pass rusher,
22:13
and I'll tell you what a lot of this has
22:14
to do is how do you rush the how do you
22:17
rush the passer from the the interior of
22:19
your defense? Because if you can get
22:22
good press, now you can start doing some
22:24
tricks. You can get some twists and some
22:26
contains and be able to get around
22:28
people, back inside of people. And if
22:31
you have some defensive tackles or
22:32
inside guys that can move, you can start
22:35
twisting and stunning and slanting and
22:37
doing different things with your front
22:39
in order Yeah, that's why you have to be
22:41
so athletic up front in this age of
22:43
college football, because getting
22:45
pressure on the quarterback is the
22:47
absolute key. I know this much in this
22:49
TCU game that and I don't know I can't
22:52
remember what the kid's name is, the
22:53
transfer quarterback they're going to
22:55
have from Harvard, that's going to be
22:56
playing for TCU, but he's going to be a
22:58
processor. They talked talked you know,
23:00
how I did a little research on him. They
23:02
talked about how came on his visit and
23:04
they didn't know where he was and he was
23:05
in the he was studying film.
23:07
Uh and so he's he's going to be a and
23:10
very high intelligent processor. And so
23:12
the question is, well, how do you beat
23:15
guys like that? The way to beat guys
23:17
like that
23:19
is you create so much havoc so quickly,
23:22
you don't give them the opportunity to
23:24
process.
23:25
And that that comes from having your
23:27
hair on fire and getting after the
23:29
quarterback in the interior side of the
23:32
line to be able to collapse the pocket
23:34
and then guys rushing off the edge,
23:36
using your stunts, using your twists,
23:37
using your slants, using all the things
23:39
that you have to do up front to create
23:41
havoc and not allow his brain to process
23:45
things so he can pick you apart down the
23:47
field. So, yeah, I I think the
23:48
complimentary player player to Mel
23:50
Carter is going to be critical.
23:54
>> If Belichick
23:55
doesn't talk a a lot about goals in
23:57
terms of wins and losses, he talks about
23:59
stacking good days and
24:01
but
24:03
fans do count wins and losses and that's
24:07
going to be important as far as whether
24:09
they make a bowl game or whether they
24:11
don't.
24:12
What do you see as the floor and the
24:14
ceiling of this team in terms of win
24:16
total?
24:19
>> Yeah, I mean
24:21
Yeah, I mean I agree with coach
24:22
Belichick. You go back and watch that
24:24
clip from Nick Saban and he talked about
24:26
when he was at Michigan State and they
24:27
were struggling and he really honed in
24:29
to he honed in to like, "Hey guys, let's
24:32
stop scoreboard watching. Let's let's
24:34
let's let's embrace the process." And
24:37
then the rest will take care of itself.
24:39
And I think that philosophy obviously
24:41
has done well for for coaches who think
24:43
that way. Um but in terms of yeah,
24:47
ultimately at the end of the day you
24:49
either win the game or you lose a game
24:51
and all that's really what matters. And
24:54
this team this year
24:56
I really believe
24:58
one of the reasons why this TCU game is
25:01
so critical. I think it's I think it's
25:04
more than just be competitive in this
25:07
game.
25:08
I really think that I I I
25:11
full on believe they'll be very
25:13
competitive. They'll put a very
25:15
competitive product on the field, but I
25:17
think it's a little deeper than that. I
25:19
think for this thing to get going and
25:22
get some your fan base excited, you need
25:24
to win this football game. You got to
25:26
find a way to win this football game.
25:29
And then obviously, there's some tough
25:30
games in the schedule, the Clemsons and
25:32
the Miamis and the Notre Dames, you
25:34
know,
25:35
if you if this team could find a way to
25:38
get to seven wins,
25:41
to six wins to a bowl game, seven wins,
25:45
I think and then they're
25:47
what they can't have happen, they can't
25:49
have happened in a Miami, a Notre Dame,
25:53
a Clemson game, they can't have the
25:55
fiasco that happened last year at
25:58
Clemson.
26:00
If you can get in those games and you
26:02
can show your improvement, show your
26:04
development, show your toughness, show
26:07
your grit, and you can just compete hard
26:10
in those games, I think the Carol the
26:12
the Carolina fan is a knowledgeable fan.
26:16
And they will respect the fact that
26:18
these kids are getting better and this
26:20
program is headed in the right
26:22
direction. Then,
26:24
you got to be able to you got to be able
26:26
to go to Virginia, you got to beat them,
26:29
you got to beat your rivals, you got to
26:30
beat Duke, you got to be you got to find
26:33
a way to beat NC State, right? All these
26:35
games that really really are the are the
26:38
meat potatoes of who we are and the
26:41
games that are important to win as a
26:43
Carolina football fan is is critical.
26:46
So, yeah, do I think this is a this is
26:49
potentially
26:51
competitive against really good teams,
26:53
but a six to seven-win football team
26:55
headed in the right direction will will
26:57
really say a lot for the direction of
26:59
the program.
27:00
>> This is where we get into the Jones
27:01
Angel appreciation part of the podcast.
27:04
We've talked about Jones before as a fan
27:06
of the Tar Heels my entire life and a
27:07
fan of the medium of radio.
27:09
Uh I don't think anyone's ever been able
27:10
to say to Jones Angel, you know, I don't
27:12
think he was very prepared for that
27:13
broadcast. Uh it it must be
27:16
uh amazing to work with that guy and
27:19
just to know that that's one part of
27:21
what you're doing on Saturday you're not
27:23
going to have to worry about. That guy's
27:25
got it it allows you to do what you're
27:27
doing. Is that am I getting that right?
27:31
>> Yeah. Yeah, I mean there's there's no
27:35
doubt. You know, my dad my dad was
27:37
played University of Iowa and ended up
27:39
being a Hall of Fame coach in the in the
27:41
Canadian Football League and and he
27:43
raised me and growing up with him he
27:45
always told me find find people who are
27:48
better than you and hang around those
27:49
people. And when you be able to get in
27:52
the broadcast booth with Jones Angel and
27:55
to see his preparation, to see
27:58
the way that he calls a game is is is
28:02
it's it is so enjoyable to be around it.
28:05
It's so great to be a part of it and to
28:07
sit back and to watch his
28:09
professionalism,
28:11
to listen to him and not only that is to
28:14
get to know him off the field and be
28:16
around him. Just a just a great guy,
28:18
great family guy. Uh
28:21
loves the Tar Heels and everything about
28:23
the Tar Heels and I I I wake up this is
28:26
a dream job for me. I wake up and and
28:29
pinch myself and they say, "Man, I get
28:30
to travel with the Carolina football
28:33
team and call their games with Jones
28:36
Angel in the booth and then and then
28:37
Brian Renner on the side." Brian Renner
28:39
a legendary Tar Heel quarterback,
28:42
you know, being taking over for Lee Pace
28:44
on the sidelines. I mean, this is this
28:47
is a dream come true for me and I I I I
28:51
I
28:51
can't even put into I can't even put
28:53
into words how excited I am just to be a
28:57
part with those guys and bring this
28:59
broadcast, first broadcast live from
29:01
Ireland.
29:03
>> We appreciate you joining us here on the
29:05
Tar Heel Tribune podcast. Is there
29:06
anything you want to plug on the way
29:08
out, any of your socials or anything
29:09
like that?
29:12
>> Oh yeah, sure. Like you can always go to
29:15
my my X handle which is Yauch Talk, so
29:18
it's j a u c h talk, Yauch Talk. And
29:23
hopefully I got got my Facebook page
29:26
obviously and then but yeah, no, I'm not
29:29
a huge social media guy. I just like to
29:32
I just like to get in the booth and just
29:35
get fired up, call the ball games and
29:38
and watch the Tar Heels play football.
29:40
>> That's the way we like it. I appreciate
